Their use was brought to us by those who saw in them a deeper, richer meaning for the church. Just as evergreens are always green, so our hope for eternity is always secure because it is based on Christ. Early Christians used holly as gifts, but fashioned it into wreaths to symbolize the crown of thorns, the red berries symbolic of drops of Christ s blood. Hearing devices are available, as well as large print hymnals. Please see an usher. Those who are able are invited to stand for the acts of worship marked with an * PRELUDE Pastoral Air MURSCHHAUSER/SMITH WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP Greet one another with the peace of Christ How shall we prepare this house for the coming of the King? With branches of cedar, the tree of royalty. How shall we prepare this house for the coming of the eternal Christ? With garlands of pine and fir, whose leaves are ever living, ever green. How shall we prepare this house for the coming of our Savior? With wreaths of holly and ivy, telling of his passion, death, and resurrection. How shall we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Son of God? By hearing again the words of the prophets, who foretold the saving of God. For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. Glory to God in the highest! Carol THE ADVENT WREATH The Holly and the Ivy (verse 1 and refrain) The Holly and the Ivy, when they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown. O the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir. Becky and Leslie Jane Fahrney Advent is a penitential season, just as Lent. We are called to fast, to pray, and to perform good works to prepare ourselves for the great celebration of Christmas. The liturgical color of blue or purple, symbolizes humility and penitence. This is why the candles of our Advent wreath are purple. The candles remind us that Advent is a time to wait, to watch, to prepare and to praise. Finally, on Christmas Eve we light the center candle to proclaim the arrival of Jesus- the Light of the World. LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE WAIT Advent is a time to wait. During Advent we wait for light in darkness. During Advent we wait for freedom from captivity.

During Advent we wait for comfort in sorrow. During Advent we wait for power in weakness. Lighting of the First Advent Candle This morning we light the first candle. The first candle reminds us that, as we wait upon the Lord, God s light never ceases to shine, God s will never ceases to unfold, and God s grace never ceases to be felt. As we begin the journey of Advent, may we learn to wait upon the Lord with hopeful expectation by celebrating all God has done and anticipating all he will do. THE POINSETTIA Dale and Jann Thompson The poinsettia has become the most popular flower of the Christmas season. Dr. Joel Poinsett discovered the poinsettia in Mexico while serving there as Ambassador and brought it back to our country where its popularity spread. In Mexico, the plant is called the flower of the Holy Night. The flowers are small yellow clusters in the center of red leaves. Their star-shaped formation reminds us of the star which came to shine over the birthplace of Jesus and the red leaves remind us of the blood of Jesus shed for us. CHERWIEN *DOXOLOGY UMH No. 95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessing Flow PRAYER OF DEDICATION God of righteousness, you have saved us from the worst the world can do and have promised to redeem the whole creation when Christ comes again. In faith and hope we offer our gifts of money and self, that we may be part of what you are doing in the world even now, as we wait for Christ s coming in glory. Amen. CAROL The Christmas tree probably originated from early medieval paradise plays that were performed in churches and town squares in Europe during the Advent season. The plays told the story of the human race from the creation of Adam and Eve in the garden paradise till the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. On stage was a green tree decorated with apples, symbolizing paradise. It soon became customary to place such trees in the home during the Christmas season to celebrate the paradise regained through the coming of Christ. As we light this tree, let us remember the glory and beauty of the star above Bethlehem on the night of Jesus birth. O Christmas Tree (Sing verse below) O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! Your boughs can teach a lesson That constant faith and hope sublime, Lend strength and comfort through all time. O Christmas tree! O Christmas tree! Your boughs can teach a lesson.

THE CHRISMONS Sheila Frace The Chrismon tree has its origin in the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, Virginia. The word Chrismon is derived by combining the words Christ and monogram. A Chrismon is a monogram for Christ, a symbol representing the One whose birth we celebrate. Decorating a tree in this manner emphasizes the true nature of this most holy season. Each ornament tells part of the story of God s plan for salvation. Each Chrismon is white and gold. White symbolizes the Lord s purity and perfection, and gold symbolizes the glory and majesty of the Son of God. Our Chrismon tree features over 20 ornament designs. Today we only have time to tell the story behind four of the designs the Dove, the Fish, the Crown, and the Cross & Chi. BLESSING OF THE CHRISMON TREE (Unison) All: Holy Lord, we come with joy to celebrate the birth of your Son, who rescued us from the darkness of sin by making the cross a tree of life and light. May this tree, arrayed in splendor, remind us of the life-giving cross of Christ that we may always rejoice in the new life that shines in our hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
