FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The donations for our bells are coming in, though we are still short of what we need. If you are considering helping us to ring in Christmas, please try to get your donation in early so that the company will have time to install the new system. Any gift would be most appreciated. The Gospel this week focuses on St. John the Baptist. In the historical account, St. John goes throughout the region proclaiming a baptism of repentance leading to the forgiveness of sins. The Gospel uses the words of Isaiah the prophet to describe the work of St. John. His place in salvation history is to Prepare the Way of the Lord. Let us use these days of Advent to prepare the way of the Lord to enter into our hearts this Christmas As St. John called for the forgiveness of sin, let us use the opportunities presented to us to receive the Sacrament of Penance. Of special note is this coming Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary when we will join with our friends there for the celebration of a Communal Penance Service with individual confession of sins to a priest. Perhaps after the Service you might consider having a meal at one of the restaurants in Little Italy. May God s blessings be yours on this Advent. Father Ireland The next gathering of Reaffirming the Faith will be in the Mary s Room in the Church on Wednesday evening, December 12, at 7:15. Our focus will continue to be Brant Pitre s book, A Case for Jesus. Please plan to come to listen and to learn more about the life of Jesus. SEE YOU THERE!! All that is required is a simple wafer paired with love and affection, and the willingness to share it. This centuriesold custom of breaking and sharing Christmas Bread serves as a reminder that Christ is the Unseen Guest in our homes. If this is not your family s tradition, why not begin this year. Each wafer is imprinted with the story of Oplatki and the packaging tells the story of the ritual associated with the custom. Packages of three (3) wafers available in the Parish Office now for a donation of $3/package. COLLECTION 12/2/18: $ 10,059.05 12-wk. Avg: $ 9,136.00 12/3/17: $ 9,526.89 12-wk. Avg: $ 9,904.00 Thank you to all who faithfully support our parish each week. We depend on your generosity to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ in the Hillcrest area. It is only with your continued and regular support that we can provide the current variety of parish apostolates to them. If you have discontinued your financial support, please consider reinstating that practice. Parents: The children have received their boxes of offering envelopes. Please encourage them to develop the practice of bringing an envelopes weekly when they come to church with you. This week, $6.05 was received from the children s offertory envelopes. Thank you. If you would be interested in a carefree way to contribute to your parish each month, please call Eileen Gerome at the Parish Office Monday thru Wednesday (216.382.7601). She will be happy to assist you in setting up this option with either the Sts. Margaret and Gregory Credit Union or the bill payer feature with your own personal banking institution. Father Ireland Will we hear the bells on Christmas morn this year? There s a great chance they will toll once more via a new carillon system. That s the good news. The dilemna remains: Will any of our very generous parishioners be able to make a donation to help defray the cost which is in excess of $10,000? If you are able, please put your donation in an envelope marked, BELLS or contact Fr. Ireland (216.382.7601).

YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT ACTIVITIES LOOKING AHEAD MARK YOUR CALENDAR Was your childhood filled with memory-making events that have lasted a lifetime so far? Do you remember the very serious practice sessions with Sister Mary while she tried with all her energy and spirit to get your whole Kindergarten class to sing the same words and do the same hand motions to Up on the Housetop for the upcoming Christmas Concert for parents, neighbors and friends of the family? Do you remember how those words to Away in a Manger kept ringing in your ears as you tried to fall asleep the night before the Big Day and you knew for sure YOU would be the one to belt out the wrong note. Well, we think the children in Grades K to 5 from Corpus Christi Academy will have much more poise and confidence than we ever had when they take the stage in the PFC Gym next THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, AT 7 O CLOCK. They are anxious to sing out their hearts to some old and new tunes for your listening pleasure and to get you into the spirit of the season. Please plan to come and sing along if you like!! Attention Young Adults! Join us for some Christmas cheer at 5 p.m.on Saturday, December 15, in Knights Hall (Church basement) for a movie & cookie night! Don t be bashful we are looking forward to sampling your favorite cookie recipes. Cookies-to -share are on the menu of refreshments for the evening. All adults age 21-40 are welcome to attend and bring a friend from here or elsewhere cookies too!! Contact John Mohorcic at jfmohorcic@gmail.com if you have any questions. Parents 21-40 are welcome to bring their children along. They can play while we meet! Our tradition continues ~ We bless statues of the baby Jesus each year on the 3rd Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday. This practice is done also in Rome when on the third Sunday of Advent the Pope invites all of the children to bring statues of the baby Jesus (the Bambinelli) from their nativity scenes to St. Peter s Square to be blessed. The children then take the blessed statues home to be placed in their nativity scenes on Christmas Day. We invite all children to bring their baby Jesus statues to Mass next Sunday, December 16. During Mass, Father will ask the children to come forward with their statues for the Blessing of the Bambinelli. We hope this will help children to come to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas: the gift of Our Blessed Lord Himself, the greatest gift of all. Attention Boys Ages 6 to 18 The Parish is beginning a new apostolate for you very soon. The group will be headed by Mr. Chris Agosti who will conduct an information sharing and getting-to-know you this Sunday, December 9, here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Knights Hall (Church Hall) located in the basement of the Church.

Annual Giving Tree Project sponsored by the Women s Guild Each year, the Women's Guild decorates a Christmas tree with gift request ornaments. It remains in place in front of the altar on the Holy Family side of the church to receive your gifts for the needy until after the 5 p.m. Mass THIS Sunday. YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO JOIN IN ON THIS PROJECT. Simply take an ornament or two from the tree, purchase the gift(s) listed, then return your unwrapped gift before the December 9, 6 p.m. deadline & place it under the tree or take it to the Parish Office BEFORE 9:30 a.m. Monday morning. Donations of gift bags or wrapping paper for parents to use to wrap the gift items will be appreciated and gladly received. Again this year, the Guild is collecting donations of NEW baby items such as bottles, diapers (larger than NB), sleepers, onesies, crib sheets, receiving blankets, etc., or new or gently used maternity tops which will be sent to Birthright, Inc., who will distribute them to needy pregnant moms to help them prepare for the birth of their babies. Any donations should be placed in the cradle near the tree. Our parish has been helping Fatima Center and Birthright, Inc. for many years, and they have always been appreciative of your donations. WE REGRET THAT THE PARISH OFFICE CANNOT ACCEPT ANY DONATIONS AFTER 9:30 MONDAY MORNING. Please Pray for these Intentions...
