REFORMATION Service The Door of Fulfillment October 26 & 27, 2013 AS WE GATHER Service is the door of fulfillment. As we worship this Reformation weekend, we recall Luther s admonishment to serve, help, and protect our neighbor in his explanations to the second table of the law (commandments 4-10) in the Small Catechism. In today s message we learn about the seven steps to servanthood. 5:00 PRESERVICE MUSIC A Mighty Fortress Bell Choir WELCOME The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. Psalm 23:1-3 HANDSHAKES & HUGS + PREPARATION + We rise and face the cross at the entrance of the sanctuary. PROCESSIONAL HYMN #656 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from every need That hath us now o er taken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of Sabaoth Lord, And there s none other God; He holds the field forever. Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not over pow r us. This world s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none. He s judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. The Word they till shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He s by our side upon the plain With His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict ry has been won The Kingdom ours remaineth. 1 INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: What is the First Commandment? People: You shall have no other gods. Pastor: What does this mean? People: We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Pastor: Because our fear, love, and trust has wandered away from God to other things, let us call to mind our sin and confess it before God so that we may live in the forgiveness promised in our Holy Baptism. O almighty God, People: our Creator and Redeemer: we confess that we have been careless in our appreciation of your mercy and grace. We have been forgetful of all that you have done for our salvation and the world. Our neglect of your Word has impoverished our faith from receiving your gifts. By the blood of Jesus pleading for us before your throne and in your great mercy cleanse us of our sin and create in us new hearts that we may truly fear, glorify, and worship you all the days of our life. Pastor: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. In the name of Jesus and by His authority I proclaim to you the forgiveness of all your sins. Live in the freedom of your Holy Baptism in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. 5:00 & 8:00 HYMN OF PRAISE #506 Glory Be to God the Father Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son, Glory be to God the Spirit: Great Jehovah, Three in One! Glory, glory While eternal ages run! Glory, blessing, praise eternal! Thus the choir of angels sings; Honor, riches, pow r, dominion! Thus its praise creation brings. Glory, glory, Glory to the King of kings! 10:30 HYMN OF PRAISE Give Thanks 2

Give thanks give thanks give thanks SALUTATION Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to your Church your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. + WORD + FIRST READING Acts 2:43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. SECOND READING 1 Peter 4:7-11 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 3 5:00 ANTHEM O Church Arise St. Paul s Choir HOLY GOSPEL John 8:31-36 (The truth will set you free.) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. They answered him, We are Abraham s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free? Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. CHILDREN S MESSAGE 5:00 & 8:00 SERMON HYMN #578 Thy Strong Word Stanzas 1-3 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; At Thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank Thee, While Thine ordered seasons run. Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, Dark as night and deep as death, Broke the light of Thy salvation, Breathed Thine own life breathing breath. Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; Bright with Thine own holiness, Glorious now, we press toward glory, And our lives, our hopes confess. 10:30 SERMON HYMN In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light my strength my song This Cornerstone this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love what depths of peace When fears are stilled when strivings cease My Comforter my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone who took on flesh Fulness of God in helpless babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save Till on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live 4

There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand Till He returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I ll stand Here in the power of Christ I ll stand SERMON Service: The Door of Fulfillment Acts 2:43 & 1 Peter 4:7-11 NICENE CREED (found on the inside back cover of the hymnal) OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. 5:00 BELL ANTHEM DURING OFFERING Built on the Rock PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor Bender After each petition: Pastor: God, our refuge and strength, People: hear our prayer. At the conclusion of the prayers: Pastor:... through Jesus Christ, our Lord. THE LORD S PRAYER WORDS OF OUR LORD + SACRAMENT + THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI HYMN (Tune #702 My Faith Looks Up to Thee) O Lamb of God, we pray: Take all our sins away - Our faith increase. Have mercy on us all, Strengthen us when we fall, Answer our fervent call And grant us peace. Text: Copyright (c) 1991 Concordia Publishing House. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Tune: OLIVET. Public domain. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. 5:00 BELL ANTHEM Grace Alone 5:00 & 8:00 HYMN #832 Jesus Shall Reign Jesus shall reign where er the sun Does its successive journeys run: His kingdom stretch from shore to shore Till moons shall wax and wane no more. To Him shall endless prayer be made, And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With ev ry morning sacrifice. People and realms of ev ry tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name. Blessings abound where er He reigns: The pris ners leap, unloose their chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all who suffer want are blest. Let ev ry creature rise and bring Honors peculiar to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen. HYMN #566 By Grace I'm Saved By grace I m saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stager at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No! Then this word must true remain: By grace you too will life obtain. By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; Our works and conduct have no worth. God in His love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, And we are saved by grace alone. 5 6

By grace God s Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit That Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought Him from His heav nly throne. By grace! This ground of faith is certain; As long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, What in His Word our God commands, Our faith in what our God has done Depends on grace-grace through His Son. By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation s furnace tried, By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father s heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? By grace! On this I ll rest when dying; In Jesus promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart s condition, I also know my Savior s voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. HYMN #617 O Lord, We Praise Thee O Lord we praise Thee, bless Thee, and adore Thee, In thanksgiving bow before Thee. Thou with Thy body and Thy blood didst nourish Our weak souls that they may flourish: O Lord, have mercy! May Thy body, Lord, born of Mary, That our sins and sorrows did carry, And Thy blood for us plead In all trial, fear, and need: O Lord, have mercy! Thy holy body into death was given, Life to win for us in heaven. No greater love than this to Thee could bind us; May this feast there-of remind us! O Lord, have mercy! Lord, Thy kindness did so constrain Thee That Thy blood should bless and sustain me. All our debt Thou hast paid; Peace with God once more is made: O Lord, have mercy! May God bestow on us His grace and favor That we follow Christ our Savior And live together here in love and union Nor despise this blest Communion! O Lord, have mercy! Let not Thy good Spirit forsake us; Grant that heav nly-minded He make us; Give Thy Church, Lord, to see Days of peace and unity: O Lord, have mercy! 10:30 Seek Ye First Seek ye first the kingdom of God And His righteousness And all these things Shall be added unto you Allelu, Alleluia Man shall not live by bread alone But by ev ry word that proceeds From the mouth of God Allelu, Alleluia Ask and it shall be given unto you Seek and ye shall find Knock and the door shall be opened unto you Allelu, Alleluia, Allelu, Alleluia You Are My All In All You are my strength When I am weak You are the treasure That I seek You are my all in all Seeking You as a precious jew l Lord to give up I d be a fool You are my all in all Taking my sin My cross my shame Rising again I bless Your name You are my all in all When I fall down You pick me up When I am dry You fill my cup You are my all in all HYMN #617 O Lord, We Praise Thee O Lord we praise Thee, bless Thee, and adore Thee, In thanksgiving bow before Thee. Let not Thy good Spirit forsake us; Grant that heav nly-minded He make us; Give Thy Church, Lord, to see Days of peace and unity: O Lord, have mercy! COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to you, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore you that of your mercy you would strengthen us through the same, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The almighty and merciful God, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit bless you.
