2019 harvard alumni Travels discover learn connect Explore Old Town The History & Culture of Poland A Comprehensive Study with an emphasis on Jewish Heritage May 11 21, 2019 with Jay Harris, Harry Austryn Wolfson Professor of Jewish Studies

Museum of the History of Polish Jews This new and distinctive land program provides an immersive cultural experience in Poland, with a heavy focus on Jewish history and historical sites. Starting in the capital city of, once described as The Paris of the East, explore historic sites and immerse yourself in the rich civilization of the Polish Jews. Meet the Director of the Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland, discuss current affairs with a journalist, and interact with local community members at the Jewish Community Center (JCC). Transfer to Łód, visiting the Manufaktura Museum along the way. Continue on to Kraków and begin your stay here with a festive Shabbat dinner at the local JCC. Explore Kraków s sites and history, including Oskar Schindler s Factory, St. Mary s Basilica, and the Kazimierz district. Travel out to infamous Auschwitz II-Birkenau and Auschwitz I, and participate in a debrief at the O wi cim Holocaust Center. Visit Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, and meet with a Professor of Jewish Studies before a festive farewell dinner featuring Jewish klezmer music. I look forward to getting to know them on the drives and/or flights we ll take between cities. A little mental and physical stimulation will do me good! Harvard Study Leader Jay Harris is the Harry Austryn Wolfson Professor of Jewish Studies at Harvard University. He was educated at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. After teaching appointments at Columbia and the Jewish Theological Seminary, he joined Harvard as an assistant professor of Jewish Studies in 1989. He was named the Harris K. Weston Associate Professor of the Humanities in 1991, and the Harry Austryn Wolfson Professor of Jewish Studies in 1994. In 2000, he was named a Harvard College Professor, a five-year appointment recognizing outstanding undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Harris was director of Harvard s Center for Jewish Studies from 2001 to 2006 and dean of Undergraduate Education from 2008 2017. He has also served as the chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, was co-master of Cabot House, and directed doctoral dissertations and advanced reading and research for doctoral candidates. He is a member of the editorial boards of Jewish Quarterly Review and Jewish Book Annual, and has written books and articles on Jewish history, literature, and modern Judaism. Hotel Bristol (B,L,D) Tuesday, May 14 Begin the morning with a lecture before proceeding to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews (POLIN). The POLIN Museum is a modern cultural institution that preserves the rich civilization created over the course of almost 1,000 years. Meet a local journalist for a briefing about current issues in Poland today. Attend a concert featuring the music of legendary composer and virtuoso pianist Frédéric Chopin. Partake in vodka tasting, savoring various kinds of traditional Polish vodkas. The evening is free to explore. Hotel Bristol (B,L) Wednesday, May 15 In the morning, visit the scenic Royal Łazienki, set in a beautifully landscaped 18 th -century park. The historic grounds, featuring fabulous gardens with a monument to Frederic Chopin, showcase classicist architecture and harmoniously blend with the natural surroundings. Proceed to the Okopowa Street Cemetery, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe with over 200,000 marked graves. Continue to No yk Synagogue, a pre-war Jewish house of prayer in and a symbol of the continuity of Jewish life. Special arrangements have been made for dinner at s Jewish Community Center (JCC) to meet and dine with young community leaders, educators, and activists. Hotel Bristol (B,L,D) Thursday, May 16 / Łód After a morning lecture, depart for Łód, Poland s historically significant industrial hub. Visit the Manufaktura Museum to discover the history of the massive textile factory founded by the leading Jewish industrialist Izrael Poznanski. After lunch at the Manufaktura Complex proceed to the memorial at Radegast Station the longest-lasting, most insulated, and most oppressive ghetto in World War II. About 75,000 Jews were shipped in cattle cars to Auschwitz from the Łód Ghetto. Dinner is at the hotel. Andel s Hotel (B,L,D) Friday, May 17 Łód / Kraków Begin the day with a visit to the Łód Jewish Cemetery one of the largest in Europe. The journey continues with travel to Kraków. Check into the five-star Hotel Stary, which has been recognized by the prestigious Parisian Prix Villégiature as the most beautiful hotel interior design in Europe. Visit the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Kraków, and meet with executive director Jonathan Ornstein. In the evening, enjoy a festive Shabbat dinner at the JCC with local community members. Saturday, May 18 Kraków Following a lecture at the hotel, visit Oskar Schindler s Factory, a historical museum dedicated to Kraków under Nazi Occupation. In the afternoon enjoy a walking tour of Kraków s Old Town, following the Royal Route past the 19 th -century Baroque style Juliusz Slowacki Theatre to the enormous Main Market Square. The evening is free to enjoy the local atmosphere and dine independently. Hotel Stary (B,L) Sunday, May 19 Kraków / O wi cim / Kraków This morning depart for a guided visit of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous concentration and extermination camp complex where approximately two million people were killed between 1942 and 1945. At Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II, see the entrance tower, the railway platform, various barracks, and the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoriums. Following lunch, continue to Auschwitz I, which was the administrative center as well as the site of the deaths of approximately 70,000 ethnic Poles and Soviet prisoners of war. Today Auschwitz I serves as a museum displaying pictures, documents, and victims belongings. Conclude the day by participating in a debrief session at the O wi cim Holocaust Center. Hotel Stary (B,L,D) Monday, May 20 Kraków Tour the historic district of Kazimierz, the area of Kraków that was home to a significant Jewish community from the 14 th -century until the Holocaust. Visit the Remuh Synagogue, the synagogue of Rabbi Moses Isserles, known as the Rema, who was one of the great codifiers of Jewish law. After lunch tour one of the oldest universities in Europe, Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364 by King Casimir the Great. Meet with Edyta Gavron, Professor of Jewish Institute Studies and learn about the University today. Gather for a farewell dinner and a concert featuring traditional Jewish klezmer music. You will also see the scenic Golden Lane, a brightly painted street of 16 th -century houses, one of which was once home to Franz Kafka. After lunch, cross the 15 th -century Charles Bridge and walk through Karlova Street to explore the Old Town. The evening and dinner on your own. Hotel Paris (B,L) Thursday, May 23 Prague Visit the historically significant Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov, where one of the most important rabbis in Jewish history, Rabbi Yehuda Loew ben Bezalel, is buried. Take a boat ride on the Vltava River and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. The evening takes you to the Municipal House where Thomas Masaryk declared the independence of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Also attend a classical music concert featuring the works of great Czech composers Bed ich Smetana and Antonín Dvo ák, followed by a farewell reception and dinner. General Information What to Expect This is an active program covering varying terrain, with considerable walking and some busy travel days including early departures and motorcoach transfers of several hours, offset by some evenings at leisure.
