He is always willing to respond to pastoral and sacramental needs.

Father Richard writes: Thank you for two recent events. The Los Balcones concert on Friday 23 rd December raised 87.60 and the Lago Jardín Christmass Quiz raised 191 for Chaplaincy funds. Thank you to all who worked to get these events off the ground and thank you for your support for them two very enjoyable occasions. The season of Advent is a most striking time of the year as the dignified liturgical colour of purple contrasts with red and gold of the secular world. As Christians we are called to make the Advent message known, a message of hope and expectation which will be fulfilled when Christ the Lord comes again in great glory to judge the quick and the dead as the Prayer Book says. Advent can be so easily lost in a world of pre-christmass celebrations. The Advent cry is a pleading Come. But not a languid pleading. Rather it is an urgent pleading. O come quickly! says the hymn Lo! he comes with clouds descending. Lawrence Tuttiet s hymn (in the New English Hymnal) cries out eight times in its four verses: O quickly come. There is a sense of urgency each Advent in the prayer of the Church. Yes, we want the Lord to return! It will be the completion of everything for which we have been striving since He came among us in his first coming. The challenge of Advent is to each and everyone of us: When the Lord comes again, will he find us watching and waiting? Or will we be so concerned with ourselves that the desire for him to quickly come may be lessened in us? Might we even miss him? This week the Chaplaincy has a number of carol services and I hope and pray particularly for those who might only be exposed to the Christian understanding of Christmass only once this year that these services may be a time of praise and blessing celebrating the birth of the long desired of all the earth. However, it is not Christmass. Christmass only begins when we come to the altar, beginning on Christmass Eve, for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist whereby the Lord of the stable of Bethlehem is received in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. This and only then is Christmass. Only this can fulfil our deepest longings and hope of which we have given voice during the weeks of Advent. May John the Baptist s voice, a voice that cries still in the wilderness of this passing world, give voice to our Advent desire to prepare the way for the Lord. I urge you to use these Advent days to prepare your hearts, mind and lives for his coming yes, his coming in human flesh but also his coming again in glory and majesty. For this is our Advent longing. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, exemplar of faith, be our model this Advent. She waited upon the Lord and sang his praises for the great things he had done. Mary, chosen, prepared, honoured by the Lord to be the fitting vessel by which the Incarnation could take place is our model of faith. How can this be? she says. Yes, Mary, how can it be? But let us rejoice that it was, through you, whom all generations call blessed, that our salvation was begun. Hail Mary, full of grace! May God bless you all in these Advent days. Father Richard
