Movements Prayer Journal The Great Commission Global Prayer Movement November 2007 this month s focus: Jesus the Movement Builder Preparing the Way! Our pleasure and our duty Though opposite before Since we have seen His beauty Have joined to part no more. To see the law by Christ fulfilled And to hear His pardoned voice Transforms a slave into a child And duty into choice. Hymn by John Newton (1725-1807)
In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied; For ev ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow r of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow r of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home Here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand. Jesus chose in eternity past to temporarily veil His deity so that His humanity could be fully expressed. He did not dip into His deity to live out his humanity. The resources that were available to Jesus are the resources available to you and me. Jesus is our model for life and ministry. - Dr. Dann Spader 2006. Used by permission. Saturday, Nov. 3 1 Peter 2:20-25 Meditate on this fact: The man Jesus never sinned by retaliating. Sunday, Nov. 4 1 John 2:20-25 Consider Jesus, who is fully human and fully divine but never sinned. By Henry Blackaby There should never be a time when a believer should not have his attention directed to God. God is faithful. God is always present and always active in the midst of every situation. Our fellowship with Him should be uninterrupted and unbroken. In every circumstance God has something to say. This is why Jesus desires that our prayer life be a continual 24/7 way of life. Paul knew this as well. His attention was constantly directed toward God and he urged every believer to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). In a solemn closing remark (Luke 18:8) Jesus adds, When the Son of Man comes, will he really find faith on the earth? Will He find His people in persistent, fervent prayer? You see, Jesus knew from His own life how essential prayer was to be in every life. But He wondered if people would possess the type of faith required for such a prayer life. May we not disappoint Him by ceasing to pray. Monday, Nov. 5 John 2:12 Ask Christ to enable His followers to identify teams of like-minded individuals committed to ministry involvement. Tuesday, Nov. 6 John 3:22 Intercede for busy staff members to imitate Jesus in spending time with growing disciples. The Master disclosed God s strategy of world conquest. Weighing every alternative and variable factor in human experience, He conceived a strategy that would not fail. - Robert Coleman, The Master Plan of Evangelism 3
So many people minimize the obedience of Christ by saying of course Jesus obeyed, He was God and had God s nature in Him; He had no choice. Scripture does not allow us to draw this conclusion. It presents Christ as a man who faced every temptation and succeeded, not because He relied upon His divine nature, but because He relied upon the Word, prayer and the Spirit. And He succeeded all the way to the cross even death on the cross. - Dr. Bruce Ware, Southern Seminary Wednesday, Nov. 7 Mark 12:28-31 Friday, Nov. 9 Pray that movements everywhere will build on a foundation of the Greatest Commandment. Thursday, Nov. 8 Matthew 13:53-56 Pray for young Christ-followers to learn readily how to live among family members as their lives begin to change. 1 John 4:19-21 Saturday, Nov. 10 May highly visible Christians be filled with love for their brothers, the fruit of the Spirit. Hebrews 2:10-18 Schedule in some time to ponder why Jesus had to become a human being. 4
What Will Be The Legacy You Leave Behind? By Dan Puckett, Life Action Ministries There is much talk about legacy. Legacy is what you leave behind. We must be careful that we seek not to write our own legacy, but that we live before God in such a way that others will write and follow our legacy. The writer of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes gave a guideline for legacy in Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verse 11, He [God] has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in [our] hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. It would be great to have the plan for our lives clearly charted out, and be able to go step by step. However, it does not work that way. God, being God, demands control and desires us to be subservient to His will. The prophet Jeremiah spoke about legacy in Jeremiah, chapter 45, verse 5, Do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh, says the LORD. But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go. Jeremiah was speaking of how tentative life is. We do not know the future. We must fully exhaust every opportunity God gives us to glorify Him. If we seek our glory, rather than God s, we will stumble and soon be forgotten. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes, [God] has made everything beautiful in its time. Our purpose is not to leave a legacy, but to be submitted to God s purpose to be made like His Son, Jesus Christ. One thing is sure: if what you are involved in is not forming the life of Christ in you, it is not of God. Every event and every person has been placed in our lives for His glory to be shown. He has put eternity in [our] hearts. Think how much energy an atheist must expend being an atheist. Not only does he have to deny the glory of all he sees, but he must oppose the inward urgings of his heart about eternity. Only the gall of bitterness can energize one who opposes God the Creator. Granted, eternity can take on many forms as it is manipulated by man s ideas rather than God s Word, but be sure of this, eternity will go just like God wants it to. Solomon said, No one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. God s works and God s ways do not have to make sense to us. The prophet Isaiah declares in Isaiah, chapter 55, verses 8-9, For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. Too many times God begins something His way and, as it gains momentum, the ways of man take over to maintain it. (continued on next page...) 5 Sunday, Nov. 11 Luke 2:40,51,52 Let your mind dwell on Jesus youth, as His earthly family s oldest (and sinless) child. Monday, Nov. 12 Colossians 2:8,9 Entreat the Lord to keep every movement spiritual, depending only on Jesus. Tuesday, Nov. 13 John 5:18 Pray that every movement plan will be made with the goal of glorifying Christ. Wednesday, Nov. 14 Acts 1:12-14 As with Jesus earliest disciples, may prayer saturate every aspect of life and ministry.
Thursday, Nov. 15 Luke 5:15,16 Ask God to give members of our exploding movements the freedom to slip away and pray as Christ often did. When a man is at his wits end, it is not a cowardly thing to pray; it is the only way he can get in touch with Reality. Friday, Nov. 16 Mark 1:35-39 Pray for Christians to seek and find solitary places where they can hear God. Saturday, Nov. 17 Luke 4:1-15 Consider this: Jesus public ministry was launched immediately following an extended period of prayer, fasting and temptation. Sunday, Nov. 18 Luke 22:39-46; 23:34,46 - Oswald Chambers (...continued from previous page) Soon, the evidence of the hand of God is gone and what God started becomes another human endeavor. What is our legacy? It should be that each day is received as a gift from God (Psalm 118:24). Focus on God s purpose. He wants to be God and show Himself strong on our behalf (2 Chronicles 16:9). God is looking for loyal hearts, hearts that yearn only to glorify Him at personal expense. A great tragedy of humanness is compartmentalization. When we compartmentalize, we close off areas of our lives and our availability to God, and give Him the leftovers. Everything in life must be available to God every day. To be self-protective is godless and evil, because what we protect becomes an idol. William Borden was very wealthy. God touched his life, he divested his fortune, and he became a missionary. He contracted a disease and died soon after arriving on the mission field. His final thoughts have become his legacy and should challenge us, No reserves. No retreats. No regrets. Human reasoning would conclude, What a waste. But William Borden s legacy in an untimely death has touched more people than he might ever have reached had he lived. Live life to glorify God; legacy will take care of itself. Remember: Jesus (first) earthly ministry also ended with prayers to His and our Father. 6 Dan and his wife, Vicci, have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. They make their home in Buchanan, Michigan. In 1977 Dan and his family joined Life Action Ministries, where he has served as a summit revivalist, staff pastor, outreach director, and camp director. Currently, Dan is serving as Operations Director for Life Action. He is also frequently called on for summit and other speaking engagements.
Monday, Nov. 19 Matthew 14:22-23 Ask God to make us alert to the teachable episodes He provides, as movements grow and multiply. Over 45 sections of Scripture covering 30 events record how Jesus would often slip away to pray. For Jesus, prayer was a source of strength, a time to learn His Father s heart, and a time to listen to His Father s desires. 2006. Used by permission. Martin Luther: This life therefore is not righteousness but growth in righteousness; not health but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be but we are growing toward it; the process is not yet finished but it is growing on; this is not the end but it is the road.
