The Journey. Chiming of the Hour/Lighting of the Candles Prelude: Carol Prelude Hal Hopson Welcome and Announcements. On This Shining Night

Transcription:

The Worship of God Words of Welcome Prelude There s a Song in the Air Arr. James H. Laster Heather Vicevic, soprano Glenn Basham, violin Call to Worship *Processional Hymn #154 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Veni Emmanuel Lighting of the Advent Wreath One: Today is the first Sunday in Advent. It is the beginning of our celebration of the birth of Jesus, who brought light into the lives of all people. Jesus said, I am the light of the world; those who follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. All: (sung) (How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him still the dear Christ enters in.) One: The Gospel of Matthew tells us that when Jesus was born, a star shone over the place where Mary and Joseph and the baby were. It was so bright it gave light and direction to the sages who had come from the East to worship him. And just as the night didn t seem to be so dark anymore, so Jesus birth itself brought light of new meaning into the world. That new beginning is the hope that we celebrate this Advent season. Time For Community Please sign and pass the register book to your neighbor. Ministry of music O Dayspring Karen Marrolli Sanctuary Choir Glenn Basham, violin Pastoral Prayer and Response Scripture Reading Jeremiah 33:14-16 OT pg. 821 (NRSV) Sermon Great Expectations of Hope Rev. Dr. Dawson B. Taylor Offertory and Prayer of Dedication Immanuel Benjamin David Knoedler Sanctuary Choir Clayton Morell, soloist Glenn Basham, violin Lord s Supper At this table all are welcome guests. Jesus is our host. We hold the bread and cup until all are served and then we commune together. Our cups contain grape juice. There are gluten-free wafers in the center of each bread plate. Invitation Prayer of Blessing and Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *Please rise in body or spirit.

Breaking and Sharing of the Bread and cup Serenity (Magnum Mysterieum) Chamber Choir Glenn Basham, violin O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in a manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord,Jesus Christ. Alleluia! Prayer of Thanksgiving *Recessional Hymn #176 Lift Up Your Heads, O Mighty Gates Truro *Words of Blessing *Postlude Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 661 J. S. Bach Savior of the Nations Come If you have a concern and would like a word of prayer or quiet conversation, stop by the parlor after the service for a visit with today s Stephen Minister. The parlor is to the right as you are leaving the sanctuary. Today we welcome our guest instrumentalist, Glenn Basham, Concertmaster of the Naples Philharmonic His presence is generously underwritten by the Music Gift Fund. And we welcome Alexandra Carlson as our guest accompanist. The Sacrament of Holy Communion, the Eucharist, the Lord s Supper In the United Church of Christ, several terms are used to refer to our sharing of the bread and the cup. Historically, views concerning Communion in our tradition have run the gamut from those who believe that Christ is symbolically present in the blessed bread and cup, to those who believe that we are sharing in a simple memorial meal as Jesus asked us to do in remembrance of me. It is not unusual for some members of UCC congregations to hold views on Communion which stress the real presence of Christ in the bread and the cup (a traditional Roman Catholic view) or to believe that sharing the bread and the cup is a simple way to express our oneness as a faith community. Our theological differences enliven rather than divide. Participants in this Morning s Worship Services: Rev. Dr. Dawson B. Taylor, Senior Minister Rev. Great Expectations! How do you re-tell a 2,000-year-old story? Sometimes the Christmas story can be magical and sometimes it can be mundane. Just like our expectations of Christmas. Each year we hope that this Christmas will be different. That our families will act differently or that the story will somehow jump off the pages of the Bible differently. No matter your expectations great or not we hope you ll make plans to join us at Naples UCC for the Advent and Christmas season as we make room in our hearts for the Christ child and the difference that Jesus can make. Holiday Gift-Giving Opportunity: Luci Lights Naples United Church of Christ is offering you an opportunity during this Advent season to purchase Luci Lights that will be sent to our global mission partners who will then distribute them to those in need. What are Luci Lights? In 2012, a company named MPOWERD, created Luci Lights, the first inflatable solar lights. Their goal was making an affordable clean-energy product. Luci taps into a source of light that is limitless and readily available to everyone on our planet the sun. Advancements in renewable technology have given us the means to literally put the power of the sun into a device that fits in the palm of your hand. MPOWERED wants to empower people around the world who still live without reliable access to electricity. We have already sent over two hundred Luci Lights to mission partners in Guatemala and in Haiti. It is the perfect gift-giving option for those on your list who would be excited to hear that you have donated Luci Lights in their honor this Christmas. Luci Lights cost $10 each.
