FAITH FORMATION FOR ADULTS, YOUTH & CHILDREN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE: 865-9370 OFFICE HOURS: MONDAY : 1 PM TO 3PM TUESDAY : 1 PM TO 5 PM WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: 9 AM TO 5 PM CLOSED ON FRIDAYS One doesn t begin to be a Christian because of an ethical decision or a great idea, but rather because of an encounter with an event, with a person, who gives new horizons to life, and with that, a decisive orientation. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI This Wednesday, students will attend the Vigil with their classmates on October 31 for the Holy Day of Obligation celebrating All Saints Day. begins at 6:30; parents are encouraged to attend with students. Students will turn in two blue sheets next week, one for November 1 st (All Saints Day, holy day of obligation) And regular Sunday blue sheet. During the month of November, we are asked to remember and pray for those who have died. This is a simple prayer you can pray: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Our Thanksgiving food drive is in full swing. A list was given to students in class and also available on the website. Thanks in advance for your generosity. Confirmation Year I students- mark your calendars for your retreat. Retreat will be held here at the on Saturday, November 10 th from 9am-2pm. Daylight Savings Time Ends! Don t forget to turn your clocks back on Saturday, November 3, 2018! REMINDER: The Parish & Religious Education Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 1, 2018, for the Holy Day of Obligation celebrating All Saints Day. LITURGY CORNER Thursday is the Solemnity of All Saints and Friday is All Souls Day. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning it is equal to a Sunday and a sin to willfully not attend Holy. It commemorates all the blessed in Heaven, intended particularly to honor those saints who have no special feasts. In the 4 th Century, groups of martyrs, and later, other saints, were honored on a common day in various places. In 609 or 610, the Pantheon, a pagan temple in Rome, was consecrated as a Christian church in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the martyrs and, later, all saints. November 1 was fixed as the date of this observance by Pope Gregory IV in 835. The annual commemoration of all the faithful departed is November 2. The dead were prayed for from the earliest days of the. By the 6 th Century, Benedictine monasteries customarily held commemorations at Pentecost. Commemorating all the faithful departed the day after All Saints Day was begun in the Abbey of Cluny by Saint Odilio in 998. All Souls Day following All Saints Day was set so that memories of all souls, both in heaven and in purgatory, could be celebrated on 2 successive days. In this way, the Christian belief in the Communion of Saints could be more clearly expressed. During the month of November we remember all those who have gone before us by listing them and praying for them. The list is then placed on the Altar for the entire year and each person is remembered at every celebrated during that year.
