From the Pastor Holy Week Worship and Activities Palm Sunday Worship, March 29, 9:00 a.m. I AM This Lenten Season will focus on the I AM sayings found in the Gospel of John. Our worship and all of our Sunday School classes will be focused on The God We Can Know, a book by Rob Fuquay. As I have been doing some planning, I have been pondering my own I am sayings. I am a mother. I am a sister. I am a pastor. I am a woman. I am a friend. I am an introvert. While all of these are true, the most important I am is that I am a beloved child of God. It is super easy to focus on all the who we are pieces of our life and forget whose we are. If we don t remember that we are made in God s image, we are free to think all kinds of bad things about ourselves and others. We can become judgmental. We can begin to think that we are the ones to sort out the sheep and the goats, the wheat and the chaff. We can think that we are entitled to privileges we have not earned. Throughout Lent, we will come to understand more about the nature of the person of Jesus and also understand more about ourselves in relationship to Jesus. Knowing Jesus will help us to know ourselves. We will recognize God in ourselves and in one another. Hopefully, we will recognize God s grace and mercy in the person of Jesus. As we listen and learn from Jesus, my prayer is that we will each come to know that we are all beloved children of God, made in God s own image, made to seek God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength. May our Lenten journey together be filled with peace and joy and new understanding. Many blessings, Pastor Jane Lenten Devotionals Free lenten Devotionals are available in the Narthex. Please choose a book for yourself and one or more to share with others that might enjoy a devotional guide during this season of Lent. Lord, Is It I, A Living Last Supper, March 31 and April 2, 6:30 p.m. Passover Seder, April 3, 6:00 p.m. Easter! April 5, Worship Sunrise, 9:00, and 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, 6:00 p.m. Passover Seder at LUMC Please Sign Up in the Narthex by March 15 For the past 2 years we have celebrated this family tradition here in our Fellowship Hall. It is a wonderful opportunity to gather and hear the story of the Exodus and enjoy a special dinner and fellowship. Passover or Pesach (PAY-sahk) comes from a Hebrew word meaning to pass through, to pass over, to exempt, or to spare. It refers to the fact that God passed over the houses of the Jews when he was slaying the firstborn of Egypt. Passover was one of the most important holidays that Jesus would have celebrated during his lifetime. Many believe that the Last Supper was a Passover Seder. A Passover Seder or order is a special family meal filled with ritual to remind us that God delivered his people out of slavery and brought them to the Promised Land. The text of the Pesach seder is written in a book called the haggadah. The haggadah tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt and explains some of the practices and symbols of the holiday. All are welcome. Those that are comfortable doing so are asked for a $10 donation per person to cover the cost of the meal. But no one should stay away. Your presence is needed more than your presents. Due to the preparation time and expense involved, we are asking that interested folks please sign up by March 15 so that we can plan accordingly. This year s Vacation Bible School theme will be G-Force: God s Love In Action! So Save the Date for July 13-17! Our next planning meeting is March 16 at 6:30 p.m., so roll on down to help get this thing going! The God We Can Know: Exploring the I AM Sayings of Jesus This Church-wide study continues in March, exploring the I Am sayings of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. What did Jesus mean when he said, I am the Bread of Life; the Light of the World; the Good Shepherd; the True Vine; the Way, the Truth and the Life; the Resurrection, and the Life? One by one, Jesus statements grab our imagination, reveal more about his identity and purpose, and connect us to the God of Moses, who spoke the first I Am. These significant, yet ordinary images give us insightful ways to experience Jesus and point us to a God who wants to be known. Each Sunday, adults, youth and children will gather in the Sanctuary to view a ten-minute video filmed on location in the Holy Land with Pastor Rob Fuquay, and actually see the places where Jesus stood while disclosing his true identity, and in what context he spoke each I Am. Then we ll split into individual classes. This all generation Sunday School program promises to make for some thoughtful and engaging conversation during Fellowship and beyond!
