Advent The word Advent is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning coming, which is a translation of the Greek word parousia. It is traditionally a time of waiting for Christ to come. Christ comes to us as a baby in a manger and Christ will come again in glory and revelation. In a world where it is easy to doubt, the church is called to remember God s faithfulness. Faithful: It s Who God Is. This second week of Advent, we reflect on the Spirit who God sends into the world to keep the promise. Hannah and Mary are two women blessed by the Spirit through their faith. Hannah, who prays so fervently that Eli thinks she is drunk, is blessed with the child she desires. And Mary, a young Jewish girl, is given the honor of bearing the Christ child. The Spirit gifts us with its presence during this season. God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit during this season. Prelude Settings of Of the Father s Love Begotten (Divinum mysterium) Held and Candlyn Advent Liturgy Moment of silence We light the first candle of Advent. We trust that you are faithful to your promise. We light the second candle of Advent. We watch for the Spirit to come. We light the candle of faith. Look upon your world and heal your land and your people. Prepare us to be changed by your Spirit. In this world of pain and darkness Send your Spirit to fulfill your promise. 2

Hymn Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah tif in veldele First time - soloist; Second time - all Holy Spirit, you inspired faith in Mary and Hannah. As you visited them, visit us and fill us with your presence. Bring your good news to life within us. Give us courage to carry your light into the injustices and shadows of this world. Call to Worship We worship in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen Christ, we sit in darkness and you are our light. Our world is shaken by fire, earthquake, and storm. Our security is shattered by violence, fear, and hate. We wait in anticipation, expecting your light to penetrate our darkness and radiate within us. In the midst of our doubts and our insecurities we are reminded that you, Triune God, are steadfast. Your faithfulness reaches to the ends of the earth. We watch and wait, expecting new light to shine as the season of joy approaches. You remember your promise. You send your Spirit. You give us the gift of salvation. We rejoice at your presence in our lives. Walk with us so that we trust in you and shall not be shaken. We wait in hope, attentive to all the signs of Christ s coming. Hymn Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus jefferson 4

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Faithful God, Bind us together through your promise, that your Spirit within might be the song we sing and the melody of our lives. Draw us together so that our praise and worship might echo in these walls and reverberate through our lives. Amen Lesson 1 Samuel 1:9-20 After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head. As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine. But Hannah answered, No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time. Then Eli answered, Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him. And she said, Let your servant find favor in your sight. Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, I have asked him of the Lord. *** We welcome children to Dock Children s Education at this time.*** Ensure your child is wearing a nametag with name and grade level. See front of yellow bulletin insert for pickup locations. Anthem O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion from Messiah G. F. Handel Taylor VanDenburg, soloist 5

Psalm 47:1-4 Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy. For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth. He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Hymn Awake! Awake, and Greet the New Morn rejoice, rejoice 6

Sacrament of Holy Baptism 10:30 Henry Richard Bouthilet child of Courtney and Matthew Bouthilet Benjamin Benjamin Daniel Hagan child of Kathryn and William Hagan Cole Richard Hagan child of Kathryn and William Hagan Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Holy Gospel Luke 1:32-35 All (sung): Glory to you, O Lord. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. The Gospel of the Lord. All (sung): Praise to you, O Christ. 7
