January 20, 2013 Meditations It probably isn t as important to say you need a heart for God as it is to say you need to know God s heart for you. The gospel isn t about your goodness or your work, it s about Christ s goodness and work for you. -Steve Brown Readings to help you engage with God and worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat and continue preparing for worship by praying, reading the meditation quotes above, or singing along.

10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) Words and music: Matt Redman, Jonas Myrin 2011 Thankyou Music Psalm 103:1-5 CCLI #: 11107331 We gather in the presence of God Song of Gathering The sun comes up, it s a new day dawning, It s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His Holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I ll worship Your Holy name! You re rich in love, and You re slow to anger. Your name is great, and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near and my time has come. Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, Ten thousand years and then forevermore. God is present with us in worship. Declaring this together turns our hearts and minds toward Him. Psalm 100 Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! People: Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Please stand if able. Leader: Know that the Lord, he is God! People: It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! People: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. 2

Song of Praise Come ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore. Jesus, ready, stands to save you, Full of pity joined with power. He is able, He is able, He is willing, doubt no more. Come ye needy, come and welcome; God s free bounty glorify: True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money Come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come ye weary, heavy laden, Bruised and broken by the fall. If you tarry till you re better, you will never come at all. Scripture Reading One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee s house and reclined at the table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Say it, Teacher. A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more? Simon answered, The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt. And he said to him, You have judged rightly. Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little. And he said to her, Your sins are forgiven. Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, Who is this, who even forgives sins? And he said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Not the righteous, not the righteous; Sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream. All the fitness He requires is to feel your need of Him. This He gives you, this He gives you, Tis the Spirit s rising beam. Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of His blood. Venture on Him; venture wholly, Let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus Can do helpless sinners good. repeat Come Ye Sinners Words: Joseph Hart Music: Matthew Smith 2000 detuned radio music Luke 7:36-50 3

A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together. We confess our sin and receive grace Confession of Sin Lord and Father, every faculty I have betrays my sin: My mouth boasts and speaks ill of others; my mind is self-obsessed and confused. My eyes find things to covet; my ears hear compliments rather than the needs of others. My hands serve myself and grab for more; my feet dig in their heels against Your calling. All this comes from a heart that doubts Your love and seeks its own glory. Wretched person that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Only Your Son, Jesus Christ, whose righteousness is mine by grace through faith. Forgive my sin and renew me, for Jesus sake and for Your glory. Through the Holy Spirit, make me more like Him in my thoughts, words, and deeds. Amen. Silent Confession 1 John 4:10 Assurance of Pardon This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. In Christ Alone Words and music: Keith Getty & Stuart Townend 2002 Thankyou Music 4 Song of Renewal In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again. And as He stands in victory, Sin s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me. From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand. Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I ll stand.

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all. Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Philippians 3:3-8 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by pastor Matt Lorish. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh - 4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion should pick them up at this time. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper Gluten-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. At the back of the fellowship hall is someone ready to pray with and for you. Song of Communion Jesus, I am resting, resting, In the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness Of Thy loving heart. Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, and Thy beauty fills my soul, For by Thy transforming power, Thou hast made me whole. Jesus, I am resting, resting, In the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness Of Thy loving heart. Oh, how great Thy loving kindness, Vaster, broader than the sea! Oh, how marvelous Thy goodness, Lavished all on me! Yes, I rest in Thee, beloved, Know what wealth of grace is Thine, Know Thy certainty of promise, And have made it mine. Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, I behold Thee as Thou art, And Thy love, so pure, so changeless, Satisfies my heart; Satisfies its deepest longings, Meets, supplies its every need, Compasseth me round with blessings, Thine is love indeed! Ever lift Thy face upon me, As I work and wait for Thee. Resting neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus, Earth s dark shadows flee. Brightness of my Father s glory, Sunshine of my Father s face, Keep me ever trusting, resting, Fill me with Thy grace. Communion at Northside is a patient, relaxed time. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Jesus, I Am Resting Words: Jean S. Pigott, 1876 Music: David B. Hampton 1998 New Spring Publishing 7

We go forth to love and serve God and neighbor. The Doxology Words: Thomas Ken Music: Louis Bourgeois Public domain God sends us out refreshed Song of Rejoicing Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Every Ditch, Every Valley Words and music: Peter La Grand 2008 Isaiah 40 A voice says Cry out: All men are like grass, And their time of glory soon shall pass. But the word of God, it will never die. Surely it will stand For eternity! Every ditch and valley shall be raised up, Every hill and mountain be made low, Every rugged place will be made flat, Everybody shall see the glory of the LORD. You who bring good news, raise your voice and shout, Do not be afraid to speak the name of God. The hard days are gone, the debt has been paid, And the time has come to walk the righteous way. (x2) Everybody shall see the glory of the LORD.
