RESPECT LIFE APOSTOLATE EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On Cross Jesus said I thirst. From the Blessed Sacrament Jesus continues to say to each of us I thirst. He thirsts for our personal love, our intimacy, our union with Him in the Blessed Sacrament." Mother Teresa The hours needed to be filled are Tuesday 1am & 2am & 10pm, and Friday 2pm. Please call Jennifer @ 636-940-9858 or Jan @ 636-947-4654 if you would like to become an adorer. Thank you! 2018 Giving Tree In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly built, millions embraced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities 2018-19 Respect Life Reflection, www.usccb.org/respect-life-reflection A Giving Tree Clarification This year you will find some school supply items on the Giving Tree. These items will help our sister parish school children to have the supplies they need in order to do their school work. Please consider taking these much-needed items from the tree and help Our Lady of Guadalupe children see Christ in the Face of Others. Thank you! Can you believe it is time for the Giving Tree to be in our Gathering Space? The tree will be loaded with ornaments for the Thanksgiving Day mass and every day thereafter until Dec. 16. We will have ornaments for Birthright, St. Cletus and Our Lady of Guadalupe. So please enjoy the gift of giving to someone who needs a little help for Christmas. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP YOUR GIFT. All gifts need to be in the Gathering Space by 1:30 on Dec. 16. Questions or comments, please call Bev Frein 314-591-1774 or Jennifer Iffrig 314-322-4173. In today s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to Prepare the way of the Lord, and this is what Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (636-255-1250) so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas.

Though we are now firmly in the Season of Advent, I thought I d share this info with you: THE COLORS OF ADVENT: Purple is usually the primary color associated with Advent because it has historically been the color of royalty and has also been know to reflect penitence and fasting. However, over the years, many different churches have begun using colors other than purple for this holiday. Some churches now use rose or pink colors to represent the joy of the birth of Christ. Other churches may use the color blue to distinguish this liturgical season from Lent. The First Sunday of Advent The First Sunday of Advent is particularly important during the Advent Season and many special activities are launched on this day. Advent calendars may be given on this day. Advent calendars are calendars which count the day to Christmas. Usually, these calendars feature a design where each day, or each Sunday, can be opened, after that day has passed, revealing a toy, chocolate or another treat. This makes it fun for the children to observe the Advent Season. On this day, some people may also light the first candle on their Advent Wreath. This candle symbolizes Hope. The Second Sunday of Advent On the Second Sunday of Advent, the first and second candle is lit and this second candle represents Peace. It also symbolizes all of the preparations that had to be made in order to receive and take care of the Christ child. On this day, Bible readings that relate to Christ and his manger are read. The Third Sunday of Advent The Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday, calls for the lighting of the first two candles, as well as the third candle of the Advent Wreath. The candle is known as Joy. On this day, rose-colored vestments are usually worn and the Bible passages read all relate to St. John the Baptist. The Fourth Sunday of Advent All of the candles are lit on the fourth Sunday. The candle representing this day symbolizes Love. All of the readings on this day pertain to the annunciation of Christ s birth. When the Advent Wreath has a fifth candle, a candle also known as the Christ Candle, it is lit during the Christmas Eve service. A LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP ON THE TOPIC OF RACISM: On October 31, Archbishop Carlson wrote a letter to the priests of our archdiocese on this topic. This letter followed his addressing this same matter with those priests in attendance at the Archdiocesan Priests Convocation in the early October. What you will find below is part of that letter particularly as it applies to our current liturgical season of Advent: Dear Brother Priests, As you know, I have spoken many times on our need to pursue racial reconciliation and justice. I would like to offer the following resources to assist you in your efforts in your parish and community as you embark upon this very important work. During the season of Advent, I am asking all Catholics in the archdiocese to attend Mass at a parish whose demographics are different from their home parish. We celebrate Mass in 7 different languages every week in this archdiocese. We have rural and inner city parishes of a few hundred parishioners and suburban parishes of a few thousand. We celebrate Mass in neighborhoods where the average household income is below the poverty line and also in neighborhoods where the 1% live. We are indeed a diverse archdiocese in many aspects, and I hope that, by encouraging our flock to attend Mass at a parish different from their own, it will promote understanding of our different economic, racial and cultural backgrounds, and remind us that we are all one through the Body of Christ. Mass schedules for every parish are available on the archdiocesan website including a filter you can use to find Masses held in a particular language. I will keep you in my prayers as you join me in this important work of our Church. I would ask that we try to act on the Archbishop s suggestion to attend Mass at a parish whose demographics are different from their home parish this Advent. Please note the invitation elsewhere in this bulletin from our sister-parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, to participate in their celebration of the feast of their namesake this coming Wednesday, December 12. In fact, our second, fourth, and seventh grades along with me will be participating in the 9:00 AM Mass in English there at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Please join us if you can. But you don t have to go that far in order to celebrate that feast and to attend Mass at a parish whose demographics are different from their home parish. All you need to do is to attend that same feast at our neighboring parish St. Charles Borromeo. Their Hispanic community s celebration of this same feast will be at 6:15 PM on December 12 with a fiesta afterward in their gym. While mostly in Spanish, the gospel and homily will be bilingual, and we are welcome to join them. Even if you will not be able to participate in either of these parishes Guadalupe festivities, please consider going to one of their weekend Masses this Advent. Again the Archbishop says above, I hope that, by encouraging our flock to attend Mass at a parish different from their own, it will promote understanding of our different economic, racial and cultural backgrounds, and remind us that we are all one through the Body of Christ. In this way, we can begin to build the bridges that must be there for us to be the one Body of Christ despite the cultural and demographic and language hurdles that challenge that unity.

THE YOUNG CATHOLIC MUSICIANS, now in its 45th year of service to the Church, is searching for string players (violin, viola, cello, bass [or electric bass]) to play in the orchaestra. The young musicians, age 12-17, lead the music for Mass at a different parish once a month and perform two concerts each year. Rehearsals are twice a month. OUR SISTER PARISH OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Many of you may not know that St. Cletus has a sister parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, in near-by Ferguson, that is predominantly Hispanic and African-American. We have developed a close relationship with OLG since 2016 at both the parish and school levels, and our two Parish Councils have planned a variety of activities for the rest of this year and 2019. The most recent was a successful fundraiser for our two schools at El Agave restaurant in October. Coming up is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 11 & 12. The Vigil begins at 10:00 pm on Dec. 11 and concludes with a 9:00 am Mass and brunch on the 12 th. The 2 nd, 4 th and 7 th grades from St. Cletus school will attend the 9:00 am Mass and Fr. Benz will be a concelebrant. Please plan to join us in supporting our sister parish on this feast day and throughout the coming year.
