Rashi comments that Noach was lacking in emunah. Noach entered the teivah only when the waters of the flood forced him to seek refuge, for he believed - but at the same time did not believe - that the mabul would happen. After speaking directly to Hashem and investing so much time in building the teivah, how could Noach have any doubt that the flood would come? Noach thought that Hashem's warning of a mabul was only for the purpose of motivating the people of the generation to repent, with the assumption that during the years that it would take him to build the teivah, the people would mend their ways and avoid the disaster. Noach believed that Hashem, Who is full of compassion, would not bring about such a catastrophe as a global flood. He could not comprehend how anything constructive could possibly result from such devastation. Therefore, he did
2 of 8 10/19/2017, 7:58 PM not believe that the flood would actually materialize. Belief in Hashem should not necessitate understanding His ways. Emunah means having the conviction that everything that happens is part of Hashem's Divine design. What seems to us to be hard, challenging, and even tragic, is also somehow for the good. If we continue to serve Hashem even under difficult conditions then we can hope to merit witnessing the day on which Hashem's kindness will become obvious for all to see. This was not practical kashrus information, as humans were not yet permitted to consume meat. Yet there was still a certain degree of relevance to the people of the time - they were only allowed to bring korbonos from kosher animals. When Noach is instructed how to populate the ark, he is to seek out the kosher animals, whereas the non-kosher animals would come to him. But why the distinction?
