And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY Book of Common Prayer, p. 159 Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. Celebrant: Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Children 3 years old through sixth-graders are invited to follow the cross into Sunday school.)

THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST READING Malachi 3:1-4 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CANTICLE 16 Song of Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79) Benedictus Dominus Deus (Book of Common Prayer, pp. 92-93) S-37 (Stephen Elvey)

THE NEW TESTAMENT Philippians 1:3-11 I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SEQUENCE HYMN, #75 There s a voice in the wilderness crying Ascension THE GOSPEL Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Luke:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON The Very Rev. Rob Baldwin NICENE CREED Book of Common Prayer, p. 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of

life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Book of Common Prayer, p. 392 The Intercessor and People pray responsively. Intercessor: In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. (Silence) Intercessor: For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone. Intercessor: For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace. Intercessor: For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. Intercessor: For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. Intercessor: For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. Intercessor: For Michael our Presiding Bishop, the Council of Trustees, and for all bishops and other ministers; For all who serve God in his Church. Intercessor: For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. (Silence) The People may add their own petitions. Intercessor: Hear us, Lord; For your mercy is great. Intercessor: We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life. (Silence) The People may add their own thanksgivings. Intercessor: We will exalt you, O God our King; And praise your Name for ever and ever. Intercessor: We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. (Silence) The People may add their own petitions. Intercessor: Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them; Who put their trust in you. Intercessor: We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. (Silence may be kept.)

Intercessor and Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The celebrant proclaims the absolution.) THE PEACE Book of Common Prayer, p. 360 All stand. Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Then the Celebrant and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS BIRTHDAY PRAYER Book of Common Prayer, p. 830 Celebrant: O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servant(s) N, as he/she/ they begin(s) another year. Grant that he/she/they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen his/her/ their trust in your goodness all the days of his/her/their life(lives); through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ANNIVERSARY PRAYER Book of Occasional Services, p. 164 Celebrant: Grant O God, in your compassion, that these two people, having taken each other in marriage, and affirming again the covenant which they have made, may grow in forgiveness, loyalty, and love; and come at last to the eternal joys which you have promised through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION OFFERTORY MUSIC Let All Mortal Flesh Gustav Holst Trinity Choir (1874-1934) OFFERTORY HYMN, #380 (vs. 3) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow Old 100th Representatives of the congregation bring the people s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the altar. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B Book of Common Prayer, p. 367 Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

PROPER PREFACE Book of Common Prayer, p. 378 Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. The Celebrant continues: Book of Common Prayer, p. 362 Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS, S-128 Holy, holy, holy Lord William Mathias Celebrant and Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand or kneel as the Celebrant gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ through his passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine. The Celebrant continues: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the rememberance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Convenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his comman, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD S PRAYER Book of Common Prayer, p. 364 Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Book of Common Prayer, p. 364 After the Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread, silence is kept. FRACTION ANTHEM, S-172 Blessed are those who are called Mason Martens Celebrant: Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb. Praise the Lord, all you nations; laud him, all you peoples. For his loving kindness toward us is great, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever. Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb. The Celebrant and deacons receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then offer them to the people. Baptized Christians of all ages and denominations are invited to the Lord s Table. Kneel or stand at the rail, as you are able, receiving the bread in the palm of your hand. Receive the wine by drinking from the cup or by touching the bread lightly to the wine. Those not receiving the Sacrament are invited to cross their arms upon their chests as a sign to the priest to give a blessing.
