CALAMUS LUTHERAN PARISH Our Savior's Lutheran Church 8:00 a.m. Faith Lutheran Church 10:30 a.m. Time after Pentecost November 11, 2018 Welcome in Jesus name. Please consider using the prelude as a time for meditation and silent prayer. This is the ideal time for quiet preparation, as we come to worship God. Holy Communion is celebrated today. All who are baptized into Christ Jesus are invited forward to receive Holy Communion. Those not communing may come forward to receive a blessing. Prelude Ringing of the Bell Welcome and Announcements HOLY COMMUNION Evangelical Lutheran Worship, Setting 3, page 138 GATHERING *Please stand as you are able. *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. C: Amen. P: One with the communion of saints in all times and places, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: O God, our merciful redeemer, C: we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need;! 1

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. C: Amen. *GATHERING SONG: "Spirt of God, Descend upon My Heart" Hymn 800 *GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. * KYRIE: P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. pages 138-139 C: "Lord, have mercy." * HYMN OF PRAISE: "This is the feast..." page 140 *PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. O God, you show forth your almighty power chiefly by reaching out to us in mercy. Grant us the fullness of your grace, strengthen our trust in your promises, and bring all the world to share in the treasures that come through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. You may be seated. WORD First Reading: 1 Kings 17:8-16 L: A reading from 1 Kings. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 9 Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you. 10 So he set out and went to! 2

Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink. 11 As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. 12 But she said, As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13 Elijah said to her, Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth. 15 She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 146 1 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! 2 I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. 4 When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. 5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, 6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;! 3

7 who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; 8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. 9 The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 10 The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD! Second reading: Hebrews 9:24-28 L: A reading from Hebrews. For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26 for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. *Please stand. * GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: "Alleluia..." page 142 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the twelfth chapter.! 4

C: Glory to you, O Lord. * Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 As he taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40 They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. 41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. You may be seated. CHILDREN'S SERMON Pastor Bill SERMON Pastor Bill You may remain seated for the hymn. HYMN OF THE DAY: "The Church s One Foundation" Hymn 654 *Please stand. *CONFESSION OF FAITH P:Using the words of the Apostles Creed, let us confess our holy faith: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.! 5

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (Each petition ends: P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayers.) *PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. Greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace and be seated. MEAL OFFERING PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS *Please stand. *OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Creator God, C: you made everything, and you provide for every need. The bread we break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat and drink with thanksgiving, fill us with your love; let that love! 6

flow through us to others; and join us to the saints before us in a holy and boundless communion; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *GREAT THANKSGIVING page 144 P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: C: "Holy, holy, holy Lord " page 144 *WORDS OF INSTITUTION *LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. *INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Hunger no more. Thirst no more. Come to the banquet of life. You may be seated.! 7
