SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO WWW.STLINUS-CHURCH.ORG AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. DECEMBER 9, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT PAGE 4 CALENDAR, MASS INTENTIONS & READINGS Second Sunday of Advent When John proclaimed a baptism of repentance, as today s Gospel relates, he called people to a deep change of heart. For John the Baptist, repentance was not simply regret for past failings, but a commitment to orient life around God s desires and purposes. What might living in alignment with God s desires look like? Our readings offer some clues. Baruch indicates that when mercy and justice are embraced like a royal garment, we may see the fruits of repentance. Paul notes how the Holy Spirit has been active within the church in Philippi, forming them to live in a loving and united community of faith, so they may witness to the love of God. And John himself suggests that a repentant heart clears a path for God to enter, leveling the mountains and valleys of our resistance, so that God might dwell within. HEIGHTS AND DEPTHS John the Baptist preached from the desert. The desert not far from Jerusalem is extremely rugged, where steep hills and deep valleys are common across a barren landscape. When John quoted Isaiah in today s Gospel, this rough terrain stirred the imagination of John s listeners. John proclaimed that these hills and valleys are to be made level, to provide a smooth path for God to enter. John s listeners recognized that the height of hills and the depth of valleys are similar to human attitudes and relationships: heights of personal pride and depths of discouragement and fear. Hills and valleys evoked how people treat each other, with some people raised high and others brought low. They suggested how social structures embody and harden these tendencies with large-scale systems of military, political, or economic oppression. John proclaimed that God was about to alter this social landscape through the work of Jesus. EARTH-MOVING Transforming the human landscape, like the task of smoothing the desert hills and valleys, is an enormous undertaking, truly the work of God. Yet God looks for partners in this transformation. John the Baptist, and Jesus afterward, called followers to participate in God s work, and to begin with repentance. We the Church respond to this call today, and acknowledge our ongoing need for God s mercy and forgiveness. Our Advent preparation for Christmas includes opening our hearts to God s forgiveness, so that Jesus might come to take residence there. We join in God s earth-moving project by repenting of how we block God s path with resentments and fears. When we are brought low in our lives, we seek God s help, and God will enlist the help of others. When we realize that we reside on mountains of advantage or privilege that place others in valleys, we are to repent and to change how we live. When we bring healing and justice to others, we are sharing in God s earth-shaking work, and preparing a straight pathway for our God. 2 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2018 PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1726, Juan de la Cruz (1542-1591) fue canonizado por el Papa Benito XIII. Nació en la región de Castilla en España, este doctor de la Iglesia junto con Teresa de Ávila fue reformador de la Orden Carmelita. Muchas órdenes religiosas del siglo XV sufrieron grandes decadencias. Por eso mientras los protestantes se separaban de la Iglesia, los religiosos descalzos, recoletos y observantes buscaban reformar órdenes religiosas, como la Orden de la Bienaventurada Virgen María del Monte Carmelo, uniéndose siempre más a la Iglesia romana. Para los reformadores católicos quedarse en la Iglesia no fue fácil, sin embargo se quedaron! Aunque sus reformas fueron apoyadas por los Papas, muchos de ellos como Juan de la Cruz tuvieron que aguantar muchas oposiciones y persecuciones para lograr sus reformas. Estas reformas ardían con el deseo de amar bien a Cristo Jesús y a su cuerpo que es la Iglesia. En sus poesías, Juan de la Cruz muestra la fuerza de esta llama de amor vivo a pesar de la oscuridad de la noche que no lo deja encontrar al amante (Dios). Hotel safety tips for the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Christmas are popular travel times, as people gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays. For many people, that means trading in the routines and established safety practices of home for time spent in a hotel. If you and your children are staying in a hotel, take a few minutes to go over the escape route in the event of a fire or emergency. Show your children how to dial out from the room to call 911. It seems the early Church had a different view of Advent than we do. After the resurrection, Christians looked for Jesus to return in glory. They expected this return to happen soon, so we see references in Paul s letters to the coming of the Lord Jesus (1 Thess 3:13) or to the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil 1:6) In the second reading this week, we hear what Paul recommends for the people of Philippi as they wait for the Lord to return. He prays that their love will grow and mature, so that they will be able to discern what is of value. (Phil 1:10) This may sound vague, but is very good advice, even for us today. As we grow to be better Christians, we learn to love what is important. As you grew up, you learned to like healthier foods. That doesn t mean that some foods are bad, (how could nachos be bad?) just that there are better choices. So Paul encourages us to make better choices: friends we like, books we read, how we spend our free time, causes we donate to, and values we teach to our children. With less than three weeks of Advent remaining, let us ask the Lord to help us discern what is of value in our lives.
