Sermon Outline Part 3 Learning From the Past Numbers 13:30 (MSG), Caleb interrupted, called for silence before Moses and said, Let s go up and take the land now. We can do it. 1 Corinthians 10:1,5-6 (MSG), Remember our history, friends, and be warned. But just experiencing God s wonder and grace didn t seem to mean much most of them were defeated by temptation during the hard times in the desert, and God was not pleased. The same thing could happen to us. We must be on guard so that we never get caught up in wanting our own way as they did. Faith allows us to focus on our opportunities instead of the obstacles Faith allows us to see what others can t see Andy Stanley writes, You will hear or see something that gets your attention. A thought related to the future will generate an emotion. Something will bother you about the way things are or the way things are headed. Unlike many passing concerns, these will stick with you. You will find yourself thinking about them in your free time. You may lose sleep over them. You won t be able to let them go because they won t let you go. Faith gives us the courage to do what others say can t be done Corrie Ten Boom put it, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." Challenge Step out in faith; trust God to provide and be willing to risk it all for the sake of God s Kingdom Someone once said, Faith isn t faith until you are ready to risk something for God.

Sermon Outline/Notes Someone else said, If you re looking and praying for the easy life, then you're going to miss out on the incredible opportunities that God has for you. You see, to risk nothing is the greatest risk of all! Reflection

Holiday Baskets We are approaching the Holiday Season and once again Koinonia is requesting Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets and Christmas Wishes for our clients. Preparing a special holiday meal and joining one s family around the table to give thanks are visions that come to mind when we think of Thanksgiving and Christmas. For many families and individuals in our area however, enjoying a special holiday meal when finances are tight is just not possible. Our family at the Journey - either with their life group or on their own (it makes a great family activity!) - can help a family in need by donating a Holiday Basket. Thanksgiving Food Baskets: Sunday, Nov 23 drop off at the Journey, or Monday, Nov 24 Basket drop-off, 6-8 am Franconia United Methodist Church 6037 Franconia Rd, Alexandria, VA 22310 Christmas Food Baskets: Sunday, Dec 7 at the Journey or Wednesday, Dec 10 Basket drop-off, 9 am-1:30 pm St. John s Lutheran Church 5952 Franconia Rd, Alexandria, VA 22310 There is an online Donor Enrollment Form at koinoniacares.org. You may register to donate a basket for Christmas by completing this form. If you are unable to complete the donor form, please be sure to mark each basket, bag and/or box with your name so it can be identified. We are accepting single size baskets, to feed a family of four (4). Please consider donating multiple baskets if you are able to. In conjunction with the Christmas baskets, Koinonia is offering a Christmas shop for their clients with children. To do that, they need contributions of toys and various items. They are accepting donations through December 11th. If you would like to buy toys, you can bring them to the church by TODAY and they will be delivered to Koinonia. If you re busy, keep in mind that gift cards are also welcome! A list of suggested items for both the baskets and the Christmas shop is on the back. If you would like to participate, either as a life group or on your own, please contact David Sleight at sleight.journey@verizon.net.

Upcoming Events ELDER NOMINATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 23rd It s time once again for us to select Elders for the coming year. All active members over the age of 16 are encouraged to complete a recommendation form. Recommendations should be based on a prayerful consideration of those you know that are helping you in your Christian walk, that have been teaching and leading you in their walk by example or words. Please be in prayer for God s guidance in this selection process. More information on this process, plus recommendation forms, is available on the table in the lobby, and should be turned in to any elder or placed in the offering plate by November 23rd. ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER NOVEMBER 23RD! Everyone is invited to our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. We will have a pot luck dinner complete with Turkey and all the trimmings November 23rd at Key Middle School at 5pm. Turkey and the trimmings will be provided, but please bring your favorite side dish and dessert (large enough to feed 8 10) to share, and invite your family and friends to join us for a blessed time of food and fellowship. Sign up in the lobby to let us know what you can bring - we especially need to know if you might be able to cook a turkey or bring a ham! UPCOMING GIRLFRIENDS AND GOD EVENTS Hey Ladies - be sure to pick up a postcard in the lobby that lists our upcoming events through January, so that you can mark them on your calendar and SAVE THE DATES! ARE YOU MISSING SOMETHING? We have a small "lost and found" location behind the guest welcome booth in the front foyer. We'll keep stuff for 30 days and then send it along to our local charity clothing bank or the Salvation Army. Not finding it here? Check down at the information booth for Journey Kidz - they have a box, too! Check with Jim Pruitt at jptex1950@aol.com.

Along with our usual activities and hang out time, we will be continuing our new study on Biblical Doctrines. If you have questions, contact: Adam Schuster schuster.journey@verizon.net. Reaching Up...Reaching Out! That's the theme for our building renovation/expansion, and for the capital gifts campaign to support it. We began the campaign one year ago this month. You can see the construction beginning to really take shape - despite the delays from the Fairfax County bureaucracy. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, it seems like a good time to ask the Journey family to help us put even more of a dent in the sizable construction loan we now have on our books. And we would like to take some time to describe the building plans in more detail, including a ballpark timetable. So, an anniversary capital gifts campaign today, with "Commitment Sunday" on November 23rd. That's the date we will ask you to prayerfully commit to the campaign if you are new, or perhaps catch up with a previous pledge. You'll hear more detail as we go along, including at two "town hall" meetings designed to answer your questions. Please sign up for one of those meetings. A meal will be provided, and childcare as well. Town Hall 1 is Wednesday night, November 12th at 6:30 PM. Town Hall 2 will follow the 11:15 service on Sunday, November 16th. If you have questions or comments before then, please contact the campaign director, Jim Pruitt, at jptex1950@aol.com NOVEMBER JOURNEY DEVOTIONALS FOR WOMEN NOW AVAILABLE Need a daily devotional? Currently, we provide meals to those that have had a new baby, had surgery or had any other circumstance arise that put them in need of meal support. The meals are coordinated through the Meal Train website, making it simple for the Journey Meals supporters and recipients to get all the important details. If you or someone you know within the church is in need of support, or if you would like to help provide meals, please contact Ramy Ruiz at rlichaa@earthlink.net or Lisa Steedsman - lsteedsman@gmail.com via email. NEED PRAYER? If you have an urgent prayer need, one that needs prayer before Sunday, there are several ways to get the word out to our prayer warriors: Go to our website, thejourneysite.org, and click on "Prayer Request" on the Welcome (front) page. From there you can fill out a form that will be sent to the Journey office. Email your request directly to Vicki Becker at vbecker2@verizon.net - she will send your request out to our email prayer team. Call the office! We can forward your request on to Vicki if you are not able to. If you would like to have your name added to the Email prayer team, please contact Vicki Becker at vbecker2@verizon.net. Vicki will email you when she is contacted with urgent prayer needs. Your prayers are appreciated!
