DVC Mathematics HBA ALeKS Stands for Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces.! It is a web-based, assessment and learning system that uses artificial intelligence. This artificial intelligence uses adaptive questioning to determine what you know and don t know in this course.! ALEKS then instructs you on the topics you are most ready to learn.! ALEKS is like having a personal tutor, so the topics your working on in class won t necessary match what you re doing in ALeKS.! ALEKS is a third-party vendor, so DVC doesn t make any money from it s use. We cannot purchase ALEKS directly, so it must be purchased through a book publisher, McGraw-Hill.! ALeKS will periodically reassess you to see if you remember and retain what you learned.! Just like any good tutor, ALeKS will have you revisit any topics that you forget.! These assessments are your chance to place out of labs, so do your best!! ALeKS has very few multiple-choice questions, so be prepared to work out problems on paper. It s a good idea to save your notes in case you have to revisit a topic. 2 3! You will need to purchase an ALeKS access code. You can purchase it in the Book Center for about $53, or online from ALeKS for the special DVC price of $40 a discount from the usual price of $60.! Your instructor can give you a free 2-week financial aid code so you can get started right away.! If you have an EOPS Book Voucher, you need use it to purchase ALeKS from the Book Center.! Let s walk through the registration process. 4 ENTER your 10 digit course code. This should be on your syllabus.!!set UP A NEW ACCOUNT!! You must set up a new ALEKS account every semester. 5 6 1
PLEASE Verify your course information (an example is below). If its correct, click continue. Next, you will be prompted for an access code. If you want to purchase a code online, click here. If you already purchased a code, or have a financial aid code, enter it here. You can copy and paste it from your email. 7 8! If you re using a financial aid code, you ll set up an ALEKS account. You will need to purchase ALEKS before the two weeks expire! If you re purchasing ALEKS right now, go to slide 18 for a walk-through of the process. There are 2 steps: 1. You purchase ALEKS access through McGraw-Hill, which will require you entering your information for the purchase, then 2. You will set up your ALEKS account. ² Go to slide 18 to walk through the process.! Now enter your information for your ALEKS account.! Make sure you enter in a current email address so you get important announcements.! Choose a password you ll remember! 9 10! Your Login Name will always be (first initial)(last name)(some #).! ALEKS will run a browser check to make sure you have the necessary software.! If you have problems with this, contact ALEKS (see the last slide for information).! Use Report to Check your time Use Options to change your password and purchase ALEKS if you used the financial aid code Return to your pie Click the word for a definition There are many languages to choose from Be sure to log out when you re done! Enter an email address you can access; you will need to retrieve an email from ALEKS for the final step. Answer the questions & complete your purchase. ! Now you re ready to set up an ALEKS account.! Go back to the ALEKS website and click SIGN UP NOW again.! Redo all the beginning steps, except this time, paste in your newly purchased access code.! You may need to delete the last number to get the code to propagate properly. 25 5
