CONFESSION BEFORE COMMUNION by Paul Turner Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, we say. Then we go to communion anyway. However, some Catholics stay in the pew. Others slink out of church when the communion procession forms. Some feel genuinely unworthy to receive their Lord. In the not-too-distant past, people went to confession before every communion, and many received communion only rarely. People will abstain from the Eucharist if they judge their sins grave. Is confession required before communion? No. In fact, the only sins which should keep us from communion and which we are obliged to confess are called serious. Which one are those? We don t exactly have a list. It s a judgment call with the penitent and the confessor, so you ll hear many interpretations of serious sin from priests and people alike. In previous centuries, serious sin governed so many cases that few people received communion regularly, but that is not the case today. How do we interpret the expression? Although confession is not required before every communion, it often precedes in church practice. Children preparing for First Communion also prepare for First Penance. Although the church does not oblige us to confess lesser sins, those who use the sacrament will find their communion more fruitful. PAINTERS NEEDED!! We are in the process of painting the classrooms. Some of these rooms have not been painted in over 17 years. We supply the paint, brushes and whatever else is needed. We just need painters! There are seven classrooms that need to be painted within the next four weeks. Please contact Dave Kordell at 253-5621 or dkordell@dellscatholic.com if you can help. ATTENTION Wednesday night Symbolon classes will start at 7:30 p.m., not 7:00 p.m. as originally scheduled. FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION Please take the time to complete your family s registration form and return to the Religious Formation Office, along with all necessary fees, as soon as possible. THANK YOU Thanks go out to Paul Ciurkot and Adam Pietryga for taking on the sanding and painting of the classroom chalkboards. The first room they did turned out fantastic! Also, special thanks to Teri and Al Uzzardo, Melanie Jones, Bob Miller and Mary Schad who painted three classrooms in 3 days in oppressive heat conditions. They did a wonderful job! Many thanks for the face lift; it will brighten up the rooms for all who use them. OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED When our Faith Formation year begins, we will need office volunteers on Wednesdays (5:15 p.m. to 6:35 or 6:45 p.m. to 8:20 p.m.) when classes are in session. No experience required; just need someone to answer phone and help with small tasks. Contact Dave Kordell at (608) 253-5621. CATHOLIC INQUIRY CLASSES Have you ever been baptized? Are you an adult Catholic who has not received Holy Communion or Confirmation? Are you a spouse or parent of a Catholic who would like to share religious beliefs? Do you know anyone who might be interested in becoming a Catholic? Contact Dave Kordell at (608) 253-5621 or email: kordell@dellscatholic.com.
