Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2018 ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE Tuesday, December 11th 7pm Advent has a two-fold character; as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ s first coming to us is remembered, and as a season when that remembrance directs our minds and hearts to await Christ s second coming at the end of time. Advent is a period of devout and joyful expectation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation gives us a chance to take time out to think and to experience Christ s presence in this sacrament. Pope Francis said, Confession is the sacrament of the tenderness of God, his way of embracing us. Come and feel His embrace at our Advent Penance Service. Fr. Rick and guest priests will be available for individual confession following a brief service. We invite and encourage all parishioners to join us in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Christmas. Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Wednesday, December 12th 6:00pm Procession 7:00pm Spanish Mass Reception following Mass When Mary appeared to Juan Diego as Our Lady of Guadalupe, she had encouraging words for him. "Am I not here, I who am your mother?" In the image on Juan Diego's tilma (tunic), Mary identifies herself with the Aztec people. She has their hair and features, their symbolic maternity dress. She incorporated their important symbols of the sun, moon, and stars. The Mass for this feast includes two Gospel options. Both are familiar passages from the Gospel of Luke - the Annunciation and the Visitation. Both are equally relevant to this feast because Mary's yes to Christ isn't only to care for him but to come to us. Our Lady of Guadalupe is pregnant. The image bears witness to Mary's yes to conceive the Savior of the World. But even in her pregnancy, she goes to care for Elizabeth. Now Mother to all the world, Mary comes to the aid of her children, reminding them of her presence among them. A few weeks ago, Rosie our neighbor in the Philippines was diagnosed with breast cancer. From what I had heard, the hospital sent her home and the doctors refused to treat her. Her sickness was so advanced that it was considered hopeless. But she never gave up. She went from one hospital to another until she finally found one with a doctor willing to admit and treat her. I called her and promised to pray for her healing. After two weeks, I called her again and was surprised; she was at home and was in high spirits. She was recovering well. On the second Sunday of Advent we hear the voice of John the Baptist crying out in the desert. He was a sign of protest and of hope as well. He embodied our longing for something better and different. Against the background of the powerful and the wealthy, the prophet shouted: prepare the way of the Lord John the Baptist is showing us a better way to live our Christian life, the way to repentance and renewal. Let us choose the path of simplicity and humility. This is the path where the Lord our Messiah will be born into our lives. While the world may tell us to give in and give up, the Word of the Lord is calling us to faithfulness and perseverance. The Lord will never give up on us. Fr. Rick REST IN PEACE ROSARIO CONDE We will have a funeral Mass for Rosario on Saturday, December 15th at 11am. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS COLLLECTION THIS WEEKEND Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today's special collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous. There are special envelopes in the pews for this collection.

The painting is housed at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Our St. Didacus Choir will be performing at this event on Sunday, December 16th from 4pm-6pm. All of us are called to go and preach to all nations see Matthew 28:19. Our preaching is not necessarily on distant shores but to our families, our children, our husband or wife, our coworkers. And we are called to preach not with words, but by our everyday lives. Only by sacrifice, the giving up of all selfish gain are we free to bear the Good News to the world. Sacrifice is leaving yourself behind at times for a greater good, the good of prayer, the good of helping someone in need, the good of just listening to another. The greatest gift we have is our time. The Gospel According to Luke The Lectionary, the collection of Scripture readings used during our liturgical celebrations, is divided into a three-year cycle of Sunday readings, Years A, B, and C. Each year is devoted to selected readings from one synoptic Gospel. Year A relies on Matthew; Year B draws from Mark; and Year C focuses on passages from Luke s Gospel. Only Matthew and Luke give us infancy narratives, accounts of the birth and early life of Jesus. While they agree on a number of details, the stories are very different, usually emphasizing the key theological themes and concerns of the authors. Luke has Mary and Joseph involved in a difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where there is not room for them to lodge. There in a stable Mary gives birth to Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, and places him in a manger. Whether the details are historically accurate or not, the story beautifully captures the theological intent of the author. For Luke, Jesus is the savior come for all people, most especially the poor, homeless, and marginalized. Jesus is their source of comfort, nourishment for their hunger and support in time of need. What better way to portray that than to have Jesus experience the life of the poor from the very moment of birth. Modeling ourselves on Jesus, how are we attuned to the needs of the poor around us? Liturgical Publications, Inc. Seven French Trappist monks (the story of these monks of Tibhirine was told in the film Of Gods and Men) and 12 other clergy killed by extremists in Algeria in the 1990s will be beatified on December 8th during a ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Cruz in the Algerian city of Oran on the feast of the Immaculate Conception the first ceremony of its kind in a Muslim nation. The Algerian bishops describe the event as a great joy. May their example help us in our life today, the bishops added. This beatification will be a call for the Church and the world to build together a world of peace and fraternity. PLEASE HELP Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego is raising funds to help migrant families being released by immigration authorities in our region. These families, many with small children, have traveled long distances to flee extreme conditions that threaten their lives. They have received permission to remain in the U.S. legally while awaiting the outcome of their application for asylum. Catholic Charities is raising funds to help them to travel to unite with family members in the U.S. Donations may be made through this site: Sharejourneysd.org/families. This is the best single way to help Catholic Charities help those in need. Monetary donations are their greatest need at this time.
