The cookies were home cooked amazing and the answers from our kids were even more amazing! Smart, smart kids here at St. Bernard across the board. Many of you stopped at the table after Mass and were able to ask questions about just what makes a classical school classical. I was very thankful for the presence of their principal, Mr. Frank Nicely, at both Masses to answer questions and provide information. Our GRACE schools provide a lot of options to help parents form their children in their Faith and to help them become all God calls them to be. So just what is a classical school? One of our parents commented that a classical school tries very intentionally to root every subject somehow back to the love of God and his love for us. Not bad. Here is some information provided from our GRACE website on a classical curriculum: Trivium A Classical Curriculum is implemented in three stages: the Grammar Stage, the Logic Stage, and the Rhetoric Stage. Each stage utilizes the child s natural tendencies and affinities for learning, complementing the development of the child s brain. This educational method integrates all subjects with Catholic values, resulting in faithfilled students who are knowledgeable, analytical and articulate. Through the Trivium educational approach, we strive to incorporate Catholicism in all aspects of learning. Grammar Stage (Pre-Kindergarten-5th Grade) Grammar, the first stage, emphasizes the mastery of the basics. Before a child can become fluent in any one subject, he or she must learn its most basic elements. During this stage, ages 5-11, children possess a natural affinity for storing information on any subject and recalling it at will. Here, children desire to answer the question, what? Indeed, children at this stage are little sponges who love to mimic, sing, and memorize! Therefore, young children in the grammar stage memorize, recite, and repeat basic knowledge: the letters of the alphabet, nursery rhymes, math facts (1+1; 2 5; etc), Latin endings, history facts, and, most importantly, phonetics. The grammar stage lays the foundations for future critical thinking when the mind and spirit mature. Logic Stage (6th-8th Grade) The next stage, logic, means reason. In this stage, ages 12-14/15, children are taught to reason by continued exercises in argumentation. This flows naturally from the child s tendency to question the information they are given. Children desire to answer the question, why? Lessons in Formal Logic begin at this stage. Continued...

December 8 & 9, 2018 PAGE 3 Rhetoric Stage (9th-12th Grade) Lastly, the rhetoric stage focuses on persuasion or the communication of rational thought. By now, a student s cognitive abilities should have come into their full flower of maturity. This means that a student should be able to read, learn, think, and communicate independently. It is during this stage that emphasis is placed on the art of communicating beautifully through both the spoken and written word in defense of the Truth that they now possess. If you would like more information, simply go to our GRACE website and find the link for St. John Paul II Classical School. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg 2ND Sunday of Advent And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value (PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10) Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need. THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the 6th Annual Holiday Extravaganza for 2018!! It was our biggest event we've ever had with nearly 60 vendors and crafters. Many expressed interest to come back again next year. We hear many comments how our event is one of their favorites to shop and be apart of!! We especially appreciate the Event Organizer Marge Biemeret, the Holiday event decorator Cindy Sweeney, Katie Sullivan, Sarah Johanski and Melissa Mercado the Parish and School Office Staff and the many volunteers who assisted.. The help from everyone was very much appreciated!! Thank you to all the 8th grade students and moms and those who made delicious bakery and chili for the 8th grade Bake Shop for the event. The Bake Shop too was a great success. We wish everyone a Safe and Blessed Christmas. See you all next year!! Religious Education News Adam Horn-R.E. Dave, the executive director of EPH, mentioned in an EPH interview, that one teen-age boy shared that he most appreciated a dresser when moving into an EPH home. He had been living out of a suitcase and his clothes would become damp. But with his new dresser, his clothes would remain dry. If anyone has a dresser you would like to donate to the EPH, please contact Sue Mills, 920-634-5133. GRACE 2018-19 Annual Appeal Consider the gift of education in your year-end charitable giving.
