ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA CATHOLIC CHURCH, LEONARDTOWN, MARYLAND Scripture Corner SUFFERING AND THE PROPHETS The prophets in the Old Testament and Jesus in the New Testament suffered at the hands of their people. In today s first reading (Ezekiel 2:2-5) God warns Ezekiel concerning the Israelites to whom he is being sent as a prophet: And whether they hear or resist - for they are a rebellious house - they shall know that a prophet has been among them. (vs. 5) The prophets are the real heroes of the Old Testament. Despite great sufferings they remained faithful to the mission God gave them! In today s Gospel (Mark 6:1-6) Jesus comes to Nazareth, his native place. They wonder how Jesus acquired so much wisdom - he was their neighbor! They knew his mother, his brothers and sisters. They also saw our Lord as a carpenter. They took offence at him, because they knew him. Christ said, A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house. (vs. 4) Interestingly Jesus is amazed at their lack of faith. Mostly people are amazed at his miracles. When he raised the daughter of Jairus, for example, the people were utterly astounded. (Mark 5:42) There is a difficult verse in today s Gospel which could be misunderstood: So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. (Mark 6:5) One characteristic of Mark is that he is bluntly honest. He does not intend the verse to be a limitation of the part of the power of Jesus. Rather it is a limitation on the part of the people because they do not have the necessary faith, either explicit or implicit, that our Lord always seeks before performing a miracle. An important theme for Mark throughout his Gospel is the role of the Suffering Servant, as found in the Book of Isaiah. The Servant is pictured as one from whom men turn their faces, spurned and we held him in no esteem. (Isaiah 53:3) The climax of this theme in Mark is found in our Lord s words: For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many [all]. (Mark 10:45) ~Msgr. Ralph J. Kuehner PRAYER & WORSHIP MASS INTENTIONS this WEEK Tuesday, July 10: 12:15 pm Rev. John S. A Sister lives in a religious community that follows a constantly renewed tradition, patterned on the life and teaching of the founder of the community. The work she generally does will depend upon the ministries of that community as influenced by the needs of the Church and its people for example: teaching, social work, administration, nursing, peace and justice ministry, etc. Does the lifestyle of a Sister sound attractive to you? Contact the diocesan vocation office for more information. Let us invoke the intercession of St. Junípero Serra for priestly and religious vocations and pray this week with Chris and Carl Guy, who have the Vocations Cross!
