2014 Highlights of Our Life The Reverend Andrew Vn Culin, Rector Der People of Christ Church nd Our Friends, Wht s your thing? We ll hve something, perhps even two things tht re ours; tht thing tht we stnd for, tht thing tht drives us or focuses our hert nd our mind. Innovtion, efficiency, beuty, rt nd cretivity, completion, or success (however you define it); nd the list goes on nd on. And while we might like ny number of these things, t the end of the dy only one or two will relly, truly, drw us in nd drive us onwrd. This question ought to be sked of ny community s well. Wht is our thing? Why re we here? Wht drws us in nd gthers us together? It is esy, of course, when we sk such questions to get distrcted by ll the ctivity of life, ll the things tht we do, s if the ctivity itself is the purpose nd the end. We know, of course, tht this is not so; ctivity does not equl purpose, but the dnger of their confusion is there ll the sme. This is especilly true when we undertke such things s n nnul report. It s esy in the pges tht follow to cpture wht we hve done, nd to tell of ll the ctivities tht hve demnded our time nd ttention, but tht ought not suffice. Through it ll we must keep our eye on the purpose of it ll, wht it is tht hs drwn us in nd gthered us together. And so, with bit of trepidtion, it gives me gret plesure to present the 2014 Christ Church A. The pges tht follow will ttempt to cpture not only the myrid of ctivities nd ministries tht we conduct s Christin community, but the myrid wys tht we strive together to provide to visitors nd old friends like, trnsforming encounter with God, for tht is our one thing to bring God nd people together. And so s we begin new yer in ministry here in Grosse Pointe, I will continue my pryer for you tht your life my continue to be shped nd trnsformed by your encounter with God here, within these wlls nd within the embrce of this community of fith, t Christ Church Grosse Pointe. With ffection nd every blessing, The Rev d Andrew Vn Culin, Rector Annul Meeting 2015 4

2014 Senior Wrden Mry Trost Der Friends, The yer 2014 hs been whirlwind of chnge nd refocus s we moved forwrd in our first full yer guided by the ledership of our tenth Rector, Drew. We ve experienced chllenges; events nd opportunities were not lwys wht they hd been in yers pst. There were disppointments for some when certin expecttions, whether voiced or ssumed, were not met with the speed desired or outcome nticipted. However, we lso completed some mjor tsks nd continue with others tht better position us for our future growth. These ccomplishments need to be celebrted nd we need to mintin our drive to move forwrd. In fll of 2013 the Vestry pproved the 2014 Resource Pln with fundmentl gol to support the growth of stff to develop nd led ministry nd mngement. To produce the exceptionl progrmming nd dministrtion expected nd deserved by this prish, we needed to ttrct, identify nd hire tlented individuls. A creful nd deliberte process resulted in the ddition of committed individuls including Jmes Gry (Worship Coordintor), Christin Hnsen (Child, Youth nd Fmily Formtion), Tripp Kennedy (Assistnt Orgnist), Dine Wrd (Finnce nd Administrtion), nd Lynne Wyne (Communictions). To support our expnded worship life nd pstorl cre, we lso welcomed the Rev. Robert Hrt s Assisting nd Interim Associte Priest. Efforts continued in the fll with the work to ttrct vibrnt Curte nd Associte Priest. And even throughout the busy Advent nd Christms seson, the serch is ongoing to identify new Fcilities Director fter the retirement of our beloved Michel Fournier. In prllel with the expnsion of our stff, the Buildings nd Grounds group, Vestry, nd prish ddressed our clergy housing position. Recognizing the extent of repirs nd improvements needed to our prsonge on Grnd Mris nd the current mrket conditions, we moved forwrd with the preprtions of Grnd Mris for sle. At the sme time we locted new prsonge opportunity on Neff Rod in Grosse Pointe City. The resounding pprovl by the prish t our Specil Prish Meeting in June confirmed the excitement nd vision of the prish to be redy to use clergy housing to further our ministry. By July 31, we successfully closed both trnsctions nd egerly looked forwrd to using the Rdnor Circle nd Neff Rod properties in new nd cretive wys. Guided by the unflgging energy of our Tresurer Lynne Cmeron, the business office successfully negotited the chnge to new chrt of ccounts nd the completion of n officil udit for 2012 nd review for 2013. We re now using new coordinted ccounting system, blnce sheet, nd budgetry process tht reflect ll fiscl business of the church. The work by Lynne, the Finnce group led by Butch Wrdwell, Drew, nd now Dine ws exemplry nd their dediction to this grueling tsk will serve us well in the yers to come. Our Formtion life continues to grow. Building on the firm foundtion of the countless volunteers led by Trcey Torosin nd Nncy Osborn through August, Christin Hnsen hs re-energized our Child, 5 Annul Meeting 2015 We must never forget tht our pssions come from our collective desire to do good, to live into the chllenges of being humn nd yet strive to be better.

Youth nd Fmily Ministries. We ll continue to smile s we wtch the growing numbers of children excitedly tril fter Christin for Gospel redings, Children s Chpel, Sundy School, youth events, mission trip plnning, fmily events, nd more. The hunger for youth nd dult Confirmtion is being fed with full yer of clsses to foster fith development under the guidnce of Christin, Fr. Bob nd Fr. Drew. Our Rector s Forums hve now developed into fuller schedule of Sundy events including those specific to the study of liturgy, n pprecition for our Detroit community, nd the joys of fellowship. We cme together in incresing numbers for the hllmrks of our Christin yer- Holy Week, Ester, Pentecost, Advent nd Christms. Our Christms Lessons nd Crols service ws overflowing with congregnts nd visitors joined together in nticiption of Christms joy. We cme together on Wednesdy evenings in fellowship, n intergenertionl mix filled with lughter, full bellies, nd sense of fun before we moved off to our individul ctivities. We cme together to shre our love of music, be it in worship or s our gift to our greter community. We cme together to host our 30th Annul Antiques Show nd our festive Gifts nd Greens, not only showcsing our beutiful prish but lso working together to support ministry beyond our wlls. Throughout October nd November, we engged in helthy discussion nd debte bout the resources needed to sustin our new progrmming, to complete our stffing needs, nd to direct our resources to build our future. The response nd ttendnce t Stewrdship receptions, n opportunity to commune nd re-commit to our shred vision ws hertening. And so t its November meeting, the Vestry dopted bold $2.5 million 2015 Resource Pln which chllenges ll to increse personl pledging nd invests vilble funds to meet our gols. We re responding. The 2014 fiscl yer ended with pledged support greter thn wht ws reflected in the 2014 Resource Pln. And the erly response to our 2015 gols is one of incresed individul commitment with n verge increse of lmost $300 per pledge. Our work hs not been without chllenges, moments of doubt, nd difference of opinion nd it will continue to be so. But those opportunities hve been nd will be driven by our shred sense of love for Christ Church. We must never forget tht our pssions come from our collective desire to do good, to live into the chllenges of being humn nd yet strive to be better. Now more thn ever I remin grteful for the devotion nd courge of so mny to join together to move hed, be they our Rector Drew, every member of the Vestry, our countless volunteers, or the individuls in communl pryer in worship. And I egerly look forwrd to our shred experiences s we grow in our reltionship with God nd one with nother. Yours in love nd fith, Mry Trost Annul Meeting 2015 6

2014 Junior Wrden John Snyder The Junior Wrden t Christ Church hs typiclly overseen nd worked with the Prish Resources Committees, tht is, Buildings nd Grounds, Finnce, Investment, nd Stewrdship. He/she works closely with the Senior Wrden nd of course the Rector. The burden of this office hs been considerbly lightened with the very cpble ledership of our Senior Wrden for the pst yer, Mry Trost, nd nturlly our energetic nd visionry Rector. We three meet weekly to discuss the detils of dily prish life, to pln the monthly Vestry meetings, nd to encourge involvement of ech Vestry member nd mny in the congregtion into the life of this gret prish. The seculr spects of the life of Christ Church re in good hnds with the ble stff support Fr. Drew hs hired in the Director of Prish Resources, Dine Wrd. She hs mde my job, nd tht of mny on the Vestry, one of oversight nd dvice rther thn hnds on mngement. The Finnce Committee s work on the Resource Pln (red Budget) hs been one of review without nit-picking ech nd every line of the Pln. While it hs tken longer thn we nticipted to hve ll of the personnel in plce, now tht they re here, we re now blessed with very cpble ledership nd support to the Rector, nd Fr. Drew knows this, llowing him to do the work he ws clled to do crry out the Vision for Christ Church in very creful, plnned wy. We hve begun policy review guiding the Prish in its budgeting nd investment ctivities for the Endowment nd the Reserve Funds. We hve much clerer picture of the finncil stte of the Prish, nd the stte we re in. We re in good stte, buttressed by very positive investment performnce in our Endowment nd Resource ssets. Our Tresurer will report seprtely on the numbers, but they re very positive nd reflect growing support from the Congregtion t lrge. The rel estte issues the Church delt with this pst yer hve us in very good position for the future. We nticipte being better stewrds of our rel nd tngible ssets, so tht the clergy occupying the properties cn be proud of their own situtions. The Junior Wrden ttended, with others, the nnul Diocesn Convention held in lte October. While the Convention ws conventionl to my mind, there ws one significnt resolution voted upon, tht being Resolution 7 Solutions to Gun Violence, submitted by the CCGP Tsk Force on Gun Violence. An rticle bout the Resolution ppered in the Detroit Free Press on Mondy, November 3, which this Wrden felt ws little drmtic nd not relly ccurte reporting. (See the online rticle t: http://www.freep.com/ story/news/locl/2014/11/03/episcopl-church-michigngun-resolution/18382335/) It ws gret to hve our Tsk Force represented there. The Junior Wrden hs been ble to bring concerns conveyed to him by members of the congregtions to the Rector nd stff. And he hs helped verblize nd put into prctice the vision for Christ Church. Hving been t mny of the myrid services offered t Christ Church, both trditionl (Sturdy/ Sundy) nd new (weekdy) s well s the memoril services (funerls nd bptisms), I find tht they spek to the spiritul needs of the prticipnts, the congregtion nd the formtion desires of us ll. I hve been fed emotionlly nd physiclly with ech pryer, ech euchrist, ech reflection our clergy stff offer. When I ccepted the Vestry s cll nd nomintion to serve s Junior Wrden, it hd been with some trepidtion. I needn t hve fered, but rther rejoice nd continue to do so in this work nd in the opportunity nd privilege to serve you, the whole of Christ Church. u 7 Annul Meeting 2015
