CONFIRMATION SUNDAY Confirmation Sunday will be held on May 6th at the 9:00 am service. This is a special Sunday for our confirmands. They will be reaffirming their baptism and confirm their Christian faith. Our confirmands are Carter, Maddie, Cassie, Reis and Elise. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for Confirmation Sunday. Come and support them as they are confirmed. FIRST COMMUNION SUNDAY AND MOTHER S DAY Bring mom to church Sunday, May 13th to shower her with not only your love, but also the love of Jesus! Please pray for and join Elli, Noah, Alyson, Nathan, Elizabeth, Wes, Sophie, Jackson, Jocelyn and Claire, as they receive their First Communion during the 9:00 am worship service. Pentecost Sunday is Sunday, May 20th. We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit when a mighty wind and tongues of fire danced upon the heads of the disciples. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to speak in other languages. Come to Messiah Pentecost Sunday dressed in red, the color of the Holy Spirit, as we hear about mighty winds blowing and tongues of fire dancing. We will be filled full of the Holy Spirit as we share who Jesus is as our Savior in our own language! MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH 801 South Green Street Brownsburg, IN 46112 317-852-2988 www.messiahelca.com GRADUATE RECOGNITION SUNDAY WILL BE MAY 20TH AT 9:00 AM www.messiahelca.com 1

A Message from Pastor Martin Bornhoeft When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like a rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4 NRSV Often, I have shared an appreciation for what comes from interim ministry. It is the opportunity to participate and experience the many traditions of the congregation and their work to share Jesus' love, grace and salvation with one another and with the surrounding communities. I have such an appreciation for how Messiah observed Holy Week and what Jesus gave to us on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Important images include the many people at Messiah washing and blessing each other s hands during the Maundy Thursday Service, especially since we have not shaken hands with each other during the flu season. There are the blessings of how we shared Jesus' last words as he suffered and died upon the cross, surrounded with the music of the choir as they sang "Father, forgiven them, they know not what they do" during the Good Friday Services. Then there is such an appreciation for how Messiah celebrated Jesus' resurrection on Easter morning, and the many people who came to hear the good news of Jesus' being raised from the dead. There are the blessings of the Children's Message and sharing the Easter and the April Fool's message of the empty tomb with the empty gift box - a message I haven't shared with Messiah before. There are the blessings of proclaiming from the Gospel of John 20:1-18 and how our risen Savior shared with Mary his resurrection by saying her name. There are the blessings of sharing the Lord's Supper as we received what Jesus gave to us in love and forgiveness through his body and his blood. What is certainly part of the blessings I have received is to have been able to participate and experience Holy Week and Easter, especially since the previous year I was waiting for surgery in a hospital. Holy Week and Easter at Messiah will be with me for a very long time and this is what I will share with other interim congregations I have the honor and privilege to serve. Thank you to the many people who were a part of observing Holy Week and celebrating Easter Sunday! Thank you! We continue to celebrate Jesus' resurrection and the new life and hope we have from our Savior's rising from the dead. Soon we will be putting our red on and celebrating Pentecost Sunday on Sunday, May 20th and all that happened with the disciples who were filled with the Holy Spirit and were able to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them that ability. Prior to Pentecost Sunday, we will celebrate how the Holy Spirit has filled our Confirmands and our First Communion children. Sunday, May 6th is Confirmation Sunday and our Confirmands will reaffirm their baptism, confirm their faith and become adult members of Messiah. We ask that you would pray for our Confirmands - Carter, Maddie, Cassie, Reis and Elise - as they prepare for Confirmation Sunday and how they have been filled with the Holy Spirit throughout their Confirmation study. Sunday, May 13th is First Communion Sunday and Elli, Noah, Alyson, Nathan, Elizabeth, Wes, Sophie, Jackson, Jocelyn and Claire will receive Holy Communion for the first time. We ask that you would also pray for our First Communion children as they learn and are filled with the Holy Spirit and receive the love and forgiveness that has been given to all in Jesus' Last Supper. Finally, on Pentecost Sunday, as we put our red on, and celebrate how we are filled with the Holy Spirit during our worship services, we will recognize our graduates and where the Spirit will take them. We will have the Congregational Meeting, and filled with the Holy Spirit, we will look at how we are sharing our Savior, Jesus, with those who we will elect for the church council. May we pray for our Confirmands, our First Communion children, our Graduates and our Pentecost celebration and where we will go and what we will say, as we are filled by the Holy Spirit and share in our own language as the Spirit gives to us ability! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Pastor Martin www.messiahelca.com 2

Spiritual Life Prayer Each month the Spiritual Life Board writes a prayer for individual members of the congregation to pray throughout the month that pertains to one of our ministries. This month the prayer focuses on our Property Committee Board. Dear Heavenly Father, Now that the weather has finally turned warm, there is so much to do lawns to mow, gardens to plant, home repairs long-overdue, etc. Sometimes it s a struggle to find the time for everything on our list. How true this is for Messiah, too. In the midst of vital ministry, the mundane must continue from replacing light bulbs to emptying recycling bins. Thank you, Gracious God, for blessing us with humble, hard-working Property Committee members who literally roll up their sleeves on a daily basis to get the job done. Using your inspired gifts, they allow the grounds and sanctuary to be a safe, welcoming place. May they know our deep appreciation for their quiet ways for, literally, we couldn t be the place of transforming hearts without them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen PROPERTY WORK DAY Each month people gather at Messiah to be sure the building and grounds are in good repair. There are light bulbs to replace, mulch to be spread and various other things to be done. The tasks vary from month-to-month. You are invited to come down to the church at 9:00 am and literally lend-a-hand on Saturday, May 5th. Contact Tim Ritchotte (317-892-4512) or Mike Ford (317-839-9320) if you have any questions. Mark your calendar for the first Saturday of every month at 9:00 am. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING There will be a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, May 20th immediately following the 9:00 am worship service. Memorial Day The church office will be closed on Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day. Soon the church council will have the following positions open: President, Secretary and Board Directors for the Communications Board, Stewardship Board and Property Board. Please prayerfully consider serving on our church council. If you would like to know more about these council positions, please see or contact Tom Stempson, Doug Bruns or Pastor Martin. THREE LITTLE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO TRANSFORM GUESTS INTO REGULARS Here are some proven tips to help our visitors return. 1. Sit in the middle of the pews at church. When a guest has to walk past 3 or 4 people in order to get to a seat, their discomfort level goes up. Leave the ends open for easy access for guests. 2. Make it your goal to introduce yourself to two new, or new to you, people each Sunday. A good way to start the conversation is to say, Hi, my name is, how long have you been attending worship services at Messiah? Whether they ve been members since day one, or if this is their first time, the question is a good conversation starter. Also there is nothing wrong with telling someone you cannot remember their name but do remember them. 3. Greet guests with popcorn. There is a container in the welcome center with bags of microwave popcorn in it with a note that says Thanks for Poppin In which everyone can hand out to visitors not just the greeters or staff. People seem to enjoy this little token for visiting. Also encourage them to sign the pew card with all their contact information so we can purchase 5 chicks from God s Global Barnyard in their name. Hola Amigos! Everyone had a wonderful time at this year s Progressive Dinner. Good Food and drinks were enjoyed by over 90 people who participated in our Mexican Fiesta! We want to thank all of our host families as well as Donna Effner and Judy Phillips for all their planning. We look forward to doing this again next year! Picture on the left is Phyllis & Joe Bridwell and Donna Effner is speaking. Picture on the right: Kathy Cooper. Thank you for your prayers, thoughts and cards received after the passing of my mother. They were all very appreciated and have helped my family! Thanks again to my Messiah family. Love Kaj and family Bob & Eloise Waggoner send a big thank you for all the prayers, support and visits from all Messiah members, especially Tom Stempson and Kathy Cooper. They truly feel blessed with all the cards, flowers, and kind words. Habitat for Humanity is grateful for our gift of $1,000 in March 2018. Our financial support helps them build/rehab more homes and change more lives. The ELCA Fund for Leaders is thankful for our gift of $1500. Thank you to Mike Ford for all his time put into the lights to illuminate our flags and also for getting our playground ready for summertime. After four years leading OWLS Betty Obenauf has announced after June she is retiring. She has enjoyed her time but would like to pursue other interests. Therefore, we need someone (or even two people) to take over. Messiah would like to thank Betty for the years of leading the OWLS with wonderful fellowship time and occasional guest speakers. Job description: Keep track of OWLS' "Rock Students" (care packages & cards & the collection for these); Reminding each month's hostesses of a date they signed up for our monthly lunch(& secure ones if needed); check on items needed such as ice, etc. and plan a program for some luncheons. Hours per month: if no program, only a few. If there is a program planned, number of hours varies depending on what is planned (mostly phone calls). This is a brief description of the responsibilities for leading OWLS. For further information or to sign up please contact Betty at 317-858-5228. Betty will help with the transition to a new leader. www.messiahelca.com 10

Family Promise of Hendricks County helps families with children get back on their feet and obtain their own housing. Some families come from living in their cars or being out on the street. Each evening, families are hosted for a week by local churches, like Messiah, while during the day guests go to work, school, or to the resource house in Avon. Your help is needed to continue making this a success and be Christ s hands and feet. Sign up to make a difference in someone's life: a mission trip without even leaving Messiah!
