The word comes from the Latin adventus meaning He is coming. The He being of course God in Christ Jesus. There are three ways that we traditionally understand this coming of Christ. There is his past coming in time, his present coming into our lives and his final future coming for each of us individually and for all of us collectively in the end. These comings of Advent provide good prayer fodder for the weeks of Advent. The past coming of Christ is not only his foreshadowing in the Old Testament but also his coming in the womb of Mary at the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel asked Mary if she would consent to receive the Son of God. Mary said yes, thy will be done. The child grew in her womb, was born and walked among us. How familiar am I with the words, actions and teachings of Jesus? If he really is God become man for us, then his words, actions and teachings can teach me much about the assuredly mysterious God. Opening the New Testament, especially the Gospels, is a great way to let God enter our life. It makes the past Christ present to us now. The present coming of Christ is manifest in a variety of ways. He comes through the Church and her sacraments, he comes through souls open to him and his presence in their lives, he comes to us in the disguise of those in need and those who are troublesome, he comes to us in those who are older, younger, the unborn and the suffering. It is not as if these persons ever cease being themselves, but they do bring him hidden within them, in some fashion, often unbeknownst to themselves. The sacraments and the Church bring him to us in a more tangible and yet still mysterious way. Perhaps we could pray for the gift of faith to acknowledge him more deliberately in his many varied presences this Advent. Lastly is his second coming at the end of our life and at the end of time. This truth challenges us to have a real sense of heaven in our life. Not only will there be a reckoning of deeds and a revelation of intent, but also there will be a final healing of love and an addressing of concerns, questions and tears. Perhaps the latter is one of the great consolations of Christmas. In the end all will be well, or better said, all is well, even now, though we still must live many days of tears. How do I pray with that truth? These three comings of Christ are helpful in our Christian prayer and life and this Advent may be a fine time to visit them in prayer. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg Feast of the Immaculate Conception Masses 5:30 pm Vigil Mass Friday Dec. 7 8:45 am Feast Day-Dec. 8

December 1 & 2, 2018 PAGE 3 1st Sunday of Advent But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. (LUKE 21:28) We celebrate Advent each year in preparation of the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await His second coming. In this Adventseason, use the sacrament of Reconciliation to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. It s never too late. My name is Cassian Utrie and it is a blessing to begin serving St. Bernard Parish as its new Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator. My family moved to Appleton when I was 8 and I have been in Catholic education ever since. During my time at Xavier H.S. I played 1 Singles on the varsity tennis team, volunteered as a Catechist, played the trumpet, and found an unyielding enthusiasm for the Church. My most influential teachers were Mary Beth Meehl and Mike Mauthe, who first introduced me to the Pro-Life movement and the intellectual depth of Theology. Following high school I attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., majoring in Philosophy. My goal: become a lawyer and overturn Roe v. Wade, easy. In addition to countless hours in the Mullen Library, I joined the Knights of Columbus, interned on Capitol Hill, and played even more tennis. During my first semester at Marquette Law School, God called me to the priesthood (perfect timing). And so, within a year I went from studying case law to studying God s Law in seminary. It was a beautiful year of service, prayer, wholesome fraternity, and study; fittingly, it revealed that I required a greater zeal for the Mass before I could continue. God is good however, and in the time since I have been able to serve Him and His Church in ways I never expected: as a youth minister, as a tennis pro, and in all the other simple aspect of life. It is a considerable joy to serve St. Bernard parish and be welcomed into its community. I look forward to meeting you all, joining in the life of this church, and walking together towards Christ.
