THE EPISTLE of PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE GALATIANS CHAPTER 1:1-10 Part 1 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-433 JANUARY 27, 2002 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: There s No Other Gospel THE THEME OF THE BOOK: IS IN FACT A QUESTION: HOW CAN WE (WHO ARE SINFUL BY NATURE), COME TO GOD (WHO IS HOLY BY NATURE) WHEN MY SINS HAVE SEPARATED ME FROM GOD AND EVEN DOMINATE MY LIFE? SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Apostolic Authority, Grace, Peace, Warnings, Gospel INTRODUCTION to the text Galatians 1:1-10 The Summation Sentence The Bible is unmistakably clear; man can either be acceptable before God by one of two ways. #1 by having been born absolutely perfect. #2 - Never having sinned. 1

#3 thinking only perfect, divine thoughts, #4 Having no sin nature and #5 Never exceeded the posted speed limit! For the Rest of us THERE IS THE BOOK OF GALATIANS! Who were the Galatians? They were both those of a geographical area as well as a political region. A people made up of those who dwelt in the regions from the black sea to the north down to the Mediterranean coast in the south modern day Turkey! WE WILL CONSTANTLY BE REMINDED OF THE THEME OF THEBOOK: HOW CAN WE (WHO ARE SINFUL BY NATURE), COME TO GOD (WHO IS HOLY BY NATURE) WHEN OUR SINS HAVE SEPARATED US FROM GOD AND EVEN NOW DOMINATE OUR LIVES? The Apostle Paul had a Burning Passion To convey which became the Hallmark of his Ministry We are justified by Faith in Christ s Work upon the Cross and We are Sanctified by the Work of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives. 2

The Mechanics: The Book is Broken Up Into Three Main Points of Thought I.) II.) Justification by Faith Defended In chapter 1 and 2 Justification by Faith Explained In chapter 3 and 4 III.) Justification by Faith Applied In chapter 5 and 6 Notable Teachings & Events in the Book; Paul s personal call to preach Christ His warnings against false doctrine His correction of Peter The proper use and reason of the Mosaic Law The difference between the fruit of the Spirit and the works of the flesh The Purpose of Paul s Writing Was to combat the complication of the Gospel that was creeping into the church. There were those who after naming Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then slipped into aberrant Christian theology (at best) There were three main areas that concerned Paul. #1 The Error of Legalism That a person is saved by doing good or being good. It s a salvation based upon how well of a performer you are for Jesus (in reality it s a self-based, self-reliant cult) 3

#2 The Error of False Liberty To live however you wish, do whatever you want, and believe that your actions have no day of reckoning - carnal #3 The Error of Galatianism That a person is saved by Jesus Christ but one having been saved, the person is now kept saved by their own human performance and adherence to rules or the law. All Three of these are Enemies of the Gospel of Grace and are an Offense to the Cross of Christ diminishing from His atoning work at Calvary First Main Point of Thought I.) Justification by Faith Defended In chapters 1 and 2 THERE S NO OTHER GOSPEL 1.) Because The Gospel is from God vv. 1-2 Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead), 2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: a.) It s not of man v.1 Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead) He Defends His Calling by Arguing it s Divine Origin 4

Paul, Once Saul - The Man Philippians 3:4-6 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 1. It s not somebody s idea - thing 2. It s not a human dynasty - thing 3. It s not an institutional, church thing Paul was a Trophy of Jesus Christ I ll Tell you Why. A Drunk is very aware of their situation. A Hooker knows she s worth Nothing in the eyes that behold her. How Tragic is This: Jay Baxter A Senior Executive of Enron Knew That He was in Trouble, And while his attorney was arguing his defense Jay Baxter Drives Away in $100,000 BMW And Blew His Priceless Brains Away with a Nickle Bullet Jay Baxter! You were worth more than money, your position, your house Paul was a Hard Nut to Crack Why? Because There is a no more difficult person to lead to Jesus Christ than a moral man. A religious man. A man who looks good and smells good. 5

It s hard to win a good man to Christ But Jesus Got to Paul Before it Was Too Late Acts 9:1-6 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? 5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. 6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." One who has been sent at the command of another (submission to the mission) Verse 1 but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead) That is the Qualifier It s Real Because Jesus Has Been Raised from the Dead Why then would I listen to Joseph Smith When He s Dead? Why would I listen to Muhammad He s Dead Or Charles T. Russell who founded the Jehovah s Witness - He s Dead 6

The Founder of My Faith is Alive!!! Revelation 2:8 "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna (turkey) write, 'These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: Revelation 1:17-18 And so Christ said "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore and I have the keys of Hell and of Death. Jesus I ve Got the Keys - I m Doing the Driving This is Who Converted Paul That self-righteous, arrogant, manmade man who looked at the law of God, then compared himself to others around him and said Who Needs This Christianity Stuff? Who Converted You Friend Has it the Traditions of the Church, or Some Man s Exciting Experience? A Holiness club, a certain group a way of thinking? THERE S NO OTHER GOSPEL Because The Gospel is from God b.) It Knows no Borders v.2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the church(es) of Galatia: 7

Galatia far from Jerusalem a region, a people of Pagan Worship Throughout the Northern and Southern Area of Turkey Today Paul was Ordained by God to be Used of God Acts 9:15 for Paul is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, before kings, and to the children of Israel. The Gospel Cannot, Will Not Be Stopped It s Impossible There s No Other Gospel And It Knows no Borders Matthew 28:18-20 And when Jesus came and spoke to them, he said, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore (because He has all authority) and make disciples of all the nations, (because that s what He does) baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and Look, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. 1. When we were a church of 300 adults we went to Russia 2. When we were a church of 500 adults we went to Germany 3. When we were a church of 1000 adults we went to England 4. When we were a church of 1500 adults we went to Mexico 5. When we were a church of 2500 adults we went to China And Now with Who Knows How Many Attending Here It s Germany, Mexico, China, Brazil and 8

Afghanistan - Please, Not Like Japan It s time for a Calvary Chapel in Kabul or my favorite - Calvary Chapel of Jalalabad Matthew 24:14 "And this gospel (not some other) will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations Who was all the brethren who are with me Just Men Who Had Changed Their Minds About Jesus Christ Ya See- Without Christ - People are bound in Sin And most people have grown accustomed to it. They re comfortable about it. Many have settled for a Guilt life almost without knowing it That s Why Today is Such an Important Day for the Gospel We re Building a Launch Site to the World The World is in Trouble Today and it doesn t even know Like Sophie s Rabbit Fur Face And she didn t even know it like sin! 9

Must Read Scripture Acts 15:1-11 And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." 2 Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question. 3 So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren. 4 And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them. 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses." 6 Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. 7 And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 "So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, 9 "and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 "Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they." To Impose Upon Beliefs By Coercion THERE S NO OTHER GOSPEL 2.) That has been proven effective vv. 3-5 3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. a.) We have been accepted v.3 Grace to you 10

It is a declaration of a fact, not a wish! It Has Been Done Grace grk 5485 charis (khar'-ece); a divine influence or act upon the human heart. To declare acceptable, favored, gifted, liberated The Antonym of Grace; Is the Middle eastern word - Taliban The Word Grace Appears 153 times in the New Testament (153 different species of fish caught in the net by the men at Jesus command) THERE S NO OTHER GOSPEL That has been proven effective b.) We re no longer struggling v.3 and peace Peace grk 1515 eirene (i-ray'-nay); a quietness of soul, a Sabbath, a rest. To have made up or settled the dispute It is the Grace and it is the Peace that comes from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ Grace grk. charis and Peace heb. shalom c.) We have been gifted v.4-5 who gave (gifted) Himself for our sins (the worlds sin), that He might deliver (to take us up out of) us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 11

You re Saved from the Surrounding Corruption Now And you will be saved from evil that seeks you out From this present evil age An evil that is trying to get you to sin What s with the 10 Freeway and it s Bill (Sin)-Boards? 1 Peter 5:8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, When a Christian Forgets to See That They re Saved by Faith in Christ Alone - will slip and fall into either The Error of False Liberty To live however you wish, do whatever you want, and believe that your actions have no day of reckoning - carnal The Error of Galatianism That a person is saved by Jesus Christ but once having been saved, the person is now kept saved by their own human performance and adherence to rules or the law. Verse 4 according to the will of our God and Father This is God s Will assurance! He has called us to be free from this world and has provided for us the power Verse 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 12

A present evil age = a moment Vs. Forever and ever, ages upon ages, eons upon eons Focus on Heaven being the Reality The Reality is Now Galatians 2:20-21 "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain." This is the Christian life - We re dead and alive at the same time Hebrews 10:10-12 By that His will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. When Did This Happen? 2000 years ago at the cross - God the Father Killed Us and Our Sins Through Jesus Christ once and for All Hebrews 10:11-12 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13
