REFLECTION and PREPARATION Psalm 16:1-2 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you. Many times the Psalms tell us to take refuge in God alone. Taking refuge means that we seek and find our joy in Him. We naturally chase after things which we think will bring us joy. But earthly things cannot satisfy us. Blaise Pascal warns us, There once was in man a true happiness of which now remain to him only the mark and empty trace, which he in vain tries to fill from all his surroundings, seeking from things absent the help he does not obtain in things present. But these are all inadequate, because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable object, that is to say, by God Himself. 2
WORSHIPING GOD S GREATNESS (*Indicates where congregation is invited to stand, as able) *CALL to WORSHIP Psalm 100:1-5 Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the LORD is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. 3
*SONG of ADORATION When Morning Gilds The Skies Words and Music: Edward Caswall and Joseph Barnby When morning gilds the skies, My heart awaking cries: May Jesus Christ be praised. Alike at work and prayer, To Jesus I repair: May Jesus Christ be praised! Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find: May Jesus Christ be praised. Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this: May Jesus Christ be praised! In heav n s eternal bliss, The loveliest strain is this: May Jesus Christ be praised. The powers of darkness fear, When this sweet chant they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this, while life is mine, My canticle divine: May Jesus Christ be praised. Be this th eternal song, Through all the ages on: May Jesus Christ be praised! *PRAYER of INVOCATION 4
ACKNOWLEDGING GOD S GRACE CONFESSION of FAITH The Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1 Minister: Congregation: What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I belong - body and soul, in life and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, Who at the cost of His own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that He protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit His purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. 5
CONFESSION of SIN (please, pray the following in unison) Merciful God, You pardon all who truly repent and turn to You. We humbly confess our sins and ask for Your mercy. We have not loved You with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with You, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in Your loving-kindness. In Your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Restore to us the joy of Your salvation, and sustain us with Your bountiful Spirit. Amen. ASSURANCE of PARDON 1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 6
SONG of RENEWAL Thy Mercy My God Words: John Stocker Music: Sandra McCracken Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart. and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast. Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground, And weep for the praise of the mercy I ve found. Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine. All praise to the Spirit, whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine. 7

*SONG of CELEBRATION Thou Lovely Source of True Delight Words: Anne Steele (alt. Kevin Twit). Music: Kevin Twit. Thou lovely source of true delight Whom I unseen adore Unveil Thy beauties to my sight That I might love Thee more, Oh that I might love Thee more. Thy glory o er creation shines But in Thy sacred Word I read in fairer, brighter lines My bleeding, dying Lord, See my bleeding, dying Lord Jesus, my Lord, my life, my light Oh come with blissful ray Break radiant through the shades of night And chase my fears away, Won t You chase my fears away Then shall my soul with rapture trace The wonders of Thy love But the full glories of Thy face Are only known above, They are only known above 9
EMBRACING GOD S WORD *READING and PREACHING of GOD S WORD Ephesians 6:1-4 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 10
*SONG of RESPONSE In Christ Alone Words by Keith Getty and Stuart Townsend In Christ alone, my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Til on that cross, as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground, His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious Day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I ll stand! 11

PRAYERS OF REFLECTION Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen 13
