S P I R I T UA L R E A D I N G & R E F L E C T I O N NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING SAINT OF THE WEEK JANUARY 25 CONVERSION OF PAUL, APOSTLE FOR LOVE OF CHRIST, PAUL BORE EVERY BURDEN MATTHEW 4:12-23 W hen Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him. He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! Paul, more than anyone else, has shown us what man really is, and in what our nobility consists, and of what virtue this particular animal is capable. Each day he aimed ever higher; each day he rose up with greater ardour and faced with new eagerness the dangers that threatened him. He summed up his attitude in the words: I forget what is behind me and push on to what lies ahead. When he saw death imminent, he bade others share his joy: Rejoice and be glad with me! And when danger, injustice and abuse threatened, he said: I am content with weakness, mistreatment and persecution. These he called the weapons of righteousness, thus telling us that he derived immense profit from them. Thus, amid the traps set for him by his enemies, with exultant heart he turned their every attack into a victory for himself; constantly beaten, abused and cursed, he boasted of it as though he were celebrating a triumphal procession and taking trophies home, and offered thanks to God for it all: Thanks be to God who is always victorious in us! This is why he was far more eager for the shameful abuse that his zeal in preaching brought upon him than we are for the most pleasing honours, more eager for death than we are for life, for poverty than we are for wealth; he yearned for toil far more than others yearn for rest after toil. The one thing he feared, indeed dreaded, was to offend God; nothing else could sway him. Therefore, the only thing he really wanted was always to please God. The most important thing of all to him, however, was that he knew himself to be loved by Christ. Enjoying this love, he considered himself happier than anyone else; were he without it, it would be no satisfaction to be the friend of principalities and powers. He preferred to be thus loved and be the least of all, or even to be among the damned, than to be without that love and be among the great and honoured. To be separated from that love was, in his eyes, the greatest and most extraordinary of torments; the pain of that loss would alone have been hell, and endless, unbearable torture. So too, in being loved by Christ he thought of himself as possessing life, the world, the angels, present and future, the kingdom, the promise and countless blessings. Apart from that love nothing saddened or delighted him; for nothing earthly did he regard as bitter or sweet. Paul set no store by the things that fill our visible world, any more than a man sets value on the withered grass of the field. As for tyrannical rulers or the people enraged against him, he paid them no more heed than gnats. Death itself and pain and whatever torments might come were but child s play to him, provided that thereby he might bear some burden for the sake of Christ. From The Office of Readings PAGE 2

Wade Supreme Court Decision that made abortion legal. Members of St John s Youth Group, along with several adults of our parish, will be traveling with St. Barnabas Catholic Church to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., January 21st through the 23rd. We ask you to PRAY for our youth, parishioners, Fr. Eckert and all those who will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life. Please remember to PRAY in a special way for the unborn, for the healing of those who have suffered from the trauma of abortion, and for all people to come to know and respect the dignity of each and every human life. The right to life is the first among human rights. Pope Francis PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN We proclaim Christ to the world around us by our efforts to provide a safe environment for all people, especially the young and the vulnerable. In 2002, the Bishops of the United States issued the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The charter addresses the Church s commitment to respond effectively, appropriately and compassionately to cases of abuse of minors by priest, deacons or other church personnel. DIOCESAN REQUIREMENTS FOR REPORTING MINISTRY-RELATED SEXUAL ABUSE OF A MINOR Any individual having actual knowledge of or reasonable cause to suspect an incident of ministry-related sexual abuse is to immediately report the incident to the Chancery. The Chancery will then report the incident to the proper civil authorities. The individual reporting the incident to the Chancery will be notified of the particulars regarding the Chancery s filing of the incident with civil authorities. This reporting requirement is not intended to supersede the right of an individual to make a report to civil authorities, but is to ensure proper, complete and timely reporting. Should an individual choose to make a report to civil authorities, a report is still to be made to the Chancery. Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. The Youth will be donating ALL FUNDS to TBOM s Feed a Kid program serving Polk County children at risk of hunger since 2008. We thank you" for your consideration and kindness. This collection simply asks for your change, a dollar or two it is not intended to compete with nor replace the regular Food Bank collection for Outreach Ministry.
