Page 3 Clergy Corner We are happy this weekend to welcome Fr. Josh Johnson of Holy Rosary Parish in St. Amant to begin our parish mission. Fr. Josh will use the homily at each Sunday Mass to offer the first part of the three part mission. Parts two and three will then be given at 7:00 pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings, December 10 and 11. While Father Josh is celebrating our weekend Masses here at St. John, I will gladly take his Liturgies at Holy Rosary in order to make possible this three part design. As is the case with our spiritual lives, Fr. Josh will begin by examining the many different ways in which we are called to encounter the Lord Jesus within our daily lives. The Scriptures for the Advent Season urge us to prepare ourselves to receive the Lord Jesus ever more deeply at Christmas time. Deepening our awareness of His presence within us is a very timely topic with which to begin this year s mission. Once we recognize, or at least glimpse, the depth of God s love for us, then it is only fitting that we should return, or dedicate, our lives to Him. A key part of making this return gift is to select the virtues by which we enable this response to occur. And so this theme of selecting spiritual virtues will serve as the topic for our part two, Monday evening session at 7pm. During our recent Stewardship of Prayer in November, we also emphasized how important is the gift of prayer when we seek to give our lives to the Lord. As you can easily imagine, prayer is likewise vital when it comes to developing and deepening the very virtues which should enliven our lives. As you can also imagine, the reality of prayer will form a basic topic for our final session on Tuesday. We hope you can join us for all three mission parts. I think this will make a wonderful Christmas gift to yourself. Page 4 Bishop Duca has asked that, this weekend of December 8-9th, we have a special collection to assist in the ongoing rebuilding of St. Joseph Abbey and College Seminary. In March of 2016 the abbey and seminary campus suffered massive flash flood damage to 30 of its buildings. The repair and rebuilding cost is estimated to be in millions of dollars. For 139 years St. Joseph Seminary has trained countless seminarians for our region. At present the school hosts over 155 students from 22 dioceses in seven states. It is extremely important to our Baton Rouge diocese that St. Ben remain available to our priesthood candidates. After all, Fr. Martin is still hoping to have an associate pastor one day.

Page 6 St. Mark, Gonzales December 11 Most Sacred Heart, Gramercy...December 12 St. Theresa, Gonzales...December 18 St. John the Evangelist December 19 In order to encourage larger attendance for our Advent Penance gatherings, individual Confessions will begin immediately at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no preliminary communal prayer service. We do hope to have a large number of area parishioners join us for each of the four remaining sessions, but we will have several priests available at each location and the lines should move quickly. Please take advantage of our normal Confession times or join us for any of the four remaining weeknight sessions.
Page 7 Established by Bishop Stanley Joseph Ott more than thirty years ago, and expanded by Bishop Alfred Hughes and Bishop Robert Muench, the Bishop s Annual Appeal continues extensive outreach and significant ministry under the spiritual leadership of our newlyappointed spiritual shepherd, Bishop Michael G. Duca. Through decades of blessings, the generous contributions of Catholic parishioners like you remain the heart of each effort. Thank you for giving to support the work of the BAA, as we Follow the Shepherd s Lead. Perhaps you ve already mailed your contribution this year. If so, please accept our thanks for your compassionate gift. If you have yet to contribute to this year s appeal, please do so as part of a special commitment service here at St. John the Evangelist Parish this weekend. Offertory envelopes are available for your convenience at the back of church on the ushers counter. At Mass, we will celebrate another opportunity to follow the example of Christ Jesus, who came to seek and to save the lost. What man among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the one until he finds it (Lk 15:4)? With so many in our community who are lost and hurting, each of them in need of God s love, your contributions are certain to honor the Lord Jesus and direct others to Him. Join your fellow parishioners and rejoice in the work of essential ministries like those you support through your giving. For additional information concerning the impact of your generosity, please visit www.baabr.org and read about the great work you sustain.
