SIRMON FAMILY DOCUMENTATION Pitt County, North Carolina Sirmon Families PDF Document Format Document Index Thomas Sirmon, Jr. John Sirmon Edward Sirmon Job Sirmon Note: Double click icon for instructions. What is known of the early Sirmons in Pitt County is shown below. The purpose of listing the summary of these Sirmons is the hope that we can link the North Carolina Sirmons to the Maryland Sirmons. The four early Sirmons documented in Pitt County were: Thomas, Jr., John, Edward, and Job. A Thomas (T) Sirman witnessed a deed from Izabel Cradle to John Sirman in Hyde County on 8 March 1762. It appears that this Thomas moved from Hyde County to Pitt County as did John. John lived in Hyde County for approximately fifteen years before moving to Pitt County where his will was probated in the October Term 1798 court. Edward later moved from Pitt County to Georgia. Job is listed on the 1775 Census for Pitt County but later moved (back?) to Hyde County.

Thomas Sirmon, Jr. Thomas Sirmon, Jr. - Thomas is listed in Captn CANNON's District, as was John Sirmon, on the same 1775 Pitt County census with a household as follows: 1 male of age [Thomas]; 1 male under age [John]; 1 female of age [wife]; 4 females under age. On the 1790 census we find that Thomas Surman's household shows 2 males above 16 years, 1 male below the age of 16 years, and 5 females. Thomas Surman had a son named John who is named in a deed from "T" Thomas to John Anderson in 1798, in which he specifies a tree to be the dividing line with "his son John." John married Euphaney English the daughter of Thomas English. The land inherited by Euphaney from her father was sold in 1816 along with the land that John had bought from his father the "T" Thomas Surman (part of the 1783 grant). John Sirmon John Sirmon m. ca. 1750s to Elizabeth? -- John and Elizabeth appear to have lived in Hyde County until the 1770s when on 16 May 1772 John sold 125 acres to John Jennett, Sr. This is land which he had purchased from Matthias Miller and his wife Prudence Miller. They probably moved from Hyde County to Pitt County at this time since the family was included on a list of the number of souls in Capt. CANNON's District of the 1775 Pitt County census. John's household shows: 1 male of age (over 16 years)[john]; 2 males under age (under 16 years)[levi and Eli]; 1 female of age [Elizabeth]; 1 female under age [Betty]. It should be noted that in John's will dated 7 October 1777 he names three daughters as being Eunice English, Nelly Barber and Mary Martin(?). Therefore, these three daughters must have been the older children and married at the time of the 1775 census. The will indicates that John and family lived on the north side of Sandy Run. On the 1790 Census, we find listed Eli Sirman's household: 1 male over 16 yrs; 1male under 16 yrs; 1 female. Also listed on this 1790 census is the household of a John Sirman as: 1 male over 16 yrs; 2 males under 16 yrs; 4 females. The makeup of ages in this household make it more likely that this John is the son of Thomas, Jr. (see below) instead of the elder John. Also, the will of the elder John was probated in 1798. If it is the elder John, he must have grandchildren in his household. Levi has probably gone to Georgia. Of course he could have left his family with his father, which would account for the younger members in the household? Of some interest on the 1790 census is the listing of John Numans next door to George Moye. George Moye was the witness to the 1776 will of the older John Sirmon. Therefore, it is possible that the John Sirman listed could be the son of the Thomas Surman listed and the John Numans could be the older John Sirmon who it is thought could possibly be the brother of Thomas who is the father of the young John. The John Numans household shows 1 male above 16 years, 2 females, and six slave. The six slaves may prevent one from believing that this is the old John since we are unaware of his ever owning slaves. Of course another possibility could be that the old John is living with one of his children in 1790. Since his 1776 will did not mention his wife Elizabeth, it is possible that he was widowed at that time. He was probably between 50 and 60 at the time he made the will. DESCENDANTS OF JOHN SIRMON I. John Sirmon (1), b. 1720s, d. abt. 1798; m. ca. 1750 to Elizabeth? (The children are listed in the order they were mentioned in John's will.) A. Eunice Sirmon (2), b. 1750?; m. bef. 1776 to? English B. Nelly Sirmon (2), b. 1753?; m. bef. 1776 to? Barber C. Mary Sirmon (2), b. 1756?; m. bef. 1776 to? Martin?? D. Levi Sirmon (2), b. 1759?, d. ca. 1799 in Montgomery County, GA; m. to Elizabeth? Levi served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Child's Company of the North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line. His date of enlistment/or appointment is given as 20 Jul 1778. Using the 1775 census, two males under the age of 16, to determine his age it would appear that he would have been about 18/19 years of age when he enlisted. The term of enlistment was stated as nine months. 1. Nathan Sirmon (3), b. ca. 1786, d. 17 Apr 1850 in Conecuh County, AL; m/1 7 Nov 1806 in Jackson County, GA to Lucretia Dean, b.?, d. bef. 1838 in AL; m/2 20 Nov 1838 to Nancy Mansell in Conecuh County, AL. (At the time of his marriage to Lucretia Dean, Nathan was living in Clarke County, GA) E. Eli Sirmon (2), b. 1761? F. Betty Sirmon (2), b. 1763?

Edward Sirmon Edward Surmon appears on the 1762, 1763, and 1764 Tax Lists of Pitt County. Listed as a taxable with him was Joseph Surmon. Does this indicate that Joseph is a son of Edward who is of the age (above 16 years?) to be taxable or could Joseph be a younger brother of Edward? In 1763 there is an indenture for Edward Serman of Pitt County for 50 acres land on the south side of Grindel Creek, a place called the Red Oak Island. This indenture was signed by Edward and is the only document available with his true signature. In 1771, Edward sold 50 acres of land located on south side of Grindel Creek at a place called Red Oak Island to Thomas Gwaltney. In 1772, Edward Sirman witnessed a deed where William Travis sold to John Sirmon 220 acres of land on the north side of Sandy Run. Two years later Edward Sirman witnessed a deed where Susanna Evans of Pitt County sold lands of her late husband Richard Evans. Edward is listed in the census of 1775 of Pitt County with a total of 8 souls in his household: 1 white male from 16-50 [Edward]; 3 white males under 16 [Josiah, Jonathan,?]; 1 white woman [Rachel]; 3 female white children. In 1778, Edward Sirman entered 200 acres of land on the north side of Hardees Run, bounded by John Simpson's entry, Samuel Tison's line, the? Branch, and his own line. Also in 1778, Edward entered 200 acres on the south side of Tarr River. The land bordered Evans, Craft, the Mill Pond to a corner of the old tract, and with that line to the beginning. Edward bought 300 acres of land on the west side of Mills Run from John Simpson in 1781. In 1782 Edward received land from the State of North Carolina and in 1783 he and Rachal Sirmon sold land to Peter Diggens. Apparently, it was about this time that Edward left Pitt County and moved to Dobbs County since there is a 1783 deed that states Edward Sirman of Dobbs County sold to Peter Diggins of Pitt County by estimation 500 acres of land situated in Pitt County on the west side of Mills Run now called Hardees Run. Rachel Surman signed this deed with her mark. Probably about this time (1783) Edward bought land in Dobbs County from Peter Diggins. Between 1784-1789 Edward Surean (Sirman) sold land in Dobbs to Henry Taylor. (This entry is also listed in the Grantee Index to Deeds 1746-1880 for Johnston, Dobbs, and Lenoir counties.) By 1790 Edward and his son, Josiah, had moved to Effingham County, Georgia, and Edward's son Jonathan was on the 1790 U. S. Census for Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Edward died in Bulloch County, Georgia, in 1805. His son Jonathan eventually moved to Mississippi around 1811. The above information on Edward Sirman was provided by Audrey and Jack Sirman.
