Our Lady Of Guadalupe When Mary appeared to Juan Diego as Our Lady of Guadalupe, she had encouraging words for him. Am I not here, I who am your mother? In the image on Juan Diego s lma (tunic), Mary iden fies herself with the Aztec people. She has their hair and features, their symbolic maternity dress. She incorporated their important symbols of the sun, moon, and stars. Today s Mass includes two Gospel op ons. Both are familiar passages from the Gospel of Luke the Annuncia on and the Visita on. Both are equally relevant to today s Feast because Mary s Yes to Christ isn t only to care for Him, but to come to us. Our Lady of Guadalupe is pregnant. The image bears witness to Mary s Yes to conceive the Savior of the World. But even in her pregnancy, she goes to care for Elizabeth. Now Mother to all the world, Mary comes to the aid of her children, reminding them of her presence among them. Liturgical Publica ons Inc.

A Note From Your Pastor... I would like to thank all of you for par cipa ng in our Second Collec on, the Homes For Christmas Drive. Last week, the Second Collec on was $1,360. Addi onally, last week, an anonymous donor came into our office with $6,000 to purchase a home for a family in Hai! I m so inspired. My hope is that we can raise an addi onal $4,640 so that we can build homes for at least two families in Hai. To give everyone an opportunity to give, we will con nue to have a Second Collec on for the Homes For Christmas Program during Advent. If you have not already given, or if you would like to give more, please consider giving at the Second Collec on. It s been a while since I ve given an update on the Archdiocese of Chicago s Renew My Church Ini a ve. The truth is that, generally speaking, Sunday worship is down across most Chris an denomina ons in the United States; and this is true for the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese of Chicago. When Mass a endance declines, so do dona ons and voca ons to the priesthood and religious life. Therefore, due to financial reasons and a shortage of priests, the Archdiocese of Chicago must do some restructuring to more efficiently carry out the mission of the Church. You may remember about two years ago, we had a mee ng to discuss which parishes we would be grouped together with. A er input from all of the parishes, we suggested, and it was approved, that we would be grouped with St. Patrick s in Wadsworth, and St. Paul the Apostle in Gurnee. This simply means that in the future, at a designated me yet to be determined, our three parishes will meet to discuss how we can work together, and therefore, work more efficiently in a world of decreasing resources, par cularly less priests in full- me ministry. In some areas, this may require the use of new models such as mul -site parishes or mul -parish pastoring. In all areas, groupings will be called to greater collabora on and interdependence. Grouping parishes allows local-level ownership and planning to take place, and ensures that local feedback is surfaced and taken into account. Ideally, forming groupings also helps us think in a more future-oriented, collabora ve, and visionary way about what it means to be Church in a local area. But the Renew My Church (RMC) Ini a ve here in the Archdiocese of Chicago, is about more than simply working more efficiently. Jesus Christ calls us to constantly renew His Church. RMC is the Archdiocese of Chicago s response to: (1) Make disciples, (2) Build communi es, and (3) Inspire witnesses. RMC intends to foster belonging, par cularly among young people, and invite them to have a true encounter and rela onship with Jesus Christ. RMC also supports vibrant parishes and schools that cul vate bonds with each other, and provoke ac ve par cipa on in the Church. RMC addi onally asks us to come together in solidarity, and spread the light and hope of Jesus Christ in order to transform the world. Our Parish is part of a pilot program in which five OLH parishioners and I will meet about six more mes before June of 2019 to collaborate with other parishes in the program, and iden fy ways to renew our parishes with the aforemen oned goals. Please pray for us. We are truly commi ed to sacrificing our desires for the good of the Church, and to bringing others to faith in the Lord Jesus. Let us con nue in the spirit of Advent to prepare for the coming of the Lord Jesus. God Bless, Fr. Paul December 09, 2018 Second Sunday Of Advent 3

Refreshments and fellowship will follow immediately a#er the Mass in the Parish Center. All are Welcome! If you would like to help with this celebra#on, please contact Minnie at: (847) 872-8928. This Wednesday, December 12, 2018 Holy Rosary begins at 6PM Spanish Mass begins at 7PM ***************************************************************** The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole con#nent. During the same visit, Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Her loving protec#on, and placed under Her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born. Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my protec!on? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything. 2nd Sunday Of Advent Luke 3:1-6 Blessed Advent to you all! Today we con nue the Joyful Expecta on of the birth of Christ in history, the present, and the future. Today we hear the words of John the Bap st calling people of his me to repentance. Now, this bap sm that John was calling people to, is not the same bap sm that we Chris ans celebrate. However, John s bap sm is at the root of our Chris an bap sm. John s bap sm had its roots in the obla on washing of the Jewish people before undertaking anything of great importance. Chris an bap sm is a sacrament to wash away original sin so as to enter sinless into the Chris an community. It is the one sacrament that is celebrated by all Chris ans, even those Chris ans who are not in communion with Rome. John enjoins us to prepare the way of the Lord. His call is to be taken in the widest sense. This prepara on is a personal prepara on, and is also a communal prepara on. We are called to make sure we are ready to meet the Lord, and this means that we need to make a difference in the world to make it be er, to make it more peaceful, and to make it more just. We are called to protect each other s dignity, and share our abundance with others, so that each may live a life that is centered on helping others. Prepare the way! Advent Prayer Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God s own work for jus ce. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father s joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing, and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gra tude for the life begun there, and spirited resolu on to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose Advent I hail. Amen. December 09, 2018 Second Sunday Of Advent 9
