In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Dear Parishioners, We are off to a good start for Advent. Our tree lighting and crèche lighting and blessing last Saturday was a happy celebration despite the drizzle. In your name and in my own name, I wrote to the Administration of Maimonides Hospital for their generous gift of $1000.00 for our lighting celebration. The lighting of the Menorah and the lighting of our church s exterior remind us of God s presence and love amidst a world that in many ways is dark. This Wednesday will be the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Under this title, Mary is venerated as the Patroness of the Western Hemisphere, not only Mexico. Our Spanish speaking parishioners will again celebrate the feast on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday evening. On Tuesday, there will be confessions, rosary and adoration, and on Wednesday, there will be a procession beginning at St. Anselm Church to our church for mass at 7:00pm. All are welcome to honor our Blessed Mother. After the mass there will be a fiesta in the gym. Again, all are welcome. Next Sunday, December 16th, we will have a second collection which will be the Christmas Gift for the parish. However, you may bring or mail your gift at your convenience. As you can imagine, the upkeep of almost a city block property and aging buildings presents many expenses. Thank you for your generosity. Thursday, December 13th will be the feast of Saint Lucy, patroness of eyesight. We remember to ask her intercession for our eyes and the grace to use the gift of sight in proper ways. Next Monday, December 17th, will be Advent s Reconciliation Monday. There will be a confessor available in church from 4:00pm. to 8:00pm. Advent, hopefully, is going peacefully for you and that is the wish of your parish priests. Let s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone

Vocations Committee After-School Homework Helpers and High School Tutors Needed at the Brooklyn Public Library The Brooklyn Public Library is offering two exciting volunteer opportunities: The After-School Homework Help program trains volunteers age 16 and over to help children in grades 1-8 with their assignments. Volunteers assist students one-on-one or in small groups with all subjects. The High School Tutor program trains volunteers age 18 and over to help high school students in grades 9-12 in all subjects. High School Tutors support, assist and encourage students as they prepare for standardized tests, apply for college, and complete homework assignments. These programs are an important resource to Brooklyn youth, and volunteers gain both satisfaction from helping others and valuable experience working with children. To apply online: http:// www.bklynlibrary.org/support/volunteer For additional questions: 718-230-2406 Bishop DiMarzio has asked that all parishes establish a Vocations Committee. The purpose of a vocations committee is to meet periodically to discuss prayer, campaigns, distribute materials and other ways that we can support the members of our parish who have been called by our Lord to the religious life, to marriage or to serve in another way. If you would like to participate in such a committee here at Our Lady of Angels Parish, please contact the rectory at 718-836-7200. www.whatsmycalling.org www.brooklynpriests.org BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Where: St. Ephrem Spirituality Center 935 Bay Ridge Parkway (lower level-entance on the right) When: Monday evenings - Dec. 10 & Dec. 17, 2018.
