Pay very close attention to the CCC needs and step up to fulfill the requests. The PFN/Candidate Dinner is 19 October and VA annual training for volunteers is 23 and 24 October. The Exemplification of the Fourth Degree will be held on 28 October. More details on all these events will be sent separate. As you can imagine it is time for all Fourth Degree members to demonstrate their Patriotic Pride and participate in as many of these events as you possibly can! SK Walter H. (Tom) Carroll Faithful Navigator An Ethics of Fraternity by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson The continued success of our Order as both a business and a fraternal society is grounded in our Catholic mission SK Nathaniel D. Wharton, Jr. Faithful Trustees SK William J. Garber, Jr. One Year Trustee SK Larry L. Espiritu Two Year Trustee SK Stephen B. Benson Three Year Trustee LAST MONTH, I addressed more than 800 of our dedicated Knights of Columbus insurance agents about our mission to protect the financial future of our brother Knights families. Now, I would like to share with you excerpts of those remarks. Pope Francis has challenged Catholics to take up what he calls an ethics of www.kofcassembly2184.org 1

fraternity to help transform society. This is also the vision of Father Michael McGivney and this is what we have been about for more than 135 years. We should remember that in Father McGivney s day there were already insurance companies in Connecticut. He could have easily referred his parishioners to one of these companies. But he didn t. Instead, Father McGivney wanted something different. He wanted something distinctly Catholic. He wanted a new Catholic fraternity that would transform the practical men of his day into a committed brotherhood of men capable of helping each other. That is what he founded, and that is what we continue today. At the Knights of Columbus, we have developed a strong, successful business model based upon an ethics of fraternity. It is what we mean when we say insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. You and I are engaged in a noble experiment. It is an experiment to demonstrate that a business enterprise fully committed to Catholic teaching and principles can enter into the free market and successfully compete among industry leaders. We are a business enterprise today counted among the Fortune 1000 that seeks in a public way to operate according to Catholic values. We do this in the way we invest, in the products we offer, in the dividend philosophy we support and in the charity our earnings make possible. We believe a values-based, ethical strategy in both marketing and investments is the best way to achieve sustainability and to remain competitive in a free-market economy. This is the brand represented by a Knights of Columbus agent a brand committed to the ethics of a Catholic fraternity when he sits across the kitchen table from a brother Knight and helps him decide how best to safeguard the future of his family. In fact, it is better to say that he doesn t just represent the brand of the Knights of Columbus he is the brand. There is no substitute for a K of C agent s professionalism, commitment, concern, and yes, his conscience. I am so very proud that in the history of the Knights of Columbus we have had thousands of such committed agents. The day I was elected supreme knight, I told our Board of Directors that we have a moral obligation to offer membership in the Knights of Columbus to every eligible Catholic man. We have a similar obligation to offer the protection of our great Knights of Columbus insurance program to every eligible Catholic man and his family. Our new online membership initiative makes this goal a practical possibility. I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity. I also ask you to encourage these new members to become active brother Knights, to join a local council and help us in our mission of fraternity and charity. I hope in the coming months we will see thousands of new members join through this online initiative. In many ways, we have just completed the best fraternal year in the history of the Knights of Columbus membership is up, the dollars we have given to charity are up and the amount of hours we have volunteered is up. On the business side, we have reached new heights of insurance in force and assets under management. We were again honored as one of the World s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. And Standard & Poor s ranked us as one of the six most financially strong insurance companies in North America. Each day that I walk into my office as supreme knight, I am confident that for the Knights of Columbus the best is yet to come. Together we will make that a reality. The Exaltation of The Holy Cross September 14th is the feast day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, also known as the Triumph of the Cross or the Elevation of the Cross. This is the day the Church celebrates both the discovery and the recovery of the True Cross of Jesus Christ. ST. HELENA S DISCOVERY IN JERUSALEM The Roman Emperor Constantine s mother, St. Helena, a convert to Christianity, went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to locate where the important events in the life of Jesus Christ occurred, and to preserve the relics of the Christian faith that remained there. One of her goals was to find the place of Jesus crucifixion and the very Cross on which he was hung. Through interviewing many locals, and with the assistance of the Bishop of Jerusalem, St. Macarius, she discovered the spot and found the True Cross which had been previously hidden by the Jews. According to the historian Rufinus, the identity of the True Cross was confirmed by a miraculous healing after St. Macarius recited this prayer: O Lord, who by the Passion of Thine only Son on the cross, didst deign to restore salvation to mankind, and who even now hast inspired thy handmaid Helena to seek for the blessed wood to which the author of our salvation was nailed, show clearly which it was, among the three crosses, that was raised for Thy glory. Distinguish it from those which only served for a common execution. Let this woman who is now expiring return from death s door as soon as she is touched by the wood of salvation. The date of this discovery and miracle, according to tradition, was May 3rd, 326 A.D. St. Helena had a church built on the original site of Jesus crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Her son Constantine dedicated this church on September 13-14 in the year 335 A.D. Even today, the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem, or the Via Dolorosa, end at this very spot. THE FEAST DAY The True Cross was considered a most valuable treasure of the Church and became a highly venerated object, and the feast honoring the Elevation of the Holy Cross has continually been celebrated until this day. It is celebrated on May 3rd on the old Roman calendar (the date of its discovery), and on September 14th in Jerusalem and on the new Roman calendar (the date the church was dedicated). THE TRUE CROSS IS STOLEN The Cross of Christ was kept by the Church in Jerusalem, but was absconded by Chosroas, King of the Persians, in the year 614 A.D. after the Persian invasion of Syria and Palestine. In the year 629 A.D. the Cross was recovered and brought back to Jerusalem by Emperor Heraclius of Constantinople. The relic of the True Cross was then restored to its place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The date the True Cross was brought back to Jerusalem was September 14th! The anniversary of the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the date on which Jerusalem celebrated the feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross. Tradition has it that Emperor Heraclius carried the Cross on his back, a public act of homage, in order to restore it to its rightful place; but, he was only able to move it after he had removed his royal garments and put on the humble garments of repentance instead. TIMELINE OF EVENTS 326 A.D.: St. Helena discovers the True Cross in Jerusalem on May 3rd. 335 A.D.: Constantine dedicates the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on September 14th. 614 A.D.: Jerusalem is invaded by the Persians who steal the True Cross. 629 A.D.: The True Cross is recovered and brought back to Jerusalem on September 14th. VENERATING THE CROSS The Church has a long tradition of venerating the Cross, that s why Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches always have large crucifixes in prominent places. In the Catholic Church venerating the Cross is a liturgical tradition during Holy Week. It s also why Catholic Christians and Eastern Christians keep crosses and crucifixes in their homes, usually on their wall or above their doorway. In fact, a cross or a crucifix put in a place of honor is a sure mark of a Christian home. If you don t have a cross or a crucifix in your home, consider choosing one on this special feast day, have it blessed, and place it in a prominent place in your home where it will be honored and venerated. www.kofcassembly2184.org 4

COLOR CORPS Sir Knights, we are rapidly approaching three events which The Assembly needs members s commitment. Please respond with your attendance ASAP! There will be a scheduled Color Corps practice session for Saturday, at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church from 9:00AM to 11:00 AM. Areas of concern for practice are presenting and posting the Colors for the State meeting on Saturday, 6 October. This will be open to all members, whether or not you intend to participate at the State meeting. Please let your Color Corps Commander, Sir Knight Terry Fairman, know if you plan to attend. As mentioned, Fr. Washington Assembly will present the Colors at the State meeting on Saturday, 6 October at Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg at 8:30 AM. Please arrive by 7:00 AM to run through our presentation. A reconfirmation will be asked of all participants. Finally, an invitation has been granted to participate in the West Point Crab Carnival Parade at 1:00 PM on Saturday, 6 October. As the West Point Council is now a part of the Tappahannock Assembly it is expected that Tappahannock shall take over the lead for this event. Nevertheless, our brothers will be in great need of support in this recent transition. The parade committee is really hoping we can support their event! The Grand Marshal, Mark Dorsey has been with the West Point School System for 30 years and most recently the Principal. The Color Corps Commander will have a full biography in the near future. Your participation is greatly needed! Please inform your Color Corps Commander ASAP if you are available for the Crab Carnival Parade as well as any of the previously mentioned events! Farewell to The Master Four years have flown bye. Seems I was just being introduced as the new Master and already it s time to say thank you and good bye. Thank you to each Navigator, Comptroller, Commander, Sir Knight and families that have contributed to making the Virginia District the absolute best in the Calvert Province. Our accomplishments often obscure the hard work that so many have put forth over the past four years. Your dedication to our principle of Patriotism is so evident in the many programs that each Assembly organizes. Parades, honor guards, numerous and various veterans programs, wake services and chalice ceremonies, and the Color Corps showing the Flag at Council and numerous civic events. Each of you make our District vibrant. We are alive and strong because of your activities though out the year. No part of our great Commonwealth lacks for the spirit of Patriotism because of you Sir Knights. Each of us represents the Patriotic Principle of our Order. I have had the distinct privilege and honor to be Master of the Virginia District. But the real honor has been the opportunity to meet and get to know so many Patriots in our Assemblies. Thank you Jeri and I want to thank each of you for the graciousness you showed by inviting us and accepting us to so many of your Assembly events. Council Affiliations Fr.
