OFFICE HOURS Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 p.m. Saturday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. (Closed Sundays) THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

First Sunday of Advent - December 3, 2, 2017 2018 Cheers! Happy New Year! A Joyful Advent to all! Today, Sunday, December 2, 2018, is the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year. For many, this is their most special season: a time of giving to others -- especially to those in need, gathering with family, sharing holiday traditions, Christmas caroling, decorating homes (inside and out), enjoying good food and drink, going to festive parties, sending and receiving Christmas cards and greetings, traveling to be with family and friends, taking our children and grandchildren to see Santa Claus, welcoming those who come to visit, shopping, wrapping, sending and exchanging gifts, lighting Advent wreath candles, driving around to see all the home and business decorations -- with lights and reindeer, Santa Clauses and manger scenes, and attending church together! This year s Advent is very special for us here at Holy Spirit: our FIRST Advent in the new church, and, of course, our FIRST Christmas! Our environment volunteers have been planning and working to make our worship space beautiful and inspirational. Here are a few upcoming Advent activities: Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. If you re interested in joining to be a part of the fun, please reach out to Kristal Urso k.castillourso@icloud.com or come to our next meeting on Wednesday, December 5th from 7:15-8:15pm in the Parish Life Center. The beginning of our first-ever Adult Education Series: please see information on page 5. This series will meet on the first three Mondays of December (3, 10 & 17, but not, of course, on December 24 or 31). Feast of the Immaculate Conception - a holy day: Masses : on the Eve of the holy day, that is, Friday, December 7, at 6:00 p.m. and on the holy day itself, Saturday, December 8, at 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon. (Note, the 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, is NOT that of the holy day, but of the Second Sunday of Advent.) Advent Retreat, Saturday, December 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m., presented by Sr. Karen and Deacon Dan. Advent Reconciliation Service on Thursday, December 13, at 6:00 p.m. with several priests on hand for the individual hearing of confessions. Children s Christmas Pageant and Party at 6:00 p.m. There will be more details to follow in future bulletins. The Longest Night on December 18, at 7:00 p.m. -- a prayer service to remember our loved ones who have died. Page 4 Happy Advent! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Art in Spirit Day. All ornaments will be available for pickup the weekend of Dec. 15th & 16th.

Holy Spirit New Beginnings ministry invites you to a Longest Night prayer service, 2018 HOLY SPIRIT ANGEL TREE GIFTS ARE DUE BACK NO LATER THAN NEXT SUNDAY DECEMBER 9TH! Please remember to return angel ornament on gift! as a way to honor and remember your deceased loved one and to offer hope and light to you. The end of December marks the longest night of the year. As you grieve the death of a loved one you may find parties and cheerfulness painful. The long, cold and dark evenings seem especially challenging to muddle through. It is often a struggle to find light and hope in the midst of the darkness. Together, we will find THE LIGHT in the darkness.
