The First Sunday of Advent December 2, 2018 St. Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. Luke 21:25-28 On this first Sunday of Advent the church begins its preparation for Christmas. Yet how does one prepare for an event that has already happened? The answer is found in today s Gospel which urges us Christians to prepare for Christ s second coming in glory by opening our hearts NOW to his daily presence in our lives. Recently I have been reflecting on the Holy family s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Turned away they ended up in a stable where the Christ child was born that First Christmas morning. I reflect on how ordinary they must have looked - NO angels or bright lights, NO halos or choirs accompanying their journey. And yet the same is true of us - we miss the Lord s desire to stay with us because His coming is often so ordinary. May this Advent awaken our minds and hearts to see the Lord in the ordinary people, places and events of our lives. He knocks - pray we open our hearts. May we then share Christ s love and life in humble service with others. God bless. Let us pray for one another. ************************************************************************************************ Of many things - I am back home from the hospital and under the care of doctors from St. Francis Heart Hospital with orders to reduce my work and try to get some rest. For me, easier said than done - but I have to listen to doctor s orders. Thank you to all who have sent me cards and get well wishes especially with promise of prayers. Your calls, concerns and love are a great support to me on this journey. Please continue to keep me in your prayers as I pray for you every day. - Advent Reconciliation: Monday, December 17, 2018. Please consult today s bulletin for the schedule of confessions as well as a list of priest confessors. Mark your calendar and welcome the gift of God s mercy and love. - The Book of Announced Masses is still open with a limited number of Masses available. Please come to the rectory to arrange for a Mass - only 40 Masses available for all of 2019. 1

St Luke Youth Group and Missionary Sisters of Charity On Saturday, November 17th, ten members of our Youth Group and some of our Team Leaders went to the Missionary Sisters of Charity in the Bronx to help out in their soup kitchen. It truly was amazing to see our young people assist in preparing the meals, serving the lunch, interacting with the homeless men and women and then cleaning up. The sisters were very happy to have their presence. Afterwards, one of the Missionary Sisters of Charity gave us a tour of their convent, a very significant place was the chapel and a room of remembrance of Mother Theresa. The sister gave a beautiful reflection on the saying I Thirst, which can be found in all the chapels around the world in the sister s convent. Our youth had a wonderful day and gave them a good understanding of service.; especially those in most need. They were bringing Jesus to individuals who really thirst and hunger for love, care and God in their lives. During this time of the year as we celebrate Thanksgiving always remember to give thanks to God for all the blessings in your life. Love and peace, Fr. Peter 7

FAMILY MASS - November 11, 2018 On November 11, we celebrated our monthly Family Mass and this month we celebrated with the young children all the things they were thankful for as they prepared for Thanksgiving. Many of the young children were thankful for their parents and family, but they were most importantly thankful about the love and graces God gives them everyday. In the homily I spoke about how every Sunday is Thanksgiving in church, where we can enjoy the Eucharistic banquet with Jesus. The children were anticipating the Eucharistic feast that Jesus had prepared for them at mass but also for the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce they were looking forward to on Thanksgiving Day. Let us be thankful of all the gifts God has given us everyday as we prepare for the coming holidays and the birth of our Lord and Savior. God Bless! Fr. Paul Kim Thank you. to Lenny and Josephine Cesare for their generous donation of the new candle stand in front of the image of Our Lady of Romitello at the front doors of the church. Their gift of $5000 to replace the old and broken stand is an act of devotion and gratitude to Our Lady under title of Our Lady or Romitello. May God bless them for their goodness. From the School.. Oh When the Saints Go Marching In! Everyone wanted to be in that number when the 5th graders presented their saint projects. Weeks of research, writing and costume preparing culminated in entertaining and informative presentations about the lives of the saints. Did you know? Saint Luke was a physician, painter, Gospel writer (including 18 parables only found in his Gospel) - no wonder an amazing school is named after him!
