PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Evangelical Lutheran Synod NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD CHURCH STAFF Pastor Hartwig: 507-382-6826 Email: pastorhartwig@gmail.com Pastor Moldstad: 507-382-0045 Email: pastormoldstad@gmail.com Church Office: 507-385-1386 Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM JESUS LAMBS AT PEACE PRESCHOOL Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Phone: 507-385-7752 Email: joslynmoldstad@gmail.com Church website: Peacemankato.com Email: karen@peacemankato.com OCTOBER 7, 2018 TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME TO PEACE! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, in Your bountiful goodness keep us safe from every evil of body and soul. Make us ready, with cheerful hearts, to do whatever pleases You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

THE DIVINE SERVICE Rite 2, p. 60 HYMN #246:1-2 GOD S OWN CHILD, I GLADLY SAY IT HOLY BAPTISM 1 P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded Baptism when he said: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All of us are born into this world with a deep need for Baptism. From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptisms he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life. Our sinful nature need not control us any longer. We recall what Baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words: C: Baptism means that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. P: As baptized children of God we confess our sins: C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 1 This order, from Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, incorporates Holy Baptism into congregational worship by combining the Sacrament of Baptism with the Confession of Sins. Martin Luther said that confessing sins and receiving forgiveness is nothing else than a reliving of Baptism. Thus this order provides opportunity not only to baptize but also to recall the lasting blessings of Baptism. 3

The Rite of Baptism continues at the font. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM P: Before the Lord and His Church, I ask you, was Greyson baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit? Witnesses of the Baptism: Yes, Greyson was baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ. The Almighty God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Peace be with you. EXHORTATION TO SPONSORS P: Dear sponsor(s), Greyson has been baptized in the name of the triune God. It is your privilege and responsibility to remember him in your prayers, to remind him of his baptism, and, as far as possible, to give your counsel and aid that he may be brought up in the true knowledge of God according to the teachings of the Scriptures as confessed by our Lutheran Church. If you intend gladly and willingly to do this, then answer: Yes, and we ask God to help us. C: Yes, and we ask God to help us. EXHORTATION TO PARENTS AND CONGREGATION P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents, to assist in whatever manner possible so that Greyson may remain a child of God until death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength. C: Yes, and we ask God to help us. P: Let us pray. Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for the blessing of Baptism by which you offer and grant the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Help us to regard our baptisms as the robe of righteousness we are to wear all the days of our lives. Look with special favor on Greyson and grant him a rich measure of your Spirit that he may grow in faith and godly living. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to those who have been baptized, so that all of us may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus our Lord. C: Amen. HYMN #246:3-5 GOD S OWN CHILD, I GLADLY SAY IT 4

THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. THE LESSON GENESIS 2:18-24 18 The LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is a suitable partner for him. 19 Out of the soil the LORD God had formed every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that became its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal, but for Adam no helper was found who was a suitable partner for him. 21 The LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, the LORD God took a rib and closed up the flesh where it had been. 22 The LORD God built a woman from the rib that he had taken from the man and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, Now this one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She will be called woman, because she was taken out of man. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will remain united with his wife, and they will become one flesh. 5

THE EPISTLE HEBREWS 2:9-11 9 But we look to Jesus (the one who was made lower than the angels for a little while, so that by God s grace he might taste death for everyone), now crowned with glory and honor, because he suffered death. 10 Certainly it was fitting for God (the one for whom and through whom everything exists), in leading many sons to glory, to bring the author of their salvation to his goal through sufferings. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified all have one Father. For that reason, he is not ashamed to call them brothers. THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. I will proclaim your name to my people; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. Alleluia. (Hebrews 2:12 cf. RSV) THE ALLELUIA THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 10 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the 2 nd verse. THE GOSPEL MARK 10:2-16 2 Some Pharisees came to test him and asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? 3 He replied, What did Moses command you? 6

4 They said, Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away. 5 But Jesus told them, He wrote this command for you because of your hard hearts. 6 But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate. 10 In the house his disciples asked him about this again. 11 He said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 If she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. 13 Some people began bringing little children to Jesus so that he would touch them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said, Let the little children come to me! Do not hinder them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Amen I tell you: Whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. 16 And he took the little children in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven 7

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. THE CHIEF HYMN: #187 OUR FATHER, BY WHOSE NAME THE SERMON: MARK 10:2-16 THE OFFERTORY VERSE JESUS IS THE TRUTH TEACHER 8

THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. HYMN #486 THE CHURCH S ONE FOUNDATION THE COLLECT P: Blessed Lord, since You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and take them to heart, that by 11

the patience and comfort of Your holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. Proclaim the Wonders God Has Done: 1918 2018 A custom within the old Norwegian Synod was to regard October 14 as Founders Day. Over the years, many church dedications and special events took place on that day. The ELS which was reorganized in 1918 has carried on this tradition. We will yet observe that tradition next Sunday as a public testimony that the ELS, which was organized 100 years ago, is the spiritual successor to the doctrine and practice of the old Norwegian Synod.
