Lecture Week 3 Thursday, 12 March 2015 Module 3 - The Exile and Return: Beginning or End? Exile- 580 BC Prophets - Lecture Week 5 Thursday, 26 March 2015 10:01 AM Exodus = 1200BC Writers would've been around 800BC - 400 years! The lessons from the story are more important than the details of the story. Those in exodus fit in as a memory of others (the writers etc.) Connect who we are and where we are to the beginning of the universe (Gen) In Egyptian history - reference to samite's Hiksos - established 15th and 16th dynasty's Ahmose - Pharaoh - Born of the God 'Ah' - Sets up the 18th Dynasty - most powerful of Egyptian dynasty's 480BC reference to Solomon building the temple Book of Exodus paints the (who class of) Egyptians as slaves - No record that ALL Egyptians were slaves - Hebrews were probably a low class used as cheap labour - would've seen themselves oppressed as slaves Assessment 2 Assessment section in Leo there is a procedure doc - steps you can take Try and work out what the worker getting at - starting point - Why does the writer shape it this way, why this kind of speech, why metaphors, illusions and exaggeration People tend to crash - don't read it first thoroughly - Need to read it a few times and write down a few things to represent your understanding (BEFORE GETTING SECONDARY SOURCES) - starting to write in own voice - People make mistake from stitching together stuff from other resources Turn to secondary readings to try and fill the gaps in understanding/descriptions World of the text: 3 parts in your essay - Behind the text, of the text, in front of the text World of the text is the biggest part! (middle section)- Metaphors, terms of praise, literature devices used to give impact to the message - how is he getting the message across World in front of the text- how would readers/listeners of those day have interpreted it, how do modern people interpret it. Personal insight (what did you gain from the text) Look at layout on leo The main focus is on the passage!!

Lecture Week 6 Thursday, 2 April 2015 10:02 AM Everything from here on becomes an examinable item!! Exam focuses on New Testament Key words and their relatedness to Babylon: Exile and Return Exodus: Oppression and Liberation The Social World of Jesus (experience of) Empire and Colony New Testament Then, by the time of Jesus The Transition from OT to NT In the time of Jesus people were looking for a new meaning for ancient texts: = The use of typology. Casting contemporary events/people as OT events/people because these stories are symbolic vehicles - they have a continuing power to transmit meaning The Writings of the New Testament Two source hypothesis Existence of other Gospels Historical Developments of the New Testament Canon (don't need to know dates) The early Christians south to respolve the question of diversity by making a list of writings which are diverse - e.g. accepting four gospels with different perspectives, emphasis, facts, etc., instead of trying to minimize the diversity, as Tatian had proposed Four Gospels with different perspectives Is reminiscent of: The Documentary Hypothesis Elijah = John the Baptist (the new Elijah): the precursor of the Jesus the Messiah 1948 - the state of Israel was created (they could return) - Close to 2000 years of exile for the Jews The Roman World of Jesus Jesus So what made the early Jesus movement come to apply the OT categories to Jesus such as: LOOK AT BIBLICAL COMMENTARIES FOR ASSIGNMENT

Lecture Week 7 Thursday, 16 April 2015 10:01 AM Difference between exodus (going out - exit - Moses taking the people out of Egypt into their own land) and exile (not in your own land in a foreign land) Assignment 2 World behind the text: give religious answer to a historical question World of the text: the narrator why is he taking on that view (could link to world behind the text) Don't summarise The world of the text is about saying the context - what comes before and after - How does it fit in with the chapter Find out dates - when it was written - to help figure out what the writer was trying to say New Testament 2 major Jew Parties Cause a revolt As a result of Warfare This covers the religious parties before Jesus - When Jesus arrived there were 50 years of occupation - there was another kind of Religious Movement starting to form in opposition of the Romans Tension between Rome and Jews Gospels The Spirituality of Jesus A Man of Peace New World Order Lecture Week 9 Thursday, 30 April 2015 10:05 AM EXAM: What is the synoptic problem?? - Obvious that borrowing has gone on between Matthew, Mark and Luke - Problems is who came first, and who copied from who? - Modern scolars are convinced that Mark is the earliest gospel 70-ish AC - 15 years later and on (30 years) Matthew and Luke write their Gospels using Mark - Matthew uses nearly all of Mark - Luke doesn't have as much as Mark as Matthew Discuss the Christology of one of the gospels? - The portrait of Jesus in one of the gospels Short answers 1 page Essays 4 pages Do the readings!

ESSAY EXAMPLES ARE WHAT ARE ON THE EXAM!!! PREPARE 1!! What is a gospel? Mark - The Baptism of Jesus Christology Mark What is a gospel? What is meant by Q in synoptic gospel study?
