The Kibbitzer Temple Am Shalom Mentor, Ohio DECEMBER 2018 KISLEV-TEVET 5779 Hello my friends, We ve had a very significant and emotional month. Following last month s Memorial service, which was attended by friends from near and far, we had many people who offered to stand by our side to protect and defend our small, but mighty, congregation. Our church neighbors from Fairport Congregational, St. James Episcopal, Old South UCC and Hope Ridge UMC banded around us offering prayers, Oneg treats, the purchase of a Peace Pole, plus they included us in their Thanksgiving Prayer service. Our pews were overflowing with between 80-100 congregants. I am so thankful for our Am Shalom family and the friends we have made in our Lake County religious community. I feel so blessed and am filled with love and share heart filled thanks to all. Special thanks go out to Andy Kenen for his outreach within the community newspapers. We have been seen in several papers for our Shabbat Services 7:30pm FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21 Sisterhood 10a.m. SATURDAY DECEMBER 8 Manhattan Deli, Mentor Contact Rita Rose at (440) 867-2268 or rrose@oh.rr.com A WORD FROM RENÉE beautiful Memorial service. Thanks to Janet, Pene and Mark for their organization of the Oneg. Kudos to our very own police security, George Evangelista and Gene Fixler for their presence in making people feel safe coming into our Temple building for the last month. You are a blessing! The Temple Board continues to discuss and is developing a plan for extra security measures for our safety. It is truly a shame that we must do this, but it is our intent to keep everyone safe and secure here at Am Shalom. On another note: is quickly approaching. Our Am Shalom party will be on Sunday, December 9, at 5:00 at the Temple. We will be serving brisket, chicken, potato latkes, applesauce, salad, sour cream, and desserts. No need to bring anything, but there will be a charge to cover the food. Adults will cost $18.00 and children under 13 are $13.00. Please call the Temple office by December 3 rd to R.S.V.P. 440-255-1544. I will have SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Men s Fellowship Group 8:00a.m. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16 Mentor Family Restaurant. If anyone can be at Temple early that afternoon, please come help us make latkes. Someone will be there beginning at 2:00 pm to start setting things up, plus the peeling and the making of the potato latkes. Thanks in advance. As we look back on the 2018 year, we can be so thankful that our downstairs is dry and looks amazing and we have done so many amazing things throughout this year. I know 2019 will be just as wonderful, thanks to all of our members. You are a blessing! B ahava, (with love) Renee Board Meeting 7:30pm WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 5 Congregants, get involved! Temple had memorial for those lost in recent tragedies. We were blessed with the support from three different clergy and members from several area churches. It was a great night for coming together for prayer, healing and just being together. Please continue to pray for our Jewish community, all our national leaders, and everyone in EMS (police, fire, and emergency technicians)

I didn t get to win the Apples to Apples game, but Renee did. Mark and I very much enjoy the social events Janet and the Activities Committee plan. THE KIBBITZER NOTE FROM TEMPLE PRESIDENT I m so proud of Temple Am Shalom. On Friday, November 2 our sanctuary was filled with worshipers from four churches and our own congregation. The event was a memorial Shabbat service to honor those affected by the violence earlier in the week. Participants received a special prayer book to remember the evening. Renee and Elise led a moving service that was a tribute to those killed and injured, and introduced our guests to a Shabbat service. Afterward, most stayed to enjoy the hospitality of our Oneg and participated in a serious discussion about how to make our houses of worship more secure. The evening was a success in every way possible. Special thanks to Janet and George Evangelista and Mark and Pene Obenour for all of their work, and of course Renee and Elise. If you missed it, you missed an important milestone in our growth as the little congregation that could. Our service also was noted by three northeast Ohio publications. The Cleveland Jewish News included us in an article where they reported on how the temples in greater Cleveland acknowledged the Pittsburgh shootings. There we were noted alongside some of the biggest temples in our area. We also had stories and pictures in the News-Herald and the Spirit of Bainbridge. Granted they either re-printed or re-wrote the press release I sent them, but we got the newspapers to notice us. For Lake County and Bainbridge, it lets people know that there is a temple serving their communities. Page 4 Finally, all of you should have received a mailing about dues and temple security. It went out right before Thanksgiving. The dues notice was meant to be a clarification about our process. Most of our members are current with their payments and some have been very generous with additional contributions. The temple security is a follow up to the November board meeting. We re asking congregants to help us purchase new, more secure, doors for our front entrance and a security camera system. I hope you ll join me in contributing. Please have a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. I look forward to seeing you at our party Sunday, December 9. I ll be late because I have to do sound and shoot video for the Kenston holiday concerts. Please, save me a latke! Andy (Pride-Optimism-Participation)
