Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. December 9, 2018 4 Pastor s Desk When the fullness of time had come As the Scriptures remind us, only then - when all is ready! - does the Son of God, our Savior, come into the world. On the level of our daily life, let s not rush Christmas! Everybody has their traditions and every family does Christmas its own way! So, I m not saying you re wrong if you ve already picked out your tree and it s about to be lit and decorated. Just be aware that is not yet Christmas! The Church has to get through Advent first - a time of longing for the Lord. The commercial world rushes on far ahead. Christmas for them begins the day after Halloween! I ll never forget on one year, I had to get some things at the last minute from a chain drugstore late on Christmas Eve. They were already dismantling Christmas! The decorations and ornaments were disappearing! Valentine s candy was already visible and about to fill the shelves! All this on Christmas Eve. So we really can t decorate the Church yet - we ve got to get through our 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Sundays of Advent before we can even think about the joy of Christmas. In our private lives with God, we can learn from all of this also - everything in its time - give God the time he needs to do His wonderful works. He s in charge. He s bringing order out of chaos and triumph out of tragedy. Yes, please plan on having a Merry Christmas this and every year, but plan for an Advent that keeps Christmas in view! Let s celebrate when the time has come! Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life Thanks for Giving First Fruits & Taking a Step!!! (Regular Sunday Offertory) November 25th s weekly offering: $7,805.00 Last year s weekly offering: $8,503.00 Bulletin Reflection Good stewards believe that God, who has begun this good work in them, will carry it through to completion. In words and deeds, they can sing with the Psalmist, The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy! Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who strive to respond to God s grace by serving our parish and wider community through offering their time and talent to our Parish Social Ministries and Senior Services. December 9-Second Sunday of Advent: In today s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to Prepare the way of the Lord, and this is what Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas. SUNDAY READINGS for next week, December 16th: Zephaniah 3:14 18a Do not fear, Zion, do not be discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior. Philippians 4:4 7 The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything make your requests known to God. Luke 3:10 18 [John said,] I am bap zing you with water...he will bap ze you with the holy Spirit and fire. Send us your email if you would like to start receiving Bringing Home the Word, a weekly message based on the Sunday Scripture readings.

December 9, 2018 7 Family Activity: The Giving Manger This Advent at St. Francis, embrace a beautiful Christmas tradition that reminds us that Jesus is at the heart of the season: The Giving Manger! Here's how it works: Encourage your child to do one good deed in honor of baby Jesus each day! Write down those small acts of kindness and bring them to "Little People Liturgy" at the 10 am Sunday Mass. (Little ones process to the basement). For each deed your child completes, she/he will be given a piece of straw to place in Jesus' cradle in the manger. As the cradle is filled with hay, it will warm baby Jesus... and your hearts! What a wonderful way to ready our hearts for Jesus this season! God of power and mercy, you blessed the Americas at Tepeya with the presence of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. May her prayers help all men and women to accept each other as brothers and sisters. Through your justice present in our hearts may Your peace reign in the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. December 12, 2018
