Sunday, June 18, 2017 Second Sunday in Pentecost Holy Communion 9:15 a.m. Welcome to Faith Lutheran Church! We are an intentionally inclusive community proclaiming a warm welcome to people of every race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age and ability into all aspects of our church life. We invite you to participate in our vibrant ministry of worship, education, fellowship and service. Whether you are visiting for the first time or are a member here, it is our privilege to welcome you and to gratefully accept the unique gifts you bring to this day. Come as you are; all are welcome! Faith Lutheran Church + 8208 18th Ave NE + Seattle, WA 98115-4430 www.faithseattle.org

INTRODUCTION TO TODAY S GOSPEL Moses tells the Israelites that they are called to be a priestly kingdom and a holy people. Jesus sends out the disciples as laborers into the harvest. In baptism we too are anointed for ministry, sharing God s compassion with our needy world. From the Lord s table, we go forth to proclaim the good news, to heal the sick, and to share our bread with the hungry. HELPFUL INFORMATION Welcome to worship at Faith Lutheran Church. Everything you need to follow the service is in the bulletin. Hymns can be found in the red hymnal in the pews; the corresponding hymn numbers are in the upper corners of each page. Please take a moment to fill out the information card found in the pew rack. Please place the card in the offering plate so we can be in touch with you. Prayer requests to be offered during worship can be written on the card in the pew rack and passed toward the center aisle where it will be collected by an usher during the first hymn. There are coffee and treats in the Library after the service. We would love to join you in fellowship time together. Restrooms are located on the far side of the Library or down the main stairs. Feel free to explore the building and ask questions of the pastors, ushers, or anyone you see! We encourage you to introduce yourselves and hope you feel comfortable here. Children are welcome and highly encouraged to be in worship. We understand that children have the need to move and make sound. We find this to be a joyful and important part of worship. Blessing Bags are found near both entrances of sanctuary filled with activities for children. A cry room is available at the back of the sanctuary should you need a brief respite. Child care is offered in the nursery downstairs. Please be sure to sign your child in. Children are encouraged to come forward for the children s sermon during worship. If they would then like to go to the nursery, they will then be led downstairs by a child care leader. Faith Lutheran Church is a lively, caring, and energetic community. We are so glad you are here!

KYRIE HYMN OF PRAISE

SALUTATION PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray, God of compassion, you have opened the way for us and brought us to yourself. Pour your love into our hearts, that, overflowing with joy, we may freely share the blessings of your realm and faithfully proclaim the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. CHILDREN S SERMON First Reading: Genesis 18:1-15 [21:1-7] God, in the form of three messengers, announces to Sarah and Abraham that they will have a child. Sarah, because of her advanced age, laughs at this seeming impossibility. But nothing is impossible for God, and in due course Isaac is born (Gen. 21:1-7). Now, Sarah confesses, everyone will share in her joyous laughter. 1 The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. 2 He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. 3 He said, My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on since you have come to your servant. So they said, Do as you have said. 6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes. 7 Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. 8 Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. 9 They said to him, Where is your wife Sarah? And he said, There, in the tent. 10 Then one said, I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure? 13 The Lord said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, and say, Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old? 14 Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son. 15 But Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh ; for she was afraid. He said, Oh yes, you did laugh. [ 1 The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. 2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Now Sarah said, God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me. 7 And she said, Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age. ] R: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Second Reading: Romans 5:1-8 We are no longer God s enemies but have peace with God, because we were brought into a right relationship with God through Christ s death. A tested character has been forged for us which empowers endurance in the midst of suffering and hope for final salvation. 1 Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces

hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. R: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 9th chapter. C: Speak Lord, your servants are listening. Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:35--10:8 The mission of Jesus followers is to continue the mission of Jesus himself. Here, he instructs his first disciples how they might proclaim the gospel through their words and deeds. 35 Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 0:1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, The kingdom of heaven has come near. 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Please be seated. SERMON Please stand as you are able. HYMN OF THE DAY #720 We Are Called AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: APOSTLES CREED P: In response the gospel proclaimed, we confess our faith using the words of the Apostle s Creed: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. INTERCESSORY PRAYERS AND EXCHANGE OF PEACE A: Rejoicing in the risen life of Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. After each petition: A: Lord in your mercy, C: Lord, Listen to your children Praying (below) A: Joining our voices with your faithful ones in every time and place, we offer our prayers in the name of the Risen One, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. Please greet one another with God s peace. Please be seated. Meal OFFERING Please stand as you are able. OFFERING HYMN #692 We Are An Offering A: Let us pray, C: Almighty God, we have opened our hands to you, and our hands have been filled with good things. Receive the gifts we bring in gratitude for your care for us, and help us to bless you with dedication of our lives; through Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

P: It is our duty and our delight that we should everywhere and always offer give thanks and praise to you, O God, through Jesus Christ; who by his death on the cross and glorious resurrection broke the bonds of sin and death and gave life to all creation And so, with church on earth, all creation and the hosts of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops -- Proverbs 3:9 Stewardship--the caring for that which God has given us--is a spiritual practice and discipline. Stewardship (care for) creation, relationships, finances, and our talents is part of our calling as people of faith. One spiritual discipline is generosity and the caring of finances, acknowledging that all we have is given to us by God, and then sharing a portion of it with others. As summer looms on the horizon much travel tends to take place. To keep actively engaged in the discipline of generosity of finances you are invited to sign up for "Simply Giving" which is another way to give and support the Faith community and all the ministry we do together. The forms are in your bulletin, can be downloaded from the weekly email, or filled out in the office. You will also find them on our website in the Giving section (www.faithseattle.org/giving). If you have questions about the form, please call Missy in the office during the week and she can help you out! Please return completed forms to the office. WORSHIP AND MUSIC UPDATE We need your input and your involvement in the Faith Music Search You will have multiple opportunities to provide your input to the members of the Task Force set up to assist in our search. Feel free to reach out directly, or use any of these opportunities below: June 18 Listening Post in the Narthex after the 9:15 service Members on the Task Force: Kathy Brandstetter, Ruth Foster-Koth, Debbie Meyer Snook, Sara Beaver Legler, John Hushagen, and Merle Harris Listening Box: We also have set up a box at the Listening Post in the Narthex if you prefer to drop feedback off in writing.

LIVING LOCAL UPDATES Our congregation has been participating a new initiative in our synod called Living Local. We are excited for what we will learn! One way to think about Living Local is as a place for us to discover and live into God's call where we might join God among our neighbors. We are beginning the next steps of connecting with our neighborhood on Sunday, June 18th with a Neighborhood Listening Walk after our 9:15 service. This is the first Sunday that we are worshiping together as one community and we think it will be a great chance to connect and engage with someone you might not know as we take a look at the community around us. We will gather in small groups and take a 15-20 minute walk through our immediate neighborhood to see what catches our attention. Who is out on the street? What makes you curious? What surprises you? We will have fellowship snacks "on the go" and members of the guiding team will be around to answer questions. There will also be opportunities to take listening walks during different times of the month if you cannot make it on Sundays. We will have question sheets available in the narthex throughout the summer that you can fill out as you walk around and return to us. Please be in touch with any questions! We are looking forward to connecting in this process with all members and friends of the congregation. All are welcome to join us and share their perspectives! Your Guiding Team, Nancy Estill, Rick Friedhoff, LeAnne Wiles, Callie Moothart
