Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion One Shabbat in Cholon, Israel, a guest who had never before been in Shul approached the Gabai and requested an aliyah. He did so in order to be able to say the HaGomel bracha. The Gabai gladly gave the man an aliyah and, following the aliyah, the Gabai made a M shebairach prayer for the guest. At this point the guest made a pledge of 100 shkalim to the Shul. Everyone was shocked to see the guest actually pull a 100 shekel bill out of his pocket right there in the spot, on Shabbat and tried to hand it to the Gabai. The Gabai was stunned. Listen, the guest said, if you do not take the money, then, at least, tell me where the Tzdaka box is and I will put the bill into the box myself. The longer I am here, the longer I am handling the money, which you say I am not allowed to do. The man clearly was not belligerent; rather he did not know or understand the laws of Shabbat pertaining to money. He pleaded with the Gabai to take the funds and not embarrass him in front of the entire Shul. The Gabai did not know what to do or say. Finally, the man found a solution. He laced the cash on the bimah where the Torah is read under the velvet cover. I did my best to pay my pledge, you can collect it after Shabbat and the guest left the Shul. The Gabai asked what should he have done and what should he do now with the money? New Members, Potential Members, Friends & Neighbours Willing to Give a Little Time to Assist with Kiddush?
