The pianist leads us in singing praise. As the processional cross passes, you, turn and continue to focus your eyes and heart on the cross. We do this to remind ourselves Jesus' death for us draws us here to be served by Him and serve Him as members of His family, the church.) HYMN "Lift up Your Heads, You Mighty Gates LW 24: 1, 2, 5 Lift up your heads, you mighty gates! Behold, the King of Glory waits; The King of kings is drawing near, The Savior of the world is here. He brings salvation down to earth. Greet Him with shouts of holy mirth. Our highest praise we bring, Our God, Creator, King. The righteous King is bringing peace; He comes the prisoners to release. His royal crown, self sacrifice, Its jewel, mercy without price. He brings our sorrows to an end. Shout out your joy to God, our friend. Our highest praise we bring, Our God, Redeemer, King. Christ Jesus, Lord and Savior, come, I open wide my heart, your home. Oh, enter with your radiant grace, On my life s pattern shine your face, And let your Holy Spirit guide 2

To gracious vistas rich and wide. Our God, we praise your name, Forevermore the same. WE UNITE AS GOD S FAMILY AND IN HIS NAME The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their baptisms connecting them to Christ s forgiving sacrifice. PRAYER OF THE DAY O Holy Spirit, work in our hearts to prepare us for welcoming Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son, in our 3

celebration of His first coming at Christmas, and in our daily lives as we await His second coming as Lord and King on the Last Day. May the coming of that Day not frighten us, as we wait our reunion with You in confident faith; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. KYRIE Gloria in Excelsis SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may 4

steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. "GOD GIVES US THE GIFT OF HIS WORD" OLD TESTAMENT Malachi 3:1-7b Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts. For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. READER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Philippians 1:2-11 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right 5

for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. READER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God (Please rise.) ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 3:1-14 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of 6

Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. And the crowds asked him, What then shall we do? And he answered them, Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise. Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? And he said to them, Collect no more than you are authorized to do. Soldiers also asked him, And we, what shall we do? And he said to them, Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages. READER: This is the Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE: Praise to you O Christ CHILDREN'S MESSAGE HYMN "On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's Cry" LW 14:1, 2,3, 5 On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry Announces that the Lord is nigh; Awake and hearken, for he brings Glad tidings of the King of kings! And let us all our hearts prepare For Christ to come and enter there. Public domain SERMON THE APOSTLES CREED (With All Christians We Proclaim Our Convictions) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8

Hear us, gracious Father, for the sake of Your holy Son, Jesus, our greatest gift. Be with the leaders of our nation, granting them discernment, zeal, and integrity; be also with us as citizens of this nation, that through our words and deeds, others may be led to see Your love and glory. Hear us, gracious Father, for the sake of Your holy Son, Jesus, our greatest gift. For our church body, that You may guide her daily through Your Holy Scriptures, assuring believers of Your forgiveness, strengthening lives for service, and empowering a joyful witness to the only God, who 10

graciously offers salvation through faith in Jesus. Hear us, gracious Father, for the sake of Your holy Son, Jesus, our greatest gift. O Holy Spirit, we praise you for Andrew Sermeno and Chuck Bethel celebrating this week, rebirth and adoption into your family, the church, by your Holy Baptism. O Spirit of power, make them bold to live for you by serving others, bold to learn, and speak Your Word, bold to be known for obedience to you. In the name of Jesus, we pray, confident that You will answer our prayers. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Advent is a time of waiting, a time of repentance and a time of joy. As we wait for the celebration of Christ's coming to be revealed, repentance and joy are ongoing. Through the gift of confession, we are led by God's Word to reflect on our condition in relation to God's law and to repent of our failures. Through the gift of absolution, we are filled with joy over the declaration of our forgiveness. At this point, consider your place in life according to the Ten Commandments: Are you a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker? Have you been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hottempered, rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your words or deeds? Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything, or done any harm? If so, then may God's Spirit lead you in heart-felt sincerity to continue: Dear confessor, I ask you please to hear my confession and to pronounce forgiveness in order to fulfill God's will. I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins. In particular I confess before you that according to my situation in life, I, sad to say, have served You, O Lord, and others unfaithfully, for in so many areas I have not done what I 11

was told to do. I have made others angry and caused them to curse or be frustrated with me. I have been negligent and allowed damage to be done. I have also been offensive in words and deeds. I have quarreled with my peers. I have grumbled about others and cursed them. I am sorry for all of this and I ask for Your mercy and grace. I want to do better. God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. Amen. Do you believe that my forgiveness is God's forgiveness? Yes, dear confessor. Let it be done for you as you believe. And I, by the command (John 20:20) of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GOD GIVES US THE GIFT OF HIS SACRAMENT Please see the back of the bulletin for our communion practice. PREFACE The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and proper to do so. It is right for us to thank and praise You, heavenly Father. Out of Your great love for us You sent Your only-begotten Son into this world of sin to rescue and 12

redeem Your fallen creation. In Him You have given us forgiveness and life, and for His sake You are worthy of all honor and glory. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all who have gone before us in the faith and all who are yet to come, we honor and glorify You with the words: SANCTUS THE LORD'S PRAYER: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. CHRIST S WORDS OF CONSECRATION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way 13

also he took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you! People Amen!
