WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL 2415 Silas Creek Parkway Winston-Salem, NC 27103 336-725-1651 www.stjohnsws.com FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT February 18, 2018 10:45 a.m. Worship with Holy Communion St. John s Mission: To help one more person get to Heaven by pointing them to Jesus Christ.

Prelude Three Reflections on Southwell David Lasky Choral Call to Worship The Lone Wild Bird traditional American Welcome & Sharing of the Peace We take a moment to greet one another, as brothers and sisters in Christ (often with the words God s peace be with you ). We enjoy this part of our worship; however, you are free to participate, or not, in any manner with which you are comfortable. (Please Remain Standing) If at any point you need to or prefer to sit, please feel free to do so (Please Rise) Processional Hymn: #527 O Savior Precious Savior Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Kyrie

(Please be seated) First Lesson: Isaiah 1:11-18 11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me? Says the Lord. I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats. 12 When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from your hand, To trample My courts? 13 Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. 14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them.

15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. 16 Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; [a] Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, Says the Lord, Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. L: This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God Second Lesson: Romans 3:20-24, 28 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all [a] who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please Stand)

Holy Gospel Matthew 23:13-15, 27-28, 23-24 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 23 rd chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. [a] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men s bones and all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (Be Seated) Children s Message Hymn of the Day: #567 Not What These Hands Have Done Sermon: Gnat Strainers and Camel Swallowers

Apostles' Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Offer Unto the Lord! The Bible gives these guidelines on our financial giving: 1) First Fruits : i.e. Set aside a portion for God FIRST. He gets the best, not the leftovers. 2) Portion/Percentage giving : Give to God a percentage of our gross income; the Old Testament tithe was 10%; certainly this side of the cross we should be just as motivated, or more so, than the Old Testament believers! 3) God s Blessings : God promises if we are faithful in our giving, He will pour out blessing/abundance to us overflowing! Offering Please take this time to sign the Pew Pads in your row and pass them down. We thank God for our visitors and guests. Please share your e-mail with us so that you can receive a weekly note of activities/announcements. Thank you for worshiping with us! Offertory Anthem Be Near Me, Lord K. Lee Scott (Please Stand) Offertory Hymn #805 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE LORD'S SUPPER. St. Paul wrote, "Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup". Ask yourself: Am I sorry for my sins? Do I believe that Jesus died for my sins? Am I resolved, by the work of the Holy Spirit, to use the power of Christ which is offered in this Sacrament, to amend my sinful life? St. Paul also wrote, "He who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he does not judge the body rightly". Do you believe that you receive the TRUE/REAL BODY AND BLOOD of Christ in, under and with the bread and wine for the full pardon of sins? (Please use pages 329-330 in the front of your hymn book to examine yourself.) Children are invited forward to receive a blessing. Please take a moment to sign the attendance pad in your pew.
