Tree falls and collapses part of school compound wall A portion of compound wall along with grill gate of Anjugam Higher Secondary School (Jubilee Road, West Mambalam) collapsed when a huge tree adjoining the wall got uprooted and fell on it at 7 p.m on Aug.31. There were no causalities. Chennai Corporation workers cut and removed the tree branches within a couple of hours to clear the way. Trench filled with rain water The 10-foot deep trench dug for erecting a high mast 5-light post in the middle of the road at the junction of Chakrapani Street and Thambiah Road junction (West Mambalam) is filled with rain water. The area has been cordoned off to warn the motorists. Blocked inlets of flyover causes water stagnation The drainage inlets of the Y - shaped flyover on Bazullah Road, T. Nagar, are blocked with garbage and debris. This led to water stagnation on the road during the recent rains. Lakshmi (resident of 31, Lake View Road, West Mambalam) who runs Anbu Karangal (an orphanage and old age home at 1/216, Vivekanander Street, Kottivakkam) has appealed for donations to celebrate Deepavali on Nov. 13. There are more than 100 inmates of which 75 are studying in schools and colleges and the rest are old age persons. Anbu Karangal provides free shelter, food, education and medical assistances to its inmates. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Stray dogs menace in Mambalam Sir, The rapid population growth of stray dogs in West Mambalam is alarming. The canines can often be seen menacingly chasing two-wheelers and cyclists which in turn can lead to fatal accidents. They also target pedestrians and dog attacks have become common in this area. They are favourite companions of beggars and hawkers who harbour and feed them. This is particularly evident near tea shops and encroaching roadside eateries. Families of dogs are now a common sight in public places like temples, parks and government hospitals. Trees topple due to rains An avenue tree on Kuppaiah Street (West Mambalam) toppled and fell across the road at 3 p.m on Oct. 24 after heavy showers. Another tree on Thambiah Road (West Mambalam) toppled at around 8 p.m on the same day. With the onset of monsoon, Chennai Corporation workers have been identifying and axing trees which are likely to topple. Three such trees were axed on Jubilee Road and another on Arya Gowda Road last week. Bad roads lead to residents woes Residents of Mambalam High Road, Rameshwaram Road and Burkitt Road have been suffering for over a year due to bad condition of the roads. There are a number of potholes and deep craters on these roads. The storm water drains are choked. The photo shows Rameswaram Road flooded with water after the heavy rains on Oct. 30. According to the residents, they have appealed vainly to Chennai Corporation to repair and re-lay the roads. According to Ganesh Balaji (owner of a provision shop on Rameswaram Street), with the onset of monsoon, their plight will only increase. He said that due to the bad condition of the road, supply vans either refuse to come or demand a huge amount for deliveries. Whether it is rain or shine, they deliver By Ajai Sreevatsan Before stepping into Guruvappa Street in Kotturpuram, Gopu Govindaraj (56), a postman with 34 years of experience, looks up at the sky and utters a silent prayer. He has been chased by dogs far too many times to keep count. It is a daily affair, he says. I think my uniform makes me look like a Chennai Corporation dog catcher. Sometimes, he drops all the letters in his hand and runs. The barking animal, which is also scared by now, runs in the opposite direction. The spectacle plays out almost every day around 2 p.m. There is also trouble of the bovine kind. If I leave my cycle unattended even for a few minutes, stray cows would start eating all the letters, says Govindaraj. The bull fight that happens in Alanganallur every year is nothing compared to the regular scuffles I have had with cows, while I try to grab money orders from their mouth. The cows especially love thick calendars and books such as Reader s Digest. Whether the subscriber knows or not, the cows roaming on the street know the exact day of delivery and would be waiting. And if I lose items, I ll have to pay the penalty, he adds. It s all part of just another day at work for people like Govindaraj, one of the over 5,000 postmen who roam the streets of Chennai daily, whether it rains or shines. Nearly half of them are temporary staff, and are called delivery agents. Most deliver about 500 letters on an average every day. But they get no special benefits and the pay is not great, they say. The salary could range between Rs. 5,000 and Rs.15,000 per month, depending on seniority and whether they are permanent employees. Dogs chasing postmen might be a funny sight to most people, but without health benefits, some temporary staffers have even died of dog bites, says Govindaraj. He speaks about his friend Selvaraj, who died after a dog bit him while he was on duty in Arumbakkam. We roam around without food and water and look like beggars. There is no respect, Govindaraj says. Few things have changed in the last 20 years in the way postmen do their jobs. The only major difference is that the department has started computerising most post offices, which has made sorting easier. Postmen still have the foot beat and cycle beat system. S. Sadasivam, a postman, says: During the rainy season, we are still given only an umbrella, a practice which was followed during the British Raj. How can I ride a cycle? Since then, there have certainly been some changes. S. Ganga-dharan, who delivers speed posts, sports sunglasses and drives around only on a motorcycle.
