Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2

GATHERING SONG Dearest Jesus, at Your Word ELW 520 3

GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray O Almighty and most Merciful God, through your bountiful goodness, keep us from all things that may hurt us, that we, being ready both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things that you would have us do. Grant this, we pray, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING Amos 6:1-7 1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes! 2 Pass over to Calneh, and see, and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory, 3 O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence? 4 Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, 5 who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, 6 who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! 7 Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile, and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 146 1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 2 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, for there is no help in them. 3 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish. 4

4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! whose hope is in the Lord their God; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps his promise forever; 6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. 7 The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; 8 The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. 9 The Lord shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! SECOND READING 1 Timothy 3:1-13 1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31 The holy gospel according to St Luke, the 16 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Following the reading The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Pastor Brian Pederson HYMN OF THE DAY My Life Flows On in Endless Song ELW 763 6

APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray to the Lord, whose steadfast love will comfort us according to His promises. Brief silence Almighty God, preserve us from the temptation of complacency, lest we confuse Your undeserved mercy with sinful self-righteousness and replace repentance with revelry. Give to us penitent hearts that acknowledge our utter sinfulness and rejoice in Your unmerited grace, that we might abandon all trust in ourselves and render all glory to Your Son, crucified and risen for us. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. 7

O Lord of hosts, as we wrestle against not just flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil, You send forth Your angels to protect and preserve us. Watch over those who are under spiritual assault, clothe them in Christ s righteousness and remind them that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Receive our thanks for Your angelic provision, and continue to set Your guardian angels over us that the evil foe may have no power over us, until the eternal day when evil is no more and with the angels we behold Your face in heaven. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O Lord, You open the eyes of the blind and lift up those who are bowed down. Hear our prayers on behalf of those in need of Your mercy especially those we name now, either out loud, or silently in our hearts (pause for spoken and silent prayers.). Provide restoration and deliverance according to Your good and gracious will, and in the time of affliction that is given to them, strengthen their faith that they might cling to Your promises and praise Your name. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Father in heaven, You sent Your Son who, for our sake, became poor with our debt of sin so that we by His poverty might be rich in holiness and grace. As You have so enriched us, enlighten our eyes to see those in poverty around us, and grant that our faith might be evident in love toward those in need. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O Lord, as You once gave Moses and the prophets so that people might hear Your Word, continue to provide pastors and other laborers to make Your Gospel known among the nations. Preserve those who currently serve within Your Church, and raise up more workers to labor in the harvest. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Almighty God, You have rescued us from our sin, and now You feed us sumptuously with Your Son s body and blood. Grant that all who receive this Holy Supper today be preserved from hard-heartedness, clothed in Christ s righteousness and comforted by Your gifts of life and salvation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. 8

Heavenly Father, we praise Your name for Your faithfulness to Abraham, Lazarus and to all the saints who have gone before us. Enliven us by Your Word and Sacraments, that, convinced of Jesus death and resurrection, we may eagerly await the day of our resurrection for His sake; through Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING The offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. If you are visiting with us, please feel free to pass the offering plate, you are our guest. OFFERTORY Doxology BH 253 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heav'nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. A-men. OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. We offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy (pastor continues, concluding with), we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 9

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY WORDS OF INSTITUTION LORD'S PRAYER (SUNG) Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION: is open to all. We believe and teach that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine/juice, which are his body and blood.
