SERMON NOTES 16 DEC 2018 Scripture: John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:7-11 Title: What s Love Got To Do With It? Preacher: Pastor Stanley Soh John 13:34-35 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. 1 John 4:7-11 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Perhaps Love Let it show! Let it show! Let it show! Christmas! The Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Is it? Reflection Do stay back to pause, reflect and pray about what God has spoken to you during the service. Please be mindful of others who may be praying. Do share with others over lunch fellowship to encourage them. Sermons are available on our church s website at livingpraise.org.sg 3

LIVING PRAISE NEW MEMBER S RECEPTION 16 DEC 2018 Adult BapJsm A. PRESENTATION The minister addresses all present: When our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he commanded that all who put their faith in Him be bapjsed. Hear the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in MaNhew 28:18-20: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all na;ons, bap;sing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. BapJsm is an outward sign of God s grace in two ways: First, it signifies a ChrisJan s entry into God s family. That is why a ChrisJan is bapjsed into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We now belong to Christ who is our head and we are his body. Second, bapjsm symbolises a ChrisJan s union with Christ in his death and resurrecjon. This is symbolised in the water of bapjsm which displays how by faith we have been united to Christ s dying and rising again to new life, and so we have died to sin and are raised to new life. Minister says: I present Audrey Tan Hui Ting, Samuel Tan Zhiwei and Valerie Tan Xin Yi to be bapjsed. B. PROFESSION OF FAITH Minister says: Through believing in Jesus we are saved, God gives us new life, guards us from Satan, and nurtures us in Christ s love. We now choose who we will serve, by turning from Satan and sin, and turning to Jesus Christ. The minister then asks the following quesjons of the candidates for bapjsm. As God has saved you, I ask you, to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of God s church, the faith in which we bapjse. C. QUESTIONS FOR OUR NEW MEMBERS : Audrey Tan Hui Ting, Samuel Tan Zhiwei and Valerie Tan Xin Yi, I now put these quesjons to you: 1. TrusJng in the gracious mercy of God, will you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I will. 2. Who is your Lord and Saviour? Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour. 3. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love? 4

LIVING PRAISE NEW MEMBER S RECEPTION 16 DEC 2018 4. Will you be unashamed of Christ and His church? Will you make every effort to keep the unity of peace that Christ has given us? Will you put to death every form of sinful behaviour sexual, anger and speech sins which bring dishonour to God s name, discredits the gospel and destroys his church? Will you, instead, offer your body as a living sacrifice to God, as a holy temple to God? 5. Will you be a faithful member of this congregajon in LPPC, share in its worship and ministry through your prayers and spiritual gi_s, through your humble service in loving submission to your leaders and partnership with your brothers & sisters and so fulfill your calling to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? D. QUESTIONS FOR THE CONGREGATION The minister addresses the congregajon: Will you, as members of the church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture Audrey Tan Hui Ting, Samuel Tan Zhiwei and Valerie Tan Xin Yi, by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging them to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of his church? The people respond: We will PRAYER: Eternal and gracious God, we give you thanks. We praise you for sending Jesus your Son. May all who believe and are bapjsed be delivered from death to life, from bondage to freedom, from sin to righteousness. Bind them to the household of faith, guard them from all evil. Strengthen them by your Spirit to serve you unjl the day you make all things new. To you be all praise, honor and glory through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns forever. Amen. The candidates who are to be bapjsed by pouring or sprinkling may kneel. Calling each candidate by her/his ChrisJan (given) name or names only, the minister shall pour or sprinkle water visibly on the candidate s head, while saying: I bap\se you Audrey Tan Hui Ting, Samuel Tan Zhiwei and Valerie Tan Xin Yi in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Minister: God has made them members of the household of God, to share with us in the Priesthood of Christ. Let us welcome the newly bapjsed. 5

LIVING PRAISE NEW MEMBER S RECEPTION 16 DEC 2018 Child BapJsm Explana>on: There are three aspects of child bapjsm First, the focus is on God - his goodness in giving Dorothy Lee Hui En to Daniel Lee & Jia Lin, Jacob Sia Cheng Feng & Christopher Sia Cheng Yao to Jimmy Sia & Chris;ne, Elisha Shalom Nugroho to Adrian & Clarissa. Second, it s on the parents and their responsibility. Because Jesus is their Lord and Saviour, they are acknowledging both their dependence on him, and their responsibility in bringing their child up in the knowledge and fear of our God. Third, because we all are part of the body of Christ, as members of God s church at LPPC, we all have a responsibility to come alongside these parents to help them in their nurturing and bringing up of their children in the knowledge and fear of our God. Promises: (The parents bring their child forward and the minister says: ) Daniel Lee & Jia Lin, Jimmy Sia & Chris;ne, Adrian & Clarissa, you have brought your child, Dorothy Lee Hui En, Jacob Sia Cheng Feng & Christopher Sia Cheng Yao, Elisha Shalom Nugroho willing that he share with you in the grace of the Lord, and be part of His Church as child of God. Now, in accordance with the authority I have received, I put to you these quesjons by which you make your promises. Do answer with heart and voice agreeing: 1. Do you acknowledge that your child is a gi_ of God, and that therefore you have a responsibility to pray for, teach God s Word and show Godliness so that she may become child of God? Yes we do. 2. Will you in accordance with the measure of growth in your child s understanding, teach her the truths of our faith and lead her into habits of prayer, Bible reading and obedience? Yes we will. 3. Will you, when your child has reached a sufficient age of understanding, help her to prepare herself to receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and so to become members of the Church sharing in its ministries? Yes we will. QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION Brothers and sisters in Christ, do you promise to help Daniel & Jia Lin, Jimmy & Chris;ne, Adrian & Clarissa in their nurture and bringing up of their children - Dorothy Lee, Jacob and Christopher Sia and Elisha Nugroho in the knowledge and fear of our God? Act of bap>sm: (The minister bapjses the child, as follows:) Dorothy Lee Hui En, Jacob Sia Cheng Feng, Christopher Sia Cheng Yao, Elisha Shalom Nugroho, I bapjse you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Amen. Recep>on: This child, having been bapjsed, is recognised as members of the Church of Christ. God has entrusted him/ her to our loving care and concern. 6
