****** Dear Parishioners, In this Season of Stewardship we look to how we can continue to support our parish by embracing prayer, service, and giving financially to the parish. As you saw in the Annual Report, we are blessed with many prayer moments and opportunities to serve. The Parish Pastoral Council invites you to be a part of something bigger. Our Confirmation Candidates who are with us today at the 10:45 a.m. Mass desire to be mature disciples of Christ. In the coming months they will make time for prayer and perform acts of service as they prepare for the Sacrament. These are the first steps that they will make towards an adult faith. On Friday, October 26, or Saturday, October 27, they will attend Holy Fire at UIC, a time to gather with young people from across the Archdiocese of Chicago for a day-long experience centered around prayer, witness, and the joy of missionary discipleship. Discipleship implies engaging in the heart of living the Gospel as witness. Disciples live out their baptismal call to holiness and strive to fulfill the mandate of Jesus to go out to the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. (MK 16:15) Last year, I attended Holy Fire with them for the closing mass with over 5,000 black, brown, white and Asian students all praising God with Cardinal Cupich. Our students were fortunate to bring up the gifts at the offertory time of mass. They were humbled to be chosen to be a part of something bigger a church beyond the parish. They stood shoulder to shoulder in prayer, music, and most importantly at the Eucharist. For that time together at University of Illinois at Chicago, they were not students from St. John Brebeuf Parish, but were a part of the greater whole, Mother Church, the Catholic Church Universal, connected to all believers, enthused about being Catholic, and experiencing the pure joy of standing in God's grace as one leader aptly described it. Renew My Church, an Archdiocese Initiative, desires to do the same for all adults by inspiring the urgent need for renewal and then offering a path for the renewal based on scripture and the life of Christ Jesus. On October 1 and 2, ten parishioners and staff from SJB gathered in Rosemont to be inspired in the same way as the teens were at Holy Fire. We were called to accept the responsibility for the Church and to work to provide for future generations. This dynamic experience with Cardinal Cupich was very similar to the Confirmation Candidates experience at UIC. Father James Mallon led us, over 2,600 strong -- priests, bishops, and parish staffs from across the Archdiocese at this Renew My Church Summit, as they called it. Much of what was presented came from his book Divine Renovation, Bringing your Parish from Maintenance to Mission. Father Mallon

and other presenters tried to address the feeling of being adrift or stymied in trying to understand what was happening in the world and the Church. In the end, the all speakers and discussions endeavored to encourage and strengthen the attendees, motivating them to engage in the renewal process. We were warned that, Checking out is not an option. Yes, grief and perhaps even anger might surface, but to deny or do nothing leads us all down an even more dangerous path. Business as usual is no longer sustainable. There are fewer and fewer priests and even fewer pastors, we know that there is a growing lack of young people, our aging facilities are becoming a burden, and dispirited ministries are all pointing to a death spiral if we choose to ignore and do nothing. Your financial support enables us to support our young families as they seek to know the Lord and give us the resources to look to new ways of ministering and provide hope for the next generations. Thank you to all those that supported the SJB 65th Anniversary Celebration. Special thanks to the event planning committee, to event s sponsor, Skaja, Funeral Home, and to all contributing families. We apologize to Ronda and Paul Goetz who were inadvertently omitted in previous Angel lists. God bless you all. Thank you for your life of prayer, service, and generous financial support. Be a part of something bigger!
