San Pedro Catholic Church May 19th & 20th, 2018 ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 3:9-15, 20 or Acts 1:12-14; Ps 87:1-3, 5-7; Jn 19:25-34 Tuesday: Jas 4:1-10; Ps 55:7-11a, 23; Mk 9:30-37 Wednesday: Jas 4:13-17; Ps 49:2-3, 6-11; Mk 9:38-40 Thursday: Jas 5:1-6; Ps 49:14-20; Mk 9:41-50 Friday: Jas 5:9-12; Ps 103:1-4, 8-9, 11-12; Mk 10:1-12 Saturday: Jas 5:13-20; Ps 141:1-3, 8; Mk 10:13-16 Sunday: Dt4:32-34,39-40;Ps33:4-6,9,18-20,22;Rom8:14-17;Mt28:16-20 TODAY S READINGS First Reading- Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm-Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading- There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) Gospel As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) Saints And Special Observances Sunday: Pentecost Sunday Monday: Seventh Week in Ordinary Time; Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church Tuesday: St. Rita of Cascia Friday: St. Bede the Venerable; St. Gregory VII; St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi Saturday: St. Philip Neri GUIDE US TODAY Holy Spirit, you who pointed out the way for your disciples to announce the gospel, we pray to you: As in the time of the apostles, guide today s messengers of the Good News. From Come, Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the birthday of the church.
San Pedro Catholic Church Hurricane Prayer Eternal Father, Creator of all the world and all that is in it. We beg you to spate the Florida Keys from storms and hurricanes. If any should occur, we ask that they all go out to sea where they may do the least amount of damage to anyone. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen May 19th & 20th, 2018 May 26th & 27th Fund Raiser~Bake Sale In order to raise money to help pay for roof repairs needed in San Pedro, a group of committed parishioners will be selling baked goods and miscellaneous articles after Masses. We need your support!! Here I Am! he answered. Genesis 22:11 It is easy to say, Here I am, Lord, when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say, Here I am, Lord, when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Many times, we are called upon when it s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable. Capital Improvement fundraiser Envelopes Envelopes are available in pews and at all exits of the Church. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. San Pedro Food Pantry The San Pedro Food Pantry Is Running Short on Non Perishable proteins, (tuna, spam, ham, Vienna sausages etc.), vegetables (corn, peas, green beans, mixed vegetables etc.), cereals, canned soups, spaghetti sauce, pastas, peanut butter etc...
