FCS N August 13, 2017 R CHRCH HSRY by Christina Eddy, First MC Business Administrator 142 Years of rogress! 1875-present n ctober 26, 1875, the First MC of Santa Monica was established. wo small frame structures occupied the present site of the Santa Monica ublic Library at Fifth and Santa Monica Blvd. A hardware store occupied one structure whereby the church met upstairs with Reverend Mr. J.D. Crum as the first minister. n 1896, members built and contributed to the second church at 4th and Arizona, most notably the Rindge family. At the time, the church grew to over 200 members and was considered the most beautiful Methodist church in the state. n 1953, the church we now occupy on Washington at 11th, was completed and consecrated on November 22, built with hopes that one thousand members could occupy the sanctuary on any given day. t was built to enable the worshiper to be stirred by a sense of spiritual uplift with eyes drawn to the splendor of the reredos. t has kept pace with the spiritual growth of the city and plans to continue each day enriching the lives of residents and members. Sixty-four glorious years after our church was built, we have maintained its beauty now with the most recent Sanctuary steeple paint and repairs. We give thanks for the rustee leadership under Vern Busse for prioritizing the maintenance and upkeep, thanks to Anson Nordby for managing the project, and we give thanks to all contributors who make this possible including the Methodist Foundation, Bequests managed by rustees, perating budget, and individuals.
