Please remember them in your prayers. With the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI would be abdicating his position as Pope at the end of the month, I was surprised at how calmly my soul received the news. I immediately remembered that the role of Successor of Peter is the principle gift to the Church. It is not so much the man in himself that is the gift, though we have had many recent popes who are saints, but rather the position of Pope leading the Church, especially when teaching on matters of faith and morals, infallibly. That is God s gift. It is a wonderful thing when a saint is in the position of Pope, but we know well that not all Pope s have been saints. The position and role of Successor to Peter is protected by God but the man who fills this role remains free to sin, which any Pope does, probably daily. It is with this in mind that I was very at peace with Pope Benedict s position to step aside now, retire to a monastery to write and pray, and open the role to another chosen by God to animate the Chair of Peter. We will be fine. It makes for good Lenten prayer. As an aside, Pope s don t resign, the media used the wrong word, rather they abdicate (renounce) their throne or seat so to speak. Who would they hand their resignation in to? They freely and with clear mind set it aside for the good of the Church. Benedict is a humble and holy man. Have you thought of something for Lent? Last week I preached on four S s to help spur some thought. I mentioned sin, suffering, salvation and solitude. I invited persons to think and pray about this with God as to what God may be asking us to do. The key is probably to not bite off too much, we don t want to be full of a sense of disappointment at the end of Lent. First, for Sin, think of any habit or attitude that falls short of love. Maybe tackle this for Lent. Sin is best approached by practicing the opposite action or attitude of the one we dislike. This movement of love crowds out sin. Confession is not a bad idea to get started in this area. Secondly I mentioned Suffering. Each day holds plenty. What could you offer up? Perhaps it is in the acceptance of pain while trying to trust that God is still with you. That is very holy. Maybe it is patience with a spouse, co-worker, kids, friend, etc. United to Christ these offerings are made perfect and can help us grow in holiness. You may certainly choose to give up something like sweets, while remembering always, I don t need this God, I need you. Thirdly I mentioned Salvation. How could we be Christ s salvation to others? This would be any gift of alms (monetary donation) to any charity. It would also include making a good gift to the Bishop s Appeal if that s possible.

FEBRUARY 16 & 17, 2013 PAGE 3 This aids the work of the Church in its outreach, formation and administration. It also helps lessen the parish burden. Lastly, I mentioned Solitude. Perhaps this Lent is just a time to create space for God in quiet. This could be as easy as turning off the car stereo at times, or the TV at home or unplugging our music for awhile. Whatever you do, remember that it should lead to God and thus to peace. I don t need this God, I need you. Let us pray for each other this Lent. Fr. St. Bernard School Kay Franz, Princapal Permeating the Catholic school is a sense of the spiritual, a recognition that we depend upon God. Students are taught the value of both personal prayer and prayer as a community of believers. During Catholic Schools Week Father Mark and Father Jose' lead the students in understanding and engaging in the practice of Eucharistic Adoration. It is important for children to engage in Eucharistic adoration. Pope John Paul II said back in 1996: "I urge priests, religious and lay people to continue and redouble their efforts to teach the younger generations the meaning and value of Eucharistic adoration and devotion. How will young people be able to know the Lord if they are not introduced to the mystery of his presence? The Holy Father continues to stress this importance today. What we learn as children will remain in us and help us to stay close to Jesus. Before young children have received their first holy Communion, Eucharistic adoration is a great way to help them receive Jesus in their heart through spiritual communion. And afterward, it helps increase in them a desire for more frequent Communion. Hopefully during the teen years these same children will find in Jesus a best friend, strength and light. They also may be more disposed to hear and follow their vocation in life. Auction for Education World Tour 2013 March 16 St. Bernard School How would you like a chance to win $2,000?
